With all due respect, you need your eyes examined. It's a little boy giving a flower to his mother.

:floorlaugh: Lighten up. I was kidding.

I just can't do another case centered around race. I can't.

I'm not saying that's happening here (I don't think it is) but that's what the media seems to be trying to shove down our throats and I can't do it again. So, I am going to back away from this case. I hope Chris gets justice (whatever that may mean when you're dead by the hand of another...).

I hear what you're saying.

"90% of white ppl are nasty. #HATE THEM."

That, up there, makes it kind of hard to keep race from being an issue, or a driving force, though.

I don't know about anyone else...but I was laughing at (with) both of you...

"Is that a gang sign??????"
"You need your eyes examined!!"

Ugh. I re-state my former comment.

Thugs. Strung up. Good riddance. Not sorry.

I know. I can't believe anyone's defending them or trying to mitigate their motives.

Sounds racist to me.

Of course it is. But one can't talk about it. :shush: :censored:

And for the record, I do not want this thread shut down. Like another one was. So, I am hoping we can all discuss this without getting to that point. :twocents:

Jesse Jackson tweets that killing of Chris Lane ‘frowned upon’

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said in a tweet Wednesday that the killing of an Australian baseball player, allegedly by three Oklahoma teenagers who were bored, is “senseless violence” and should be “frowned upon.”

My mouth's still hanging open from the piece in Time. Not so much that the author wrote it, because I have seen some black journalists, academicians try to speak to it, but that Time PRINTED it!

I think race plays a part based on the issues within intercity crimes; think the city Chicago.

I think knowing that there is a breakdown somewhere, somehow (not placing blame), its important as a country to start speaking about it, all of us. We need to create places and activities that take these children, young men and women, that think all they have is the "way of the streets" and give them more. That give them something tangible to respect themselves so they can learn they matter, that EVERYONE matters.

I am firm believer in the YMCA, parks, after school programs that enrich learning (stuff like free computer programs, or free language classes.) Gosh, there is so many more things that we can help with in these areas. We need to offer the next generation a glimmer of hope, or at least a hobby they can enjoy, so they don't get swept up in the tragic violence that occurs in these cities.

In *theory* you are correct, imo. However, how can any of those programs compete with raging hormones, the lack of critical thinking, inner rage and the so-called glamour that the gangsta' lifestyle can bring?

I think your idea is another example of a clash of theory vs. application (reality). But I admire your thought process and sociological approach. I really do.

I know Time is well respected and doesn't shy away from certain issues, but I'm kind of floored by this article...

http://ideas.time.com/2013/08/22/viewpoint-dont-ignore-race-in-christopher-lanes-murder/

Honestly I think all of this is being focused on because the victim is Australian and this is causing an international stir with foreign journalists taking an interest in it.

If it had been an American guy killed like this? No big deal, likely a robbery attempt, back page story move along there is nothing to see here etc... Just like the Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom murders were a back page story for the American public at large.

Christopher Lane Update: Murder suspect James Edwards, Jr. tweeted about "taken life's" before fatal shooting
By Erin Donaghue Topics

Snipped:
Three days before the Friday shooting, during which police say Lane was shot in the back, Edwards apparently tweeted under the Twitter handle @Jamesakabug, writing, "With my n----- when it's time to start taken (sic) life's."

Snipped:
Police said Jones later admitted the boys were "bored" and killed Lane "for fun." Witnesses said Lane fell into a ditch panting with blood on his back before emergency personnel arrived.

"They saw Christopher go by, and one of them said: 'There's our target,' Police Chief Dan Ford. "The boy who has talked to us said, 'We were bored and didn't have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody.'"

Edwards also tweeted several times about guns and being a "🤬🤬🤬🤬." In June, Edwards tweeted: "Lol she said we fake thugs but she also said we carry guns Ain't that what thugs do not saying I do carry a firearm. Just pointing that out."

The tweet was posted several months before the shooting and before a parent of one of the teens charged in the case told CBS affiliate KWTV in Oklahoma City her son and his friends were in a "wannabe gang." It's not clear who Edwards was referring to in the tweet.

