Omaha Double Murder #2

I just got off the phone with a friend who attended the unveiling. There will be an article and picture in tommorrow morning's World Herald. I won't be here to attach a link, we are leaving on vacation but coming back next weekend. Maybe one of you others can find the article and post it?
The sculpture was done by someone at CU's art department and is six feet high in bronze. It depicts Tom with some animals.
I also understand that memorial funds have been set up for scholorships in his name. All very nice.
Life goes on.

Haven't posted in awhile but do read from time to time. I am so happy that they are honoring Tom's memory with the sculpture and scholarships, he will always be remembered as will Shirlee and her kindness.

What a lovely tribute to Tom! The sculpture really does capture his essence. (although I've only seen him in photos)

It makes me sad that this bright young man's (and Shirlee's too) life was snatched away. What kind of of person would do such a thing?

Happy Birthday Tom. May you RIP. I hope OPD finds out who did this to you and brings them to justice.

I have been researching similar murders and found this one right here on WS. What really caught my eye is neighbors referred to the perp as 'Columbine' because of the way he dressed. 'Columbine' is how I would think of the perp's description in Tom and Shirlee's murder. Here's the link......

Other neighbors described the Menards as people who kept to themselves. Next-door neighbor Shelly Ontiveros, who lived next to the Menards for seven years, said David Menard was initially friendly, but objected to people parking in front of his house and would turn his lawn sprinklers on their cars.

Neighbor Rita Horwitz said she and her husband nicknamed David Menard "Vietnam" because his demeanor would be friendly one day and "weird" the next. They called Brandon "Columbine" because the trenchcoat he sometimes wore reminded them of the 1999 school massacre.

This guy has been in jail without bail since '06 and still hasn't gone to trial. The fact that the adoptive son was arrested should not be inferred that I think any of the Hunter sons or Sherman sons were involved in Tom and Shirlee's murder. Surely both families have been investigated by OPD. All MOO.

Hope I got the links right. I seem to have trouble with those........

Remembering Tom and Shirlee and their families.

OK I am building off my own post here as we seem to be at a standstill on discussion of theories and opinions but I'm going to post my latest thoughts anyway.

First of all, I'd like to say Thank YOU! to skywalker for the link to the unveiling of the Bonze statue in Tom's memory.

:Welcome-12-june:
I hope you will join us in our discussion.

The visual of the 'Columbine' dress of the perp who committed these murders DOES make me feel as though this perp is young in age. This along with the LE interview where it was stated that the focus is on computer forensics (possible online gaming, although not stated) has me curious about the games that Tom played. Could the perp have been disguised as a character in one of these games who's description matches?
I wish I knew more of these video games. I have researched them and realize the games are ever changing from one year to the next. The popular games from 2008 are now outdated. But I am curious about it.

I also wonder if Tom was bullied in school but have no evidence of that other than my own curiosity.

'Columbine' style dress seems Goth-like IMO. Does anyone know if there is a video game character who resembles the perps description?

Sometimes, I really wonder what is going on with our young ones these days. We read here daily about crimes committed by very young people and I wonder WHY? I mean, heck, I twirled sabres in HS band but never considered using them to stab someone. What kind of person would do such a thing?

All MOO and speculation and besides I wished to bump up the thread from page 2.

Hope you're all well. We have a good group here and it bothers me when the thread is pushed back.

My thinking lately has been along the same lines- I wonder if all the speculation we've been engaging in about hit men, angry medical student/ ex patients, etd- has been off the mark.
What if- the killer was someone just a few years older than Tom- say 16-18 years old? Someone who'd interacted with Tom online and fell out with him over some gaming issue. Perhaps an older brother of one of his friends who just decided to experience a 'thrill' killing? In that case he perhaps lives nearby, maybe with parents. I had long felt that the method of killing indicated someone expert, but you can find anything on line, even how to best kill someone.
I was away on vaction for the past week and will do my part to keep the thread bumped up.

Glad you are back Snick! Hope your vaca was fun and relaxing!

Back on topic. YD has felt conviction all along that the perp lived nearby and it got me thinking. The alleged breakins in the neighborhood around the time of the murders also has me going hmmmmm. What if Tom spotted these theives breaking into a home one day while walking home from the bus stop?
That would surely give someone motive. Means? Disguised himself so not to be recognized. Also online information on method of killing. Opportunity...lives closeby but not so close that he knew exactly which house he was looking for. I think he was on the phone with someone who was giving him directions to the Hunter home which would explain the stopping and starting.

I don't know if this all makes sense. I'm just thinking and typing.

All MOO.

