Court docs: Kit for untraceable gun bought before writer allegedly murdered chef husband
Friday, April 19th 2019
PORTLAND, Ore. — Investigators believe Nancy Crampton-Brophy, the author accused of murdering her husband, a beloved local chef, planned the murder for years and purchased an untraceable gun kit before his death.

Detectives believe Crampton-Brophy, 68, may have planned the shooting before she wrote and published a 2011 article entitled, "How to Murder Your Husband."

Those revelations and more came in 12 search warrant affidavits a Multnomah County judge unsealed Friday.

Investigators say Crampton-Brophy lied to them multiple times regarding where she was the morning her husband's body was found and about life insurance.

Court docs: Kit for untraceable gun bought before writer allegedly murdered chef husband

[...]
In the newly-unsealed court documents, detectives say they discovered Brophy and Crampton-Brophy shared a joint iTunes account and that someone on it had recently bookmarked an article entitled, “10 Ways to Cover Up a Murder.”

In the dozen search warrant affidavits KATU obtained, investigators say Crampton-Brophy told them she and her husband owned one gun, a 9-millimeter pistol, which she bought at a gun show in February 2018.

They say the two bullets that hit Brophy did not match that gun.

But investigators say they later discovered that in December 2017 Crampton-Brophy bought a kit online from GhostGuns.com to make a similar, untraceable version of the pistol. They also say she bought gun parts like a slide and barrel online and that the gun and accessories match the bullets that hit Brophy.

Brophy documents: Minivan ties mystery writer to murder
Apr 19, 2019 07:41 PM PDT
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) --- A Multnomah County judge unsealed records in the case against Nancy Brophy Friday, providing new information into a high-profile murder case.
[...]
On June 2, 2018, Daniel left home, got to work, disarmed the alarm at 7:21 a.m. and was the only person at the Oregon Culinary Institute.

Thirteen minutes before the alarm is disabled, Nancy is seen on surveillance video driving her Toyota minivan directly in front of OCI. At 7:28 a.m., Nancy is again seen leaving the area of OCI, both times headed west.

Documents revealed investigators found the surveillance video from nearby Bellagio's Pizza.

One of Daniel's co-workers arrived at 7:30 a.m., but didn't find his body in the rear kitchen until she let students come inside at 8 a.m.

Daniel was shot twice, once in the back and once in the chest. Both bullets -- likely from a Glock 9mm handgun -- pierced his heart and either could have been the fatal shot, the medical examiner said.

Investigators determined there was no sign of force or struggle, nor were there signs of robbery. Daniel still had all his personal items -- wallet, cell phone, glasses, car keys -- on his body.

Shortly after detectives arrived at the scene, Nancy Brophy also arrived in the same Toyota minivan. She said she had been home all morning and left when she got the call about an incident at OCI. She also said she couldn't think of anyone who would want to hurt him.

Romance Novelist Accused of Killing Husband Bookmarked ’10 Ways to Cover Up a Murder’ on iTunes

April 23, 2019

"On the morning of June 2, 2018, chef Dan Brophy, 63, was found fatally shot at the Oregon Culinary Institute, where the popular chef worked as an instructor.

Shortly after police arrived on the scene, Brophy’s wife Nancy Crampton-Brophy arrived. A romance novelist who sold life insurance policies, Crampton-Brophy told police she’d been in bed that morning when her husband left at about 7 a.m. to drive to work, and she’d come to the crime scene after a friend relayed she’d seen news reports about an incident at the school.

But, in newly released court documents obtained by PEOPLE, police allege she was lying — and that she was the killer....

According to the affidavit, police also discovered bookmarked on an iTunes account the couple shared an article titled: “10 ways to cover up a murder.”..."

They also claim police interviewed several witnesses in Texas in March and that one of those witnesses was scheduled to testify at the bail hearing. Wrongful death lawsuit against romance novelist is put on hold

Posted May 10, 2019

"Nancy Crampton Brophy, the romance novelist accused of murdering her husband at a Portland cooking school, will be allowed to sort out her criminal troubles before she has to deal with her financial ones.

A lawyer representing the estate of Crampton Brophy’s dead husband and a lawyer representing Crampton Brophy said Friday that a $1.7 million lawsuit filed against her will be put on hold so she can first focus on her criminal case....

No trial date has been scheduled yet, and it could be a year or more before a trial takes place.

In February, Nathaniel Stillwater filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of his father’s estate, against Crampton Brophy, who is his stepmother."

    Re-assigning case to Judge Ramras

Is it unusual to have yet another judge re-assigned on a case? I believe this is the third one and don't see a court date listed for trial.
