I can't believe he wasn't noticed missing. I don't understand. From 8:45 ish, to 3:45, school looked for him but LE didn't start search till 5 ish, thats 9 hours.

From what I understand, they DID notice he was not at school. They just thought he left with his step-mom. They had no reason to search for him at that point. And, unfortunately, the school does not have a system in place to notify parents if students are absent. But yes, Kyron was missing a long time before any official search began. :(

No one at the school looked for him, they did not know he was missing until the step mom called the school when he did not get off of the bus.

I know. I'm just shocked and scared that this can happen. I'm about to have my oldest go to kindergarten. It baffles me that the school didn't call home.

At my school that my son will be going, on a regular day you are suppose to drop them at the office, and someone will escort him to class. Again on regular days no one is allowed in the halls, unless they have visitors badge.
I'm thinking of testing this out.

I guess its time for them to get a system. 20 years ago in my school we had that system.

Yes but I wonder why they thought he had just left with her. Didn't they have classes that day too? If he wasn't sick what would be his excuse to not attend?

Elem school kids often "check out" after programs or special events at schools.

Where is this press conference being held? I am assuming the reason it's not outside because of the rain? Almost looks like a church or something.

I don't understand. They just don't have school?

Yes, school is held, there are classes.

But, in my experience, after elem school programs or special events, you will see a long line at the office of moms and dads "checking their kid out" of school for the day. In our school system, roll is called before any event.
Then, after the event, if you want to bring your child home, you have to sign a "check out" sheet. Some parents forget and have to be called after the roll is called again when class resumes. Just to make sure the parents have the child.

This was not that way at this school, but I'm sure a lot of kids leave with their parents after special events or programs.

I wonder if any other kids "checked out" before the 10am classes started.

I would be willing to bet there were, but that's just my opinion from my own life experience.

Thank you. I have never heard of this. Its actually surprising, but I guess since school is almost out, tons of days are like this.

I don't understand. For what reason would they check out their child instead of the child attending classes along with everyone else?

eta: okay, i can think of one. the family is leaving for vacation

I've never seen one in a church before.....

That is why I thought it odd. If anywhere would hold a press conference in a church, I would think it would be Utah...and I don't even recall Utah doing it.

But, it's in a church... must be the closest available building that can fit everyone or something.

Yes keep, a lot of days at the end of the year are like this IMO.

Happens all the time annalyzer. Don't know what else to say about it really.
ETA: In my experience, not much "work" happens on special days anyway. And kids want to go home with their parents.

Here's how it's being reported at OregonLive:

It was unclear when the boy was reported absent. Robb Cowie, Portland Public Schools communications director, said school officials were asked by law enforcement not to comment on any details because it might impede the investigation. He said not all elementary schools use the automated call system that notifies parents when children are marked absent. He did not know whether Skyline used it.

Witnesses said Kyron arrived at the school with his stepmother, Terri Moulton Horman, on Friday morning, perhaps about 8 a.m. Parents had been invited to attend Skyline's annual schoolwide science fair, an event scheduled for 8 to 10 a.m., according to the PTA.

The stepmother said she last saw Kyron at about 8:45 a.m. walking down the hallway toward his classroom, according to a sheriff's office news release.

It was not clear, however, whether Kyron, like every other student in the school, then participated in a classroom-to-classroom inspection of other science projects.

Parent-led groups of about four students walked among the classrooms, said Gina Zimmerman, president of the Skyline PTA.

"You were supposed to stay with your group," Zimmerman said. "I don't know what group he was in."

However, the sheriff's office news release says school staff did not see Kyron after 8:45 a.m. and that he did not make it to his classroom.

Terri Horman called 9-1-1 about 3:45 p.m. Friday to report Kyron missing after he failed to return home at his usual time on the school bus.

Zimmerman could not believe Kyron would have just walked off the school grounds on his own.

"He's not the type of child who would just go out of school and go wandering around," said Zimmerman, whose 8-year-old daughter, Madi, is in Kyron's class and has known the boy for three years.

Their mikes are on and they don't know it. They were just talking about Terri and her saying that she would explain everything later, that the media reports are wrong.

They said that she wants to tell her side of the story.

I just find it disgusting how they are joking and laughing with their mikes on.