I do think it was someone from the area that knew Tom. Maybe Tom was mooching money from the guy, never paying it back and he came to collect or perhaps the killer was borrowing from Tom and the well ran dry so to speak with Tom refusing this time. Maybe the killer had a drug problem and thought Tom, son of two doctors, could provide his next fix.

I mean the reason for the killing could be something as illogical as that. Kids can also let a grudge build up until it boils over.

The coat may have been a disguise but it was in March (still winter). The man in the overcoat may not even exist. We aren't even sure the killer entered through the front door.

This case makes me feel like we are right on top of something but just can't pinpoint it.

If this was someone who knew Tom, but didn't know him well, they probably wouldn't even know there was a cleaning lady and would have expected Tom to be home alone after school. Tom may have been expecting him and that is why he was in the dining room and not downstairs on his computer.

I wonder if we'll ever know what really happened that day.

I wonder the same thing YD. You may be correct with your theory re: The perp thinking Tom was home alone. If this is the case, then Shirlee was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I still think the perp was tracking Tom thru his online gaming. Here is my theory....Tom returns home from school, ready to chill and wind down before he begins his homework. this is his usual routine every day. Also, he plays on the same 'team' each afternoon. Some of the team members identities aren't known to Tom but some are, because playing at this time of day would make sense that his friends play, as well as High School kids who probably are dismissed at the same time as middle school students.(based on knowledge of our local school schedules.)

One of the unknown team members Tom was playing with was communicating with the perp because every day at the same time, Tom played this game upon returning home. Tom paused the game to go have his snack before starting his homework. (Boys his age are starving when they get home from school.) I feel the perps knew his routine and this would explain the dark man in the silver SUV reportedly talking on his mobile, starting and stopping. Whoever was on the other end of that phone conversation informed the man in the SUV when Tom paused the game to go upstairs and eat his snack, so he knew Tom would be upstairs at this time and thought it would be an easy 'in and out'.....but Shirlee was there, which complicated things.

However, my 'gut' tells me that Shirlee's movements may have been tracked the days preceeding the murders. This is why I have questions about 'was this Shirlee's regular day' to work for the Hunters or was she putting in some extra hours during Claire Hunter's absence? Regardless, the perp somehow seemed to know a good time to strike and Shirlee may have been considered 'collateral damage'. Sorry I had to type that.

Another scenario, would be what you suggested....That Tom may have been expecting this person, for whatever reason. If so, then perhaps he felt intimidated or uneasy about this visit and scheduled it at a time when he knew Shirlee was at the home for safety reasons.

However, I do strongly feel that more than one person may be involved and I now think the persons are younger in age. This is based on my novice profiling of the evidence we have......
1)Columbine/ goth style of dress, ie, long coat. Based on knowledge from the young Columbine perps they dressed in long coats to commit the massacre. For some reason, I think this style of dress projects a false sense of power and importance and incognito, but JMO.

2)Honda CRV. This would be a perfect family auto to pass along to a child
when they turn 16 and receive their license. Again JMO. This vehicle is also popular for transporting a family dog. I googled 'target demographic for Honda CRV' here's a link.....http://www.cargodogs.com/2008/01/2008-honda-crv.htm

I wonder if any stray dog hairs were found in OPD's forensic investigation?

Another question I have is where exactly did Dr. Hunter find Shirlee's body? We know she was reportedly found 'by the stairs' but there is nothing published stating if her body was found upstairs or down. Previous news articles states that Dr. H found Shirlee's body first, by the stairs, but doesn't stipulate on which level. Maybe this is something that LE is keeping close. I know from personal experience when returning from work, I would immediately call out "I'm home!", but walk a beeline to my BR to 'change hats' for the day. So is this line of questioning out of line if the H's BR was upstairs?

I have many more thoughts but must close because I have unexpected company who just came to visit. This is a long post anyway. But at least some points to ponder for now. More later.

I am wishing a happy Father's Day to all of our Dad's who post here.

I am in Omaha and have followed this case and thread for a long time. I posted a couple times in the past but never felt I had too much else to add. I have heard rumors - just as about everyone in Omaha has - but nothing concrete or substantial. I wish I had more to contribute.

shan32, Thank's for posting. I hope you continue contributing to our discussion and it is great to have another Omaha local on board!

I seem to have lost my manners as I've been distracted lately and somehow missed your post! My sincerest apologies! However, better late than never, so I want to give you a hearty

:Welcome-12-june: to WS!

Glad you finally posted, I was a long time lurker here as well!

