The story about the stepmother telling the teacher that Kyron had an appointment hasn't been confirmed, nor has the story about an email. But if that did happen, LE definitely knows about it and there would be an email as proof. The truth is, we have no clue as to what LE knows. I vacillate between thinking they know nothing or they know exactly what happened. I just have to have faith I guess. I live here and I want to beleive that we have a competent police force. When I see LE looking for Kyron I have to believe that they would look just as hard for my child if they went missing. There is a lot of pressure on them right now. The nation is watching. If they don't solve this then everyone will know. I guess what I am saying is that I am going to believe that this is solvable and LE knows exactly what they are doing.

I do believe the police force over this case is very competent and have handled this case with utmost professionalism.

However even the most competent police force in the world cannot solve a case unless they find evidence to solve it.

Only about 64% of crimes are ever solved.

I sincerely hope that this is not one of those cases though.

If the child was going to an appointment his jacket would not have been in the classroom.

Four out of five school days a week my son would come home without the hoodie or jacket he wore to school. I guess the difference was at school I wasn't there to yell, "Don't forget your coat!" When he'd run out of coats and hoodies I would have to pick them up, bring them home, wash and hang them up, then the cycle would start all over again.

DairyGirl, I'm not saying you are included, but do you have any idea why many of the locals are saying Kyron's case is getting too much attention? Just curious...

I haven't heard anything about that. If anything it isn't well know enough. I have talked to people that had no clue. I've only seen his missing poster one place out here (on the east side about 20 miles from the school). I can't imagine anyone complaining about overexposure with a missing child's case.

The teacher did nothing out of the ordinary. The school spokesperson made it quite clear that no checking up on absent students was done EVER, on ANY day of the school year. If they weren't there they were just marked absent, that's it, no followup ever. There have been statements from the school saying that it was common for students to leave early on days with activities. The teacher marked him absent at whatever time she took attendance that day. We know for a fact that would not be until sometime after the final bell at 8:45. Other than that everything is speculation.

Thanks to you JBean for keeping a potentially volatile thread from going up into an explosion! I appreciate all your efforts and hard work!

Thanks to BeanE for all your hard work in keeping rumors to a minimum.

Our two mods here are great and have maintained the 'victim' friendly atmosphere here at WS. I just love it when that happens! :blowkiss:

ETA: OMG - I didn't mean to forget Kimster - thanks Kimster for all that you do here at WS, and in dispelling rumors and keeping the radio thread going. :blowkiss:

Not sure if this is the case in OR...but here in our school district to be counted present a student must be at school until 10am. This could be why he was marked absent. The teacher seen him that morning, but when roll call was to be marked at 10am he was not there. She thought he had an appointment and that SM checked him out at the front office. If this were the case here in our district he would've been marked absent.
just putting in my thoughts on the marking of absent..

Hi Bernie40! Welcome to Websleuths!!!

Wanted also to check in with everyone. I heard some chit chat about this case from local people today and when I asked for back up, the information was incorrect and I sadly realized that we are moving to the embellishment stage. :(

I'm very thankful that on Websleuths we don't allow rumors. And thankful I was able to dispel the incorrect information because of what we are doing here. :grouphug:

Thanks you for the welcome, and, I get it! I will be more careful to only post the facts!!

Here's a link to The Oregonian that says it was updated less than 20 minutes ago:

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/06/kyron_horman_search_wraps_up_a.html

"The search for Kyron has become one of the largest in the state's history, with more than 1,300 people from across Oregon, Washington and Northern California fanning out over a two-mile radius around the school. The area is wooded, hilly and filled with fields of tall grass. "<snipped>

All of Oregon wants to find Kyron. It is overwhelming here. EVERYONE knows about him.

Where are you Kyron?

First thing (and only thing for a while) I would do if my child, my stepchild, my friend's child, my sibling's child, my hubby's sibling's child, my neighbor's child, my community's child, etc. disappeared... would be to EXCLUDE MYSELF, SEARCH, LOOK, LISTEN, SLEUTH. Anything before neighbor (I don't know my neighbors very much) would result in my normal activities going down the drain. No Gym, no Working out, No normalcy. I don't care what anyone says. My stomach would not permit eating like normal, let alone exerting energy.

I think we all think we would do the same way but I do believe Schultz and his FBI assistant who has worked with the family got them to understand this is what they must do to endure this trauma for the long haul.

I imagine the FBI who helped Schultz talk to the family has a degree in psychology and in depth knowledge about family grief when it comes to a missing child. Even the advocate sites set up for parents with missing children recommend the same thing that LE has recommended to this family.

I would think I would do the same as you say but if the professionals came to me and explained clearly why I must do this to keep my body healthy and my mind sane for my child then I would most likely follow their knowledgeable advice.

Schultz said all of the family balked and did not want to do as they ask them to do but finally I think with patience they convinced them this was best.

OH NO! I wasn't talking directly to you! I was trying to give KUDOS to everyone here about that. :blushing:

To anyone in the greater Portland area, on KOIN's 11pm News tonight they will tel where we can go to get Help Find Kyron T-shirts. They are giving them out to the general public !!!

Tonight I drove to downtown Portland and as I passed under the Sylvan bridge I looked up to see a huge Help Find Kyron sign overhead. xox

The talent show: I'm thinking this was the older students preforming in the talent show and the younger ones watching. My kids never had/have talent shows in lower grades. In our intermediate 5-6 and middle 7-8 schools they do.

Hello everyone. This is my first post. I have lurked for years but never contributed. However, I have a 2nd grader and volunteer in the office of her school. I am always amazed at the school secretary, who seems to know all the kids so well. On busy days, we do hand out badges without parents signing in. Which does scare me now that we know that Kyron is missing from school. But I do think the teacher had to have a reason for accepting that he was at school earlier to deliver his science project and then not be alarmed when he wasnt there for attendance. I asked my daughter today if attendance was taken throughout the day and she said her teacher always did a head count whenever they went to lunch, pe, or left her room for any reason.

Did anyone else get a chance to look at the points of interest map? Anyone familiar with what appears to be a boat landing? It is close the Suavie Island, no?

"As the operation ratcheted back, about 210 searchers went out Sunday, many of them spotted at Sauvie Island again. They were on foot and on horses; some were delivered to the island by TriMet buses.

At the base camp, Linn County Deputy Sheriff Joe Larsen said he and a team of four deputies and 14 high school volunteers from Albany arrived Saturday and took part in three separate search assignments, through steep terrain, underbrush and blackberry bushes.

I understand someone asking them to, but I have to say that there have been times when I have been so upset that I cannot eat, sleep, think, workout, etc. I know others that are able to cope and function at the same time! So confusing!

On KOIN's website, the survey on front indicates that almost 50% of those voting think this story is getting too much coverage, that is why the poster asked the question, I believe.

As far as the FBI or LE telling the family it was better to go about their normal routines, for health, etc...this may well be true, but I feel they were forced to acknowledge this in public as a result of the fact that the SM, at least, sounded at times to some people as though she was already doing that very early on. So they felt the need to address it. JMO as to why they brought this up. This is always advised at some point with a missing child, but I think probably much later on that 3 days or so. Again, JMO.
