GUILTY OK - Aesusena Gonzalez for starving, abusing 5yo girl, Oklahoma City, 2011

  • #21
AnaTeresa brings up a good point. Targeting a single child is called scapegoating and is a crime as old as time. We've had many many threads concerning this dynamic. Not only the abused child suffers but it's been found that other children in the family develop a lack of empathy.

Wikipedia has a very good overview of the practice~"Scapegoating".

The DHS worker told police it was alleged that the girl was the target of the abuse because she looked like her father, and Gonzales doesn't like him.

I cannot imagine this ... my own 5 yo is more than 3x the size of this little girl. That none of them stepped into help is sickening.

sadly, with the current mandate of DCF being family reunification rather than what is best for the child, it is entirely possible that given counselling, and resources such as parenting classes, if this lady even goes to jail, once she is released she could very well fight for and win the right to retain her parental rights and custody of this poor child.

When is this country going to wake up to the fact that family reunification and the good of the child are often in direct contradiction? And if your focus remains on family reunification to the exclusion of what is for the good of the child, we will continue to see dead, starved tortured children, again and again and again.

I hope and pray this awful woman, who obviously hates this child and has made her the scapegoat for all her rage against the child's father, simply decides she is better off without her and leaves her alone. I really do. If she at least has the sense to do that - this little girl may have a shot. If this human incubator ever gets hold of here again, this child won't live to tell the tale.

Much of the impetus for family reunification comes as a result of religous fundamentalists who view the family as a sacrosanct entity, and political forces representing them (and us) who vote for low funding for state social programs. This results in a lack of desirable, funded, options.

I am familiar with some of the dynamics behind the long standing family reunification mission. I just wish I knew the answers to how to rectify the horrific dangers that this initiative has come to represent to children who we have charged those agencies to protect.

The grandmother of a severely malnourished Oklahoma City girl who was kept in a house closet pleaded guilty Wednesday to enabling child neglect.

Maria Gonzales, 51, was put on probation for five years. She admitted she periodically stayed with her daughter, knew about the neglect and failed to do enough to stop it. She also faces possible deportation, records show.

Also pleading guilty Wednesday to enabling child neglect was Sergio Macias Almeida, 28. He admitted he regularly visited the house on weekends, knew the child was mistreated and also didn't do enough to stop it.

A young girl who nearly died after being locked in a closet for two years by her monster mother is not only surviving, she is thriving

Unfazed, Amanda and Clint Lile took the girl in, giving her the name Georgia - and lots of love. In the care of her foster parents, she started kindergarten. She reads Dr. Seuss and laughs all the time, things she never did while locked in the closet for two terrifying years.

Does anyone remember the three children in Denver CO about a year ago? Nearly the same thing. Children Services came and got the. But then never heard any more about it. I hope this child gets the help they need.

The media really ticks me off sometimes. Some celebrity can literally show their a$$ on stage and it's all over the news for months. And cases like these are reported for maybe a day or two and forgotten by them. JMO's
