Found Deceased OR - Joshua McCoy, 5, Autism, goes by "Josh" or "Joshie", may not respond, missing when mom woke up frm nap at 5:30pm, Stage Rd, Hauser, 10 Nov 2024

It sounds like he was in a terrible environment and not being cared for properly, but I wanted to mention:
  • They also said Joshie was a picky eater and that AG "would typically feed them pizza, chicken nuggets, cookies, candy, marshmallows, dry cereal, and chocolate milk."
This is common with autistic children, who often have ARFID and many parents feed their children what might be considered a poor diet bacuse they will accept very limited food and the most important thing is to get enough calories into them (advice of dieticians). The rest is just so upsetting. I feel for Joshie.

German told police that she fell asleep about 1 p.m. on the last day she saw her son alive. She woke up four hours later to find the door open and ducks wandering in the home, the report said.

Police would later note that the home was filthy, with garbage, moldy food and duck feces throughout.
Oregon child welfare workers fielded extensive complaints about homelife of boy who died in woods

sentence two sounds as if it is meant to imply that the ducks weren't normally given free reign of the house and that they had only just done all that pooing because Joshie left the door open. Ducks for four hours inside would not leave a home "filthy with duck feces "throughout".

JMO those ducks regularly roamed the house. Super unsanitary.

correct. And dieticians that specialise in pediatrics, especially inclusive/special needs pediatrics, will work with this diet rather than trying to stop it. They will work out what nutrients they're getting already and then work out if there's stuff that can be added (including supplements) rather than taking any of it away. Feeding therapy is a very long, very slow process. You don't approach the diet of an autistic child with ARFID anything at all like you would a typical child.

not that I'm defending this case at all. Just parents dealing with ARFID generally.

Pizza, dry cereal, and chocolate milk, while not an ideal diet, could theoretically provide them with enough vitamins and minerals to stave off outright malnutrition. But was he OFFERED anything else?

I agree, ducks roaming the house for 4 hours would not create a health hazard.

Honestly, there are so many greater concerns than this child's diet - let's cut the judgment there.

I myself was a super picky eater as a kid and I'm sure my diet was less than healthy. That improved as I aged. I also had a child who would only eat about 6 or 7 foods and they now have a varied diet as an adult. This woman feeding her son chicken nuggets and chocolate milk was the least of the issues going on.
