Found Deceased OR - Joshua McCoy, 5, Autism, goes by "Josh" or "Joshie", may not respond, missing when mom woke up frm nap at 5:30pm, Stage Rd, Hauser, 10 Nov 2024

How would a child wander off, and turn up dead?
This was what everyone was expecting, at around this point or a little later, if the Mom was telling the truth, which it appears she was. He was out in the elements for 3 days with no water or food, and it was chilly. It appears he just didn't survive wandering off in to the woods with nothing at all to eat or drink. So incredibly sad.

From the media release ^
discovered the child had a cellphone, and a phone-ping of that phone was conducted. The information related to the phone-ping did not provide any fruitful information.

Several Deputies began a search of the property, while investigating the allegations of Joshua being picked up by a known family member which was later found not be factual.

I hadn’t heard that the boy had a cellphone. Was it his?? His mother’s? I find it unusual that a 5 y.o. would have a phone of his own, but you never know.

Also hadn’t heard the allegation the boy was picked up by a family member.
I hadn't heard those things either. This LE kept things exceptionally close to the vest, including where exactly this child disappeared from, and his family situation. At this point, it's all over except the grieving.

Godspeed, little Joshua.

I do SAR and wanted to pipe in for a minute about why some searches are not open for walk ups. Criminal activity is one of those reasons but also we search for clues and understand that we cannot touch anything at all. We are trained to stop everybody, call in the boss and whatever LEO we have on our team and wait for further directions. This can sometimes change the focus on an area. Every search I have been on has had somebody not trained for it and that’s fine. Sometimes they are family and we are also trained never to talk about the search with anybody, not even the person on our flanks for that reason. On a recent search we had a younger person out with us without training, very gung ho youngster but when we stepped off this person went the wrong way which honestly could cause many problems like a tainted crime scene or even using manpower to search for a searcher that doesn’t understand we are doing grid searches and not hiking the trails which was the case. Having too many people in the woods can hamper the results we are striving for and that’s a safe rescue or a recovery that needs collection of evidence for justice.
I hope this little guy is found safe, healthy, dry and warm
Thank you! for what you do.

And wet, which compounds cold.

I think this is a sad case of a child eloping, and that there wasn’t foul play involved.

Several years ago a pair of sisters wandered off in Benbow, but thankfully they were well trained on survival and knew to stay put once they realized they were lost. I don’t think this little guy had a chance.

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed>

Maybe it was just that the mother had hoped he had perhaps been picked up by a family member—when she was unable to locate him.

Similar case:
This may end up being so like the recent case of a 6 y.o. First Nations boy who wandered away from the schoolgrounds. He had autism, too. They did not find him in time, as he was found deceased, too.

I guess the clothing description is not the important when looking for a child in the woods. It is not like there will be others out there.
RIP Joshua James McCoy, such a great cowboy name.
I have to disagree with this completely. IMO, knowing what a person was last seen wearing when they go missing is often extremely important for many reasons. ESPECIALLY so in a case like Josh's. SAR should definitely know to be looking for specific clothing, with or without a person attached. Colors of clothing can also help with SAR, particularly if the person was wearing colors that would not blend in with the environment being searched. It can help determine in criminal cases that a victim likely died in the day they went missing or were otherwise incapable of changing clothing between going missing and being found, etc. There are also Unidentified Remains which are later found and clothing found on or nearby the remains could help identify them. I am not trained SAR or LE, but I've been reading at WS for over 20 years and I find "last seen wearing" data to be extremely important in missing cases, which is why it's the standard usually for any missing persons report. That said, If he died of hypothermia because it took 3 days and nights to find him, I imagine LEO would have made a different call about whether to have as many searchers in the area as possible. MOO
THIS. This was really bothering me before he was found. I completely understand in a criminal investigative sense why they would only want trained searchers out there to preserve evidence and proof of life passing through etc. But in this case, I do NOT agree with the call. It should have been anyone and everyone, and search every property and possible hiding space or place for shelter that a small child might crawl into. In this case the call should have been preserve life and find this child before he succumbs, rather than preserve possible evidence. It could have made the difference for Josh. Just my opinion.

There wasn't the big delay in reporting him missing, despite what was reported before. LE was on the scene at 6:47 after receiving a call. I'm just so sad for this loss. And oddly, it seems more difficult to me that there's no one to blame. It's just . . . loss.
Just a scenario if J woke at 3pm and escaped he could have been running for 2/3 hours before Mum even awoke! So yes a delay and yes so sad.
I have to say when mine were youngsters the slightest noise woke me up whether sleep deprived or not. Now they are teens nothing much disturbs me unless they are ill etc

My 4 yr old autistic granddaughter has her own phone. It's an old one her mum had and watching videos on it calms her so maybe not that unusual for a child with autism.

Right, but I was answering the question of "why was there such a delay" in reporting. There wasn't. Upthread, it was reported in an article that LE didn't arrive until late into the night, and that wasn't true. He was reported missing not long after Mom woke up and realized he was missing. Sounds like she did a brief search and then called for help.