Edwards is also seen in a video posted on the Vine video-sharing application apparently pointing a rifle.

"(Expletive) we up dem poles," Edwards says in the video, pointing the rifle at the camera. "(Expletive) with me."

'Christopher Lane Fund' Helps Grieving Family Of Killed College Baseball Player

Snipped:
The Redlands Community College coach who brought Lane to America remembered him Wednesday as a player with heart and passion. Matt Newgent said this wasn't necessarily enough to translate to a professional baseball career, but that Lane's talent secured him a college education.

"Chris was such a level-headed guy. He knew his limitations," said Newgent. "He knew in his heart of hearts he wouldn't make the majors."

Lane, who was about to become a senior, started 14 games at catcher last season and he hit .250.

Lane had been playing baseball for the Essendon Baseball Club in Australia when Newgent recruited him. A former principal at Lane's prep school in Melbourne said Thursday that Lane could have played Australian Rules football, but that he gave that up to pursue baseball - a minor sport in Australia.

"He was involved in other sports. He was a very good AFL (Australian Football League) footballer and could have gone on, I'm sure, in that area. He was a member of our athletics team, it was a champion team. He was very good that way and worked hard at his studies," Frank FitzGerald said.

At Redlands, Lane met Sarah Harper, a collegiate golfer from Duncan. Friends expected them to marry after graduation.

"They were really a good couple and fun to be around," Newgent said.

Harper transferred to Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond during Lane's last year at Redlands. When Lane was looking to move from the community college to a four-year college to finish his degree, he wanted to stay in Oklahoma "because Sarah was in Oklahoma," Newgent said.

Snipped:
An online fund set up to help Lane's parents travel to Oklahoma to collect his body topped AU$90,000 ($81,200) on Thursday.

I want to know all I can about this problem that is plaguing America. I want to know all the stats. I want to be able to read and comment about the stats and discover avenues to bring about a solution *without* being called a racist.

I want to learn about the issue without it being sugar-coated. It needs to be studied, talked about, and theorized.

There will not be an answer until the stats are revealed. Let's see the numbers, the raw data.

Then we can attempt at coming up with a solution.

ATasteofhoney, I've had this in my buffer but afraid to post it for like an hour:

I'm reasonably smart, but nothing makes me feel dumber than issues like this. We're at a point where you cannot discuss any of it without being called a racist and I never know what opinions I'm allowed to have from day to day. My brain works in such a way that I want to see facts and statistics, but certain statistics are, I guess, too inflammatory to acknowledge. So the problem cannot be effectively broken down and dealt with. (And of course I'm trying to come at this from some idealistic/intellectual angle, which doesn't take into account the fact that there are lots of *actual ignorant racists* on both sides who don't care about stats or problem-solving, and I guess they're the reason we can't talk about it effectively or without rancor.)

It's very hard not to feel hopeless.

My sentiments exactly. Hopeless, that's exactly how I feel.

Glad you posted this.

My hope is that we can continue to discuss these things in a rational manner. The facts are the facts.

Murder weapon still missing

Snipped:
According to the affidavit, Shoemake said he Jones wasn’t going to talk, he would take him back to the cell. Jones said he couldn’t tell the detective who shot Lane because if he did, “he would get killed.”
As Jones was being escorted back to his cell, Shoemake talked to him and said they needed to find the gun so a child wouldn’t find it and get hurt. Jones told him that the gun had been given to someone else.
“Someone that had two brothers inside the jail,” Jones said, according to the affidavit.
Shoemake said that could be a lot of people.
Jones, according to the affidavit, responded, “He has two brothers in here for armed robbery.”

Snipped:
What they did find in their search was a .22 caliber bullet located under the cold air inductor, a large amount of .22 LR and .22 short bullets inside the main fuse box and one spent .22 LR case under the back seat cushion. Also a 12 gauge disassembled shotgun was found in the trunk of the car under the spare tire, all listed in the affidavit.
Officers visited the individual they believed might have had the gun, who gave them permission to search his residence. No gun was located. The man told Sgt. Danny Foraker that all three boys had come to his house, but he did not want to get involved.
The affidavit noted that the boys left the residence and did not leave a gun there.
