I know it is a bit abstract, but just thinking - Pippi wouldn't be short for 2 initials as in 'P.P' would it?
(even if her name was Mary)

Good thought. Nicknames often have multiple threads, so somebody with those initials who resembled the book character might well wind up calling herself Pippi.

So I went off to look for possibilities using that as a guideline. Started with Charley project. Nothing too promising so far. There are some way out of range (AA, age 79, etc.) I only found a couple of PP's.

Paula Pope is facially similar but tiny (not even 5').

Peggy Parmenter is probably too old (41 in 1976)

Jennifer Ann Prince from New Jersey fits a lot of parameters but has DNA in the system so ought to be a ruleout. Might be worth investigating though.

Patricia Phillips is way too tall (well over 6 feet)

Cristina Parodi might be worth further investigation. No obvious discrepancies and she has a similar nose. (http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/p/parodi_cristina.html)

I'll check doenet and namus later.

IMO Pippi was a nickname derived from BG's appearance if she is indeed this girl remembered by the person from Denton. Pippi Longstocking was still super popular when I was a kid (mid-1980s) & this was pre-Internet so young adult books/cartoons tended to be less varied....(i.e. it would be an easy nickname to assign to a redheaded "free spirit" girl.)

Not bagging on any suggestions. Just adding some observations. Also the old clothing BG was wearing makes sense if she was an unwanted foster kid- I've heard of plenty of situations where a stray kid is barely clothed/fed & encouraged to "hit the road" because they don't bring income into a household. (Yes, a lot of people treat kids like that.)

side note- in the late 1970s - early 1980s there were oil booms happening in Texas and other parts of the nation....BG might have taken up with someone working in the oil field. Especially if she was unwanted at home, she might have viewed a boyfriend with a good job as a "way out" of being broke & also escaping a bad past.

I'm sure it's already been suggested but the buckskin coat might have been a gift- if BG did come from a tragic background, a lot of people would have been willing to give her things she needed until she found a place she wanted to settle down & build a life. & Of course she might have "borrowed" the coat & never gave it back.

I'm hoping porvn can track down the old friend who was possibly acquainted with BG.

Statistically, only (approx.) 2% of the world's population are natural redheads. Scotland and Ireland have the highest percentages, and the U.S. (due to high immigration from Scots Irish) have a high end estimate of 4-6% of the populace as natural redheads.

This makes Porvn's theory of PiPi quite interesting. Right era, the report of the Buckskin coat, as well as the background of a troubled childhood, and leaving the relatives house to fend on her own. This all fits a strong profile, along with Porvn's assertion that "Pipi" really looks like the rendering of Buckskin girl.

This is the closest I think we have come, at least that I can tell. Porvn, we are eagerly awaiting this photo! Any one of us can talk you through uploading or post directions if necessary.

Holding my breath!

These new developments have brought back a lot of memories for me...I grew up in an impoverished area (so did a lot of my friends ) & it wasn't uncommon for families to push unwanted kids out of the nest. ("Mouths to feed" and all that.) Plenty of women I know had 1st marriages of convenience or just had a baby & shacked up to collect welfare money they needed to survive. & Some of the males I knew who didn't want to stay at home either took hard labor jobs off the books to survive or bummed around until they found somewhere to be. I *know* in America we sugarcoat these kinds of things because ..pride. But many people will admit to surfing couches or living in their car when life got a little too hard. Maybe that's why so many people keep checking on the BG case, she most probably was a kid who fell through the cracks. It could happen to most of us.

Sadly, this social condition seems worse today then ever. There are so many foster kids who have been thrown out at age 18, and ill eqipped to take care of themselves. The highest percentage of homeless teens are LGBT, whether foster or not. It's a sad commentary, but fortunately there are caring and loving souls. Many can be found on Websleuths.

