A camper discover the decomposing body Sunday, alongside a Forest Service Road. "There's not a campground," says Deschutes County Sheriff's Sergeant William Bailey, "You have a couple major Forest Roads that travel from Sunriver; one going up to, headed towards Mount Bachelor, another one headed up to the lakes, near Cultus Lake where it comes out on Century Drive. And so, in the summer time, we do see a lot of people recreating and camping in that area."

Investigators are working to determine if anyone in the area is missing, "We may have to expand that out into Oregon, and the pacific Northwest, in an effort to identify this person." The cause of death hasn't been determined, but Bailey says it's suspicious...

Authorities continue trying to identify the person, who was found on Deschutes National Forest land about 6 miles west of Sunriver along a forest road. The body was not that of a child and had likely been there weeks or months rather than days, Bailey said. The sheriff’s office was reviewing local missing person cases to check for any connection. Police searched the surrounding areas for evidence and found no other human remains.

"According to court records, Pagel had an address listed in Bend as of 2014. In court records from cases in 2000, he had addresses listed in both Dallas and Terrebonne. He was charged in 2014 with fourth-degree assault and harassment of another man in Baker County. A judge had issued a warrant for Pagel’s arrest in October 2014, the last court activity listed for that case...

According to the Source Weekly in Bend, Pagel had not been reported as a missing person.

Sgt. William Bailey said on Monday that a camper found the body while he was out walking his dog near the Wake Butte area, about six miles west of Sunriver. Bailey said the area is fairly heavily forested but has a few main roads that take people from Sunriver into the mountains and sees a lot of traffic in the summer."