Something is bothering me about the jacket the POI was seen wearing by wittnesses. It was allegedly a dark/black jacket. Has anyone seen anything to indicate what style of jacket this was? I'd always envisioned this as an ordinary short type of jacket men wear, but was it a suit jacket or longer trench style coat? The latter would fit with the 'Columbine' sort of image.
I seem to recall Dr Hunter saying he noticed Shirlee's body when hanging up his coat in the kitchen so it must have been sprawled in the hallway, possibly with her feet visable from the kitchen.
I have not been able to shake the impression that she was killed after Tom who was perhaps killed silently and quickly. The perp than came up on her from behind. I do wish we could see a floorplan of the house.

I thought reports early on described the man in an overcoat with a briefcase. To me, this would mean a long coat and not a jacket type. I, too, remember reading that Shirlee's body was found in the hallway which I presumed would be the center hallway of the home between the living room and the dining room and leading to the kitchen. That is the way most homes with center hall floorplans are laid out. If the killer entered through the front door, I think Tom would have been the first victim. If he entered through the back or side door, I think Shirlee would have been killed first.

YellowDog, This is my impression also, thus the 'Columbine' description in style of dress, MOO. I'll see if I can find a link somewhere stating the perp wore a long coat.

Those boys who terrorized Columbine wore long 'trench' coats which hid the guns they carried.

I also assumed that the home is laid out as you described considering it is an older home. (would it be considered an historic home?) We can only visualize what we do know about older homes since we don't have an actual floor plan of the Hunter home. I used to live in an older home which seems like the description of the H home.....basement, ground floor with LR, DR, Bath & Kitchen. Upstairs with BR's and bath, stairs go up the middle of the house. It was built in the late 30's, IIRC.

All JMO.

OK YD, I have made it to page six of the 1st thread and have not found anything as yet regarding the length of the dark coat the 'dark skinned man' was wearing.

However i snipped this from Snick's post #144, page 6, thread 1. I thought it an informative interview of Dr Bill Hunter by John Ferak of Omaha World Herald.

The web site of the OWH now has the full story posted, here it is:

Dundee slaying victim's dad: 'Keep this case alive'
BY JOHN FERAK

Dr. William Hunter III had just one hint that something was amiss when he arrived home from work last March 13: His housecleaner's white Ford Taurus was parked in the driveway.

Tom HunterShirlee Sherman usually finished work about 4:30 p.m., so Hunter wondered for a moment why she still was there an hour and 15 minutes later. With his wife, Dr. Claire Hunter, out of town, Bill Hunter planned to spend the evening with his 11-year-old son, Tom.

Hunter had no idea of the horrific discovery he was about to make.

Moments after he walked in the back door, Hunter stopped to take off his coat. As he reached toward the coat rack, he saw Sherman's body slumped on the floor of a hallway.

The doctor yelled for his son. Tom didn't answer. Hunter ran downstairs, where he found his son's Xbox game system on pause. Hunter then ran back upstairs and into the dining room, where he found his son's body sprawled on the floor, covered with blood.

Tom and Sherman had both been fatally stabbed.

Last week, Hunter gave his first interview. He told The World-Herald he fears that the nearly year-old investigation has reached a standstill, and he wants to encourage people to share any information they might have with police. The family of Sherman, who had worked for the Hunters for about two years, shared similar concerns.

"Somehow we, the families, as well as the public, need to keep the pressure on to keep this case alive," said Hunter, 64. "It is just killing us as a family, not knowing who and why."

The daytime slayings jolted the historic Dundee neighborhood and the Omaha community. The stabbings claimed the lives of a sixth-grader at King Science and Technology Magnet Center and a 57-year-old woman who was a mother and grandmother.

Despite following up on hundreds of leads, authorities have made no arrests.

Omaha Police Lt. Kerry Neumann, who oversees the homicide unit, said the case remains "very much an active investigation."

Because of the ongoing investigation, Neumann declined to discuss many details of the case, including possible suspects and leads still being pursued. However, he said he does not consider the slayings to be a cold case.

"I have got my best people working on this thing. Sometimes these investigations take awhile before they are solved," he said. "This is still a workable case."

The FBI is assisting in the investigation, and a $25,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to an arrest.

Neumann said the Hunter family has been extremely cooperative, and no family members are considered suspects.

He said a big obstacle for detectives has been an inability to locate a man whom neighbors reported seeing outside the Hunter home on the afternoon of the slayings. The man reportedly was driving a sport utility vehicle with no front license plate.

A neighbor reported that the vehicle moved conspicuously down the street, starting and stopping as if the driver were looking for an address.

Because no neighbor wrote down the rear license plate number or called 911 when they saw the car, finding the vehicle has been difficult, Neumann said.

"Where do you start without a license plate?" he asked. "It's a general vehicle, and there are literally thousands of those."

Neumann said it remains important to locate and question the man.

"It is never too late to give information. We are following up on all leads," he said. "There is a very dangerous person still out there."