It also makes sense, if the circumstances are right, that BSG could have had a different birth name to her foster name, which makes me think she could have been reported missing under another a name which is less familiar (her birth name).
Looking through the name definitions online, I liked the fact that Pippi/y means horse lover. I know a we discussed the horse ranch and riding schools in the area, thinking she may have had contact with them. But I think seeing that the jacket had been tested forensically, if she had had contact with animals, there would have been some sort of evidence on her clothing.

If her name was spelt with a 'Y' (Pippy) - it is short for Phillipa
Pippy - as a name for girls is of Greek derivation, and Pippy means "horse lover; lover of horses".
Pippy is an uncommonly occurring first name for females.
Pippy is an equally unusual last name for both adults and children. (2000 U.S. DEMOGRAPHICS)

Pippa and Pippi are nicknames for Philippa also, which was and is a fairly common name in the UK. Pippa Middleton's name is Philippa.

I just reread an article about the pollen tests done on her clothes. It mentioned Mass or Rhode island as possible origins. (And other states). I know there are high concentrations of reheads in both states. Im going to place my bet on rhode island. Purely a guess, but remote enough to where word of Buckskin girl might not be as prevalent

Thanks for looking for them carbuff.
I went to NAMUS last night to see if I could do a search, and was amazed that putting 'P' in the name and surname got so many results - (28 I think) and then the site went down, I couldn't get it to refresh without a timeout. Glad you had more luck!

Her name could be Mary Philippa "Something". And her nickname could be from her middle name. My nickname comes from my middle name. My son's does also as his first name is same as his father. Tradition in his father's side of family to give first son the first name they both have

Porvn, where are you? I'm going bonkers waiting for this picture! : )

I agree with you 100%.. Anyone who grew up in the 70"s and Early 80s totally remembers Pippi LongStockings!!!... funny.. and now that Porvn verified she had the freckles and was Irish w red hair always in the braids.. I can totally see where the nickname Pippi came from!!!!!

I was thinking since the testing on her jacket says she could of come from Mass.. I was thinking maybe Boston.. they are A lot of Irish there.. My exboyfriends father had a bar named O'Malleys in Boston.. and is nickname was RED because when he was young he had red hair! By the time I met him was all grey.

Porvn also mentioned she believe Pipi had a younger Brother.. I wonder what became of him... and if he became old enough tried to look for his sister.. I hope Porvn posts the photo up soon..

I would be interesting to know where in Denton the store that they were caught shop lifting was in...

So the Father supposedly killed her mother.. I wonder how long from the time she was in Denton from the time her mother died.?? So many questions!!!
This is exciting... I do hope Porvn comes back on the thread soon.

I suspect the name Pippi would come from Pippi Longstockings, a children's literary character with red hair and dual pigtails.

If BG always wore her hair like that, the name Pippi would be an understandable nickname.

It sounds from porvn's post that her name came from Pippi Longstocking - a girl with red hair and braids from books. He also stated he thinks her actual name was Mary.

But a long time ago on this thread I was fooling around with Google maps, looking at the routes one might take from that general OK/TX area to the northeast. Back then a lot of people used TripTiks from AAA to get best routes since there were no Google maps. I know we also considered hitchhiking which might have put her on a more indirect route, or buses, etc.

Isotope testing said she may have come from places like the following: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts or Rhode Island. When I look at those places on the map, some of those areas had more direct routes to get there from Denton. The further north and the further inland you go within that area, and/or the closer you stay to Ohio, the more her route makes sense to me. So my hunch is to look in NY outside of NYC, Western Conneticut and Massachusetts, Vermont, NH, potentially Maine. But upstate NY is my hunch, although I can't be sure it's right.

"Bobo" Shinn looks like Buckskin to me, I'm hoping Pippi is her but I'm just throwing that out there.

if she has been posted on here (which I am sure she has because all you guys are good) but I actually saw this now as I was searching for siblings looking for missing sister.

Yes, I'm fairly certain that Patricia Taylor was ruled out as BG, it's somewhere on the Find Patricia Taylor FB page, but you'll have to go back to last year to find that post on her FB page, iirc
