Stayton man gets 10 years in prison for abusing girlfriend's baby
A Stayton man was sentenced to 10 years and four months in prison Wednesday for physically abusing, disfiguring and withholding medical care from his girlfriend's 5-month-old baby.
Kevin Sergeant, 38, was convicted of first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment in September following a three-day bench trial before Marion County Judge Channing Bennett.

Sergeant and his girlfriend, Amy Chambers, 22, were arrested in January after Chamber's 5-month-old daughter was admitted to Santiam Hospital with serious injuries and burns.
After a police investigation, Chambers and Sergeant were arrested.
According to court records, Sergeant inflicted an "extremely painful burn to the victim that covered 10 percent of her body and required immediate medical attention" while Chambers was gone.
Bennett cited Sergeant's deliberate cruelty, his vulnerable victim and lack of remorse as a reason for the longer than typical sentence.
Chambers pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment in April.
In her plea petition, she admitted to withholding medical care from her daughter and leaving her "unattended at a place for a period of time that was likely to endanger (her) health and welfare."
Chambers sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 6.
