I'm still really curious how he got from Bend to Salem.
The media mentioned his car was found in Bend/Redmond a few blocks from his cousins.
Soooooo are we anticipating an accomplice arrest?

Same. It's what, about a two hours drive? How did he get to Salem and why?!? Certainly out of his way if he was thinking of heading to southern CA right?

So glad AM was not harmed. This could have been even worse. Two families could be grieving the loss of beautiful young women.

It will be interesting to see what the autopsy of beautiful Kaylee reveals, as far as types of injuries sustained and whether or not consistent with vehicular 'accident'

SALEM, Oregon (AP) - Kaylee Sawyer was walking alone in the middle of the night on the edge of the picturesque town of Bend, Oregon, after getting into an argument with her boyfriend.

Police believe she encountered Edwin Lara, a 31-year-old with an associate degree in criminal justice who was working as a security guard at a community college.

A body that resembles the 23-year-old Sawyer was found later but has not yet been positively identified. Lara was in the Tahama County Jail in California on Wednesday, a day after authorities say he shot a man at a motel in Yreka, California, and stole a car with a woman and her two sons inside.

Lara's wife, Isabel Ponce-Lara, went to police in their hometown of Redmond, Oregon, on Monday, crying uncontrollably and saying Lara had told her that he hit Sawyer with his patrol vehicle, killing her, then panicked and hid her body, according to documents filed in court.

After tearfully telling his story to her, Lara drove off, said his wife, a new Bend police officer who was worried that he was suicidal.

Police went to their home and found Sawyer's blood-soaked purse, bloody women's and men's clothing and other belongings in a shed, according to 62 pages of affidavits filed with the Deschutes County Circuit Court in Bend.
The officers said evidence showed Lara had committed crimes of vehicular homicide, assault and hit-and-run.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel isn't buying the story about Lara having accidentally run over Sawyer.

I don't believe it has been confirmed that he was on duty.

He was in one of the college's security patrol cars, so I'm guessing he was on duty.

I'm surprised they didn't confirm her identity yesterday. What would be the reason they haven't came out and said it was 100% her yet?

<mod snip>

Why, if he accidentally hit her with his car, was her bloody clothing found in his shed? Why would it be necessary to remove Kaylee's clothing?

here is a brainstorm. he met her earlier in bar and they know he was drinking. he hit her and she was still alive. he panicked and killed her. but idk about the clothes....

Sawyer was reported missing just after 7 p.m. Sunday. Her family said she was last seen 18 hours earlier at her apartment, near Central Oregon Community College. Her car was still in the parking lot, and her family said she had her phone but it was apparently turned off.

According to witnesses, Sawyer went out with friends for a bachelorette party Saturday night. She was picked up by her boyfriend, who drove them to their apartment.

Her boyfriend told police that they got into an argument during the drive. Once parked at the apartment complex, he went up to their second-story apartment and told her to come up “when she was ready.” He said he went back down to the car after 10 minutes and Sawyer was no longer there. The two exchanged calls and texts until Sawyer texted “Good bye” and turned her phone off at around 1 a.m. Sunday. Sawyer’s boyfriend said he drove around looking for her but couldn’t find her.

Apologies if this has been asked already, I'm wondering why he has been charged with murder, rather than vehicular homicide?

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel isn't buying the story about Lara having accidentally run over Sawyer.

Lara "did unlawfully and intentionally cause the death of Kaylee Anne Sawyer," the murder charge filed against him Tuesday reads.

Circuit Court Judge Alta Brady has prohibited all parties in the case, including attorneys and the district attorney's office, from publicly commenting on it.
Hummel told The Associated Press in an email that consequently he could not say what evidence led his office to charge Lara with murder instead of vehicular homicide.

But he added: "I can tell you that I would not file charges alleging a person intentionally killed a person if I did not have evidence to support the assertion."
