GUILTY OK - Christopher Lane, 22, Australian, slain in thrill killing, Duncan, 16 Aug 2013

The media and the chief of police absolutely need to correct the Bang 2 reference. They were completely wrong. The fact that all media outlets are still reporting it that way is atrocious bc they've all been made aware of what the true reference was, plus the date. If they don't correct it pronto, it will not shed good light on the chief's character. They need to correct it so as not to look like fools in court for crying out loud. These kids are guilty as sin - that's absolutely apparent - but wrong info in evidence against a murder 1 criminal can come back to bite the prosecutors hiney.

The poster was comparing what Deen said to what the Killers have said on social media sites, nothing more nothing less. jmo

d'oh...I misread the OP as referring to consequences twenty years ago, not consequences today for something that happened twenty years ago. Not going to say anything else about it (hi mods!). Just wanted to clarify that I don't live under a rock lol

I hate the debate over the n word. Every single one of these kids used it in their vocabulary on a daily basis. Look at their social media. This isn't another race saying that word to them. This isn't another race holding them down. This is them holding their own selves down. I hate it when people use their upbringing & surroundings as an excuse to be a loser 🤬🤬🤬🤬 criminal. If anything, growing up hard should make a person work harder to have a better life and future. I'm so sick and tired of feeling sorry for a bunch of 🤬🤬🤬🤬 juvies in our society just bc they didn't have the best of an upbringing. I'm so tired of all the excuses.

Cry me a damn river.

http://www.newson6.com/story/7645766/oklahomas-youthful-offender-law?clienttype=printable

From Link: A 16 year old youthful offender, might go to jail, although they're kept separate from the grownups. The maximum sentence they can get is 10 years. If they do all the right things, they'll be released when they're 21 and their record can be sealed.

BBM: Unbelievable! There is no way MJ should only get out in 10 years if he is involved. Charge him as an adult with less crimes, if he is not as culpable! I can't believe a 17 year old is being charged as a juvenile in this case. His record can be sealed? :furious:

What about a youthful offender that is being tried in adult court? I'm asking bc media is informing he can get up to 45 years.

He said the three youths followed Lane in Jones' 2003 Ford Focus after he ran past a home where they had gathered.

Hicks said Edwards was cold and callous throughout the investigation and when he was being processed into the Stephens County jail he danced at the booking desk.

“His demeanor was this whole thing was one big joke,” Hicks said. “He thinks it's funny.”

Snipped:
"Tourists thinking of going to the USA should think twice,'' Mr Fischer said.
"This is the bitter harvest and legacy of the policies of the NRA that even blocked background checks for people buying guns at gunshows.

"People should take this into account before going to the United States.
"I am deeply angry about this because of the callous attitude of the three teenagers (but) it's a sign of the proliferation of guns on the ground in the USA.

"There is a gun for almost every American.''

Actually, I read we were third in guns per capita, behind Norway and Canada.

Oh dear. Has the media ever done as bad a job in reporting any other serious crime? So far we've had the following clangers...

1) Three juveniles are facing the death penalty.

2) All three defendants are black

3) A facebook about music reported as gloating about the murder

4) A defendant reported as confessing in open court when he actually denied it in open court.

5) A former deputy PM reported as a current deputy PM.

6) At least one news report still thinks the defendants can be sentenced to LWOP

These people get paid good salaries for reporting these clangers, while we all post here for free - and we do a better job of getting it right!

Worth repeating...

I have to wonder if there is something wrong with him. Some kind of mental illness, if he thinks "it's funny". :waitasec:

JMO but kids who know they can get off without much time spent don't care (anymore) who they kill. They have no feelings for others. They SHOULD get the death penalty. They should never walk on the streets again.

They could always charge this as a racial hate crime which would bring a heavier penalty.

Edwards was using crips hash tags... So I'd like to know if there was a true connection, as in could this have been an initiation? Or was he just trying to look big & bad by using a couple of their signature hash tags?

He probably thought being a juvenile he will get a slip on the wrist. He can think again.

There's no evidence that it was a racial hate crime. As far as we can tell so far it seems to have been a thrill kill by bored teens, like that girl who shot her teacher and two classmates because she didn't like Mondays. Or Leopold and Loeb, who I think another poster has already mentioned.

Man who dobbed in suspects accused of murdering Melbourne baseball player Chris Lane says his son was next

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/ma...his-son-was-next/story-fni0fiyv-1226700172461

James Johnson, 52, called the police to tell them that the accused killers were hiding in the car park of the Immauel Baptist Church car park at about 5pm, two hours after they allegedly shot Lane.

"They threatened to kill my son because they are in a gang, the Crips, and were trying to get my son in it and I wouldn't let him do it.

"I told him he couldn't run with those boys. He's a little terrified."

Mr Johnson said the Crips, a predominantly African American street gang that began in Los Angeles in 1969 and had been in Duncan for the past few years.

Well, the accurate report of what caused the 17 yo to break down in court was him learning that he faced a LONG sentence. That seems more consistent with him facing 45 years than 10 for being involved in "murder for fun" -- or maybe he really did think he'd get a slap on the wrist since he didn't pull the trigger himself. Unfortunately, that wouldn't necessarily be an unwarranted conclusion given what some criminals get away with in this country. Especially if they're minors.

My guess is that they gave him youthful offender status because he wasn't the shooter; confessed; agreed to testify against the other two; possibly isn't so far gone down the criminal path that there's some chance he can turn it around; and maybe he showed some remorse. In other words, a combination of factors, with maybe some suggesting that he's not a completely lost cause at the age of 17. Not to mention that, having snitched on the other two, he's likely a dead man walking whether or not he goes to prison. Personally, I don't care if he gets 45 years or more. I'm just theorizing on why he may have been charged differently. jmo

I also urge all the folks who are trying to make this into a racial issue, or some sort of "why are kids these days so bad?" issue to look up thrill killers - young people who kill out of "boredom" or to "see what it's like". From Leopoldo and Loeb, to Mary Bell, Parker and Hulme, the NJ high schoolers who attacked a mentally disabled girl, etc etc... It's unfortunately not new. And it's certainly not a matter of race (unless you want to maybe argue that it's a white thing, since the overwhelming number of thrill killers seems to be white). :twocents:

We must be looking at different photos then because he looks Caucasian to me. One of the two "black" defendants looks light skinned enough to be mixed race, are you sure you're not confusing them?

He is bi-racial.

No, I am not confusing anything. I believe two older defendants are both biracial-at least that's how it looks to me.

He is bi-racial.

The pic I saw on fb last night was no bi-racial person, he was as white as me and I'm Irish. Either that pic is wrong or the media have got it wrong again, normally I'd doubt the facebook post but with this case, who knows?

You can't just go by the skin tone.

One thing is bothering me and it hasn't really been reported on. They shot Chris in an upscale neighborhood. So, was that their intention...to go shoot a random person in an upscale neighborhood away from where they live? What is the demographic in that neighborhood? If its not diverse, then it could lend credence to why some people are making this a racial hate crime bc maybe they believe it is.

Again, wish race could stay out of it. If it did play a factor then I'll be all over it digging stuff up. Hoping its not. I want racism to end.