Hunter has spent the past 11 months trying to figure out who that dangerous person is. He remains baffled why anyone would want to kill his son.

He said no valuables were taken from the home. Sherman's purse was on the kitchen counter with $800 cash inside - money her family believes was from her cleaning business and a rental property. A new digital camera and lenses were in the living room, Hunter said.

"Was (Tom) in the wrong place or was it deliberate?" he asked. He also asks himself whether Sherman was the target.

"It's just devastated us. We're not sure what happened. Both Claire and I had a very uneventful, good life until this."

Hunter said Omaha detectives told him that they have found no evidence that the family was targeted. The Hunters also have three adult sons, ages 26, 23 and 21.

"We don't have gambling debts," Hunter said. "We have not been the targets of any threats."

Bill Hunter is a professor and the residency program director for Creighton University Medical Center's department of pathology. Claire Hunter is an associate professor of medicine and director of Creighton's cardiovascular fellowship training program.

Claire Hunter was in Hawaii for a conference when she heard from a friend that police were at her house. She reached her husband on his cell phone as he met with detectives. Bill Hunter gave his wife the dreadful news, and she immediately caught a flight to Omaha.

Bill Hunter said investigators probed his family's financial records, computers, e-mail accounts and phone records.

The Hunters and other Creighton faculty provided detectives with the names of a half dozen former medical residents and students who may have left the university disgruntled, Bill Hunter said. Police tracked residents to locations as far away as Mexico and Canada, he said.

Police identified the people who played online video games with Tom and checked on his school bus drivers.

Detectives reviewed delivery drivers and workers who had done remodeling or repairs to the family's house.

None of the leads panned out, Hunter said.

"Everyone, from the school principals to the teachers to the police . . . everyone says there was no reason to harm Tom," he said.

Brad Waite of Omaha, one of Sherman's brothers, said detectives also looked into Sherman's background.

Police questioned several of her relatives and acquaintances, according to Waite, but detectives told him nothing had come of those interviews.

In recent months, detectives inquired about possible romances in Sherman's life, Waite said. But Sherman, who was divorced, had not dated for more than 10 years, he said.

Sherman's family asked for a meeting with Omaha police last week. They, too, want to see more attention put on the case and asked if there was more they could do.

"We're obviously discouraged," said Dan Waite, another of Sherman's brothers. "Shirlee didn't have any enemies."

With more questions than answers, the Hunters still struggle to come home to the house they have lived in for 25 years. Still, they have no intention of moving.

"Even though they desecrated the house we loved, I am not afraid of living there," Bill Hunter said. "We have a lot of good memories of the house and our neighborhood. What do we do? Just disappear?"

As they try to move forward, Hunter said, family, neighbors and colleagues are a source of strength.

Hunter said he thinks the homicide unit is doing everything possible to solve the slayings.

"I trust them. They've been very kind and supportive and done a good job," he said. "As each month goes by, it gets more frustrating. Obviously, we are desperately seeking closure. Maybe a motive would go a long way in closure. I don't want it to be just random, but I know things like that happen."

Hunter said he misses terribly the life he shared with his youngest son.

The parents no longer have their son's beloved pet rabbit, Mopsy. One of his classmates agreed to take the pet after Tom's death.

On Saturday mornings, Hunter liked to watch Tom shoot baskets in YMCA basketball games. Afterward, father and son often went to Arby's or another restaurant for lunch.

In 2007, Tom vacationed with his parents in Europe. Family snapshots capture Tom smiling with his mother in England at the Tower of London and standing outside Edinburgh Castle in Scotland.

In between homework and video games, Tom rifled through the family's pantry for snacks.

"He was a junk food junkie," his father said. "He loved Doritos and Froot Loops."

Gone are the days of Tom peppering his parents with questions about his homework. Science was his favorite subject.

"Our house was hopping all the time," Hunter said. "Now it's just quiet."

One thing sticks out new to me in that article:

Hunter liked to watch Tom shoot baskets in YMCA basketball games

The YMCA might be a place to check out further. Did Tom spend a lot of time there without his father?

If Tom got home at 3:30 and his father didn't get home until 5:45, the killer had a window of 2 hours and fifteen minutes. This is such a frustrating case because so little information has been released. Has there ever been an actual timeline posted on this case?

I, too, wish they would show the floorplan of the house and where the bodies were found.

YD, I don't recall us ever doing a timeline but we could sure work one up with the info we have from news media. It would take a lil bit of research but we could do it!

I find it informative to go back to thread one and re-read all the early news articles. It always seems to give me new theories and ideas in this case when I do so as I forget what I read long ago. There are some articles that I cannot retreive because all my bookmarks were wiped out.
