OR - Leah Freeman, 15, found murdered, Coquille, 28 June 2000

I've been through most of this thread but not all of it.

Forgive me if it's been asked and answered before.

What is NM up to now? Is he married? What does he do for a living? Has he been in trouble since the murder?

TIA...

Many lovely young girls have been fooled by handsome, but nasty and predatory older guys, whilst a good Mom like yourself, can only stand by helplessly and hope for the best.
I think your daughter was on the verge of realizing her youthful affections were misplaced and tragically( it would seem) so did someone else.

I was impressed that so many crime experts have stepped forward to help and also for the show 20/20 for airing this story.Hopefully you and Leah, will finally see justice done and perhaps help many others in the process.

This link gives NM's father's account of what he's been doing.

I think I read that he's got a child but is not married at this time??? Not sure on that though. He is currently in jail awaiting trial, right? I haven't heard that he was released.

What would be the reason to harm her? Last night on 20/20 they said that Leah though that she was pregnant but would that have been the motive to end her life? or was it for some other reason?

Oh, to know what transpired when NM picked her up! I'm wondering if she was upset with people not wanting them to be together and possibly was trying to get him to stop doing something to change him? That sounds so typical of ME when I was that age, so that's why I'm speculating. He may have been tense from meth and a mixture of other drugs that night and snapped. It sounds to me like his behavior with others later in the night is similar to someone who is full of adrenaline due to meth or other drugs. JMO because I wasn't there, but that's kinda what I was wondering as I watched the show.

First of all Cory, my heart really goes out to you. Words can't express my sorrow for you losing a daughter. One thing that is very important is that The Vidocq Society worked on Leah's case. What a great honor to have these people working on a case. I have never heard of them, but when I watched the story I was so amazed. Nick can really put an act on. I am sure that with Leah's soft heart, that she fell for it too. I enjoyed watching him crying and squirming. He really thought that he got away with it, and for a while he did. I know that you will be delighted to see your daughter's killer put away. I know that doesn't bring back Leah, but I am sure that she had a hand in this matter.

The show didn't mention Brent Bartley either.
According to articles, he was found "deceptive" on a poly.

OMG I am still in shock from this. :banghead: Cold cold cold cold.

His tears, IMO, were for himself and his family, "I can't believe I got caught" moment.

I think he looked like he had been beaten, or worse, in jail. jmo of course.

Cory, you mentioned somewhere about a story NM told you about an abduction. I can't find it anymore. Can you elaborate on when he told you this.
I guess we will have to wait until May to see what the new evidence is? This LE department has not publicized much at all. I guess that is good.
I am surprised at the small amount of information that has come out in all of these year. I find it amazing that you still do not know the cause, what she was wearing, and any thing else.
Good luck to you.

I just watched the show tonight on TIVO and it was heartbreaking but also very well-done, I thought. I am glad the town kept leah's memory alive all these years and did not let the case just "go away".

I have read about the Vidocq Society over the years, I recall a case they worked on in TX among other. I made a note to reserve the book Murder Room that they referred to, at my library.

I hope the prosecutor puts together his case well and that the conviction is secured. It is a shame they could not get DNA but they should still be able to present a solid case.

All my sympathies to Leah's mom and her friends and family members...hope some peace comes your way soon.

Am I the only person that kinda thinks this guy is innocent? I really didnt see much hard evidence. Or was I not paying attention enough??

Fellow inmate slugs McGuffin

"The man accused of killing 15-year-old Leah Freeman more than a decade ago took a beating earlier this month at the hands of a fellow inmate.

According to Coos County Sheriff's Sgt. Pat Downing, Nicholas McGuffin was injured in the Dec. 12 scuffle in the day room of his jail pod at the Coos County jail.
Downing said another inmate in the same jail pod walked by McGuffin, punched him in the back of the head and continued attacking the murder suspect...."

burbqueen--FWIW, I'm not totally convinced either. Lots of questions.

Good for him. Not the first beating he's got and certainly not the last.

And why is it you think this?? Do you not think it is strange that he LIED about not seeing Leah AFTER 9:00 pm on June 28th?? Do you not think it is strange that he failed his poly?? Do you not think it is strange that he was with another girl the very night Leah "went missing"?? (and the many girlfriends he had shortly after Leah disappeared) Do you not think it is strange that he LIED about coming to my house to see if Leah was there??? Why didn't he knock at the door or ring the bell if he was there?? (because he wasn't - obviously he was way too busy with little miss Kristen) Why did he tell people he was down at Johnson Mill Pond "smoking pot" when in fact it was actually METH he was doing? There is more but I think you get my drift.

Obviously you were NOT paying enough attention.

Is there a reason why it took them 10 years to finally arrest Nick?

I'm surprised he didn't leave Oregon after Leah turned up missing. I guess he though he was not a suspect.
