1) LisaB and others, I wouldn't assume too much. These are drunk or other-using Steubenville High School kids, naive, impervious, self-centered, imature egomaniacs. "Jane Doe" has had at least one serious boyfriend in the past. When she awoke - at least hung over, possibly drugged - I bet a hot shower, embarrasment, and hunger were at the top of her list. Besides, I don't think this gets us anywhere.
2) A google of Jason Hanlin turned up his publicly available child support hearings (Appeal). From what I read, here was what stood out. i) His ex-GF had to fight him to pay $317 in school expenses for his child? Sad all around. ii) His ex was miffed that his lawyer, then girlfriend/wife, was representing him. Talk about a small town. iii) Jane Hanlin didn't submit her income statements as part of the support decision.
3) When you google something like "Steubenville Ohio 'Jason Hanlin' ", you can see numerous articles per drug busts he has made, which I commend him for.
This said, it appears that the police and prosecuting attorney have a LOT of LEEWAY how hard they prosecute alleged criminals. We have seen how this case was watered down from the beginning. Here are examples of additional crimes that can be added to criminal activity, that, as a non-lawyer, seem like they could be added to this case. And this is gleaned from a case Hanlin has pushed himself.
Marijuana trafficking indictments returned
"The investigation by local, state and federal drug officials lasted more than two years. The charges against those indicted include engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, money laundering, possession of drugs, drug trafficking, possession of criminal tools and conspiracy and complicity to drug trafficking."
{Bolded are items that could apply to this case}

From another Hanlin case I got this crime: "tampering with evidence." This is on top of the numerous other criminal acts which may have allegedly occurred (which I listed a few pages back).
4) Caselaw has an interesting case: State vs Kelley. It was an Appeal filed for Kelley, and involved Detective Jason Hanlin of the Steubenville Police Department.
Kelley argued on Appeal that Hanlin used a taped conversation at trial, from an Informant, but the Informant was never identified. This does seem odd to me - how can the Detective or court athenticate the evidence. Isn't this heresay? "She argues that her Sixth Amendment constitutional right to confrontation was violated in two respects." For a lawyer, this Appeal might be interesting.

5) As an aside, a lot of these alleged criminals appear to be short. Short football players, short wrestlers, etc. 5'7", 5'8". Only one seemed tall. Do we have a Napolean Complex with this group?
