This is a family member of mine, and he has been missing since 2017. Here is the NAMUS page on him: Missing Person / NamUs #MP41337

As you can see, information on him is limited. He was with his wife, and they had an argument (according to his wife). He left their home drunk, without shoes, and without his wallet. Other family members believe he may have also been on drugs at the time (unconfirmed). There's a river near their apartment, so the most likely explanation is that he drunkenly stumbled into the river.

However, his body has not been found, and his wife (allegedly, this is family gossip) tried to file for his life insurance policy without trying to find him first or confirm his death. The policy was worth thousands of dollars, and that his wife didn't wait for an investigation to start before trying to get the money (again, allegedly). His mom had to fly to Portland and hire lawyers and investigators. I'm unsure if his wife was involved in the investigations or if she or her parents pitched in for it. I don't blame her (I don't know her, I can't in good conscience blame her for his disappearance), and I know grief can make people act in many different ways. His mom is suspicious of her because of the life insurance thing, but maybe she needed the money to pay their rent, I'm not sure.

I have reached out to the detective on the case and am yet to hear back.

I know a lot of this is hearsay and unconfirmed, but it's been 8 years and there's no updates. I'll try reaching out to his mom later today to see if there's more information that needs to be added on, or what the investigators found.

Thank you!

I'm so sorry to hear about this disappearance of your relative. I can't imagine not knowing anything for eight years!

I tried searching for more information about Juan online (like news articles, police bulletins, etc.), but the only thing I was able to find was this article from Facebook's For The Missing: Pacific Northwest, including a missing persons poster I've attached below.

I also feel that he likely fell into the surrounding water near his "floating home"(?) and just hasn't been found. But a spousal argument before a disappearance is always suspicious—especially when money and insurance policies are involved.

But one thing I've learned from other cases is that family members of missing persons often need to cash out insurance policies so they can cover the sudden costs of searching for their loved one. Printing flyers, driving to search locations, missing work, missing bill payments because now there's one less person bringing in money, etc—all of that can take a toll on anyone's finances.

I don't know if any of that is applicable here. And I would assume if the wife was granted the money, then some authority (whether the insurance company or a judge) didn't suspect her involvement. But this is all just speculation.

On another note, since you're related to Juan, you might want to consider becoming a Verified Insider on here. That way, anything you post (like family rumors, personal speculation, etc.) does not need to be supported by mainstream media.

Here's hoping that on here we can all find some answers!

I am in the process of getting verified! I've sent the emails, I'm just waiting to hear back from whoever verifies users.

I also do suspect that he did fall into the river as that is the most likely explanation. But I'll have to wait until I get verified to talk more about what my family thinks happened. I do agree on the spouse thing, though, and don't judge her for trying to take out the money from the life insurance policy.

Thank you for your reply!

Also, these are the "floating homes" mentioned in the NamUs page and in the Facebook poster above. MOORAGES

They look to be like regular homes, but on water. So like boat homes, but bigger.
