It’s not a shortage/supply issue. It’s that the pharmaceutical companies that manufacture the drugs don’t want the negative PR that comes along with selling those drugs to the government for the purposes of execution. I only know this because South Carolina passed a law in 2023 that now allows the name of the pharmaceutical supplier to remain private and has since resumed carrying out executions. I wouldn’t be surprised if other death penalty states pass similar legislation in the near future.
Thanks for sharing that information. I wondered how in the world there could be such a long standing shortage.

So there is a shortage/supply issue. And you are stating the reason for the shortage.

OK, I can see it this way too... that there is a supply issue, but it's because no one wants to supply the drugs for this purpose.

But I think when people thought of it as a shortage/supply issue, they thought that meant there was a literal shortage of the necessary drugs, meaning there wasn't any or enough to supply the prisons with. Meaning there wasn't any in existence, or some problem in the supply chain was happening.

When really, there is no shortage of the drugs in supply, the providers just don't want to sell to prisons for executions.

And maybe the move to death by firing squad? SC passed that ruling as well. 😱 I'm not sure how many other states have passed that, but bullets are cheap and no chance of mis-dosing the condemned. I struggle very hard with the DP.

A handful of states have the firing squad as their method of execution. I realize Ohio is not one of them though. I think I remember that SC used firing squad in 2024, although I am sure that is rare. Did not realize there was a law now in SC for the pharmaceutical companies to remain private. They do need to pass that in other states also.
