Missed ya all. Hard drive crash could not get in!! I dont know where ya all are so some ot this may have been posted. But once again the media is just the media.

-- according to this peice, they hit him nwith a shot he ran then shot himself.
Why cant the media just clear it up ?

I thought this peice as really good .Just MOO!

he regularly went to a shooting range with his mother,

........where the two lived until moving to Oregon in 2013. At a barbecue shortly before they left, Mr. Harper-Mercer spent hours talking with a next-door neighbor about guns and how he and his mother were excited to leave Los Angeles and get a fresh start.

“When we talked about guns and hunting, he was real open about it,”

angry at not having a girlfriend and bitter at a world that he believed was working against him.

Just this week, on Tuesday, using the handle lithium_love,( the only only mental illiness lithium was used for was bipolar) - it helped many but required blood draws often

he commented on a post titled “How many girlfriends have you had?” by saying “0. Never had anyone.” When pressed further by another user, he responded “Well, it means I’ve never been with anyone, no woman nor man (nor dog or animal or any other).” Then, on Wednesday, responding to a comment that he “must be saving himself for someone special,” he said, “Involuntarily so.” It was a day before the killings.

“. “It’s clear he was in a very bad state of mind.”

He retreated to online message boards to express his thoughts about commercialism,

After his parents divorced when he was about 16, he lived with his mother, Laurel Harper, a nurse who fiercely protected him from, among other things, the neighborhood sounds of loud children and barking dogs.
.....
neighbors said, she went door to door with a petition to get the landlord to exterminate cockroaches in her apartment, saying they bothered her son. _( very typical with some of the learning disabled - had one pt that the only thing the mom could feed him was pizza - peroid - he lost it when anything else was presented)

“She said, ‘My son is dealing with some mental issues, and the roaches are really irritating him...... “She said they were going to go stay in a motel.

He was listed as a 2009 graduate of the Switzer Learning Center in Torrance, a private school for students with learning disabilities, emotional issues and other special-education needs.

Rosario Lucumi, 51, rode the same bus in Torrance as the young man when she went to work. She said he always wore earphones and listened to music on the rides.

he and his mother lived for less than a year in a small one-bedroom apartment in Torrance. “They were always together,” she said.

His parents struggled financially over the years, filing for bankruptcy in 1992, and his father, Ian Mercer, filed again in 2002. California records show that Ms. Harper had been a licensed vocational nurse.

She apparently contributed to online forums dealing with health issues. In one exchange, a writer who appeared to be Ms. Harper offered assistance to the mother of a child with Asperger’s syndrome, saying, “I’m a nurse and also have an Aspergers kid.” s.

he enjoyed horror movies, and under hobbies, it listed “killing zombies” along with the “Internet” and other pursuits.

The profile described Mr. Harper-Mercer as “Not Religious, Not Religious, but Spiritual,” and it said he belonged to a group called “Doesn’t Like Organized Religion.”

............ in September, after the shooting death of Darren Goforth, a suburban Houston police officer, at a gas .... “In case anyone’s wondering, I’m not on the side of the suspect, I’m on the side of the officer, and generally don’t agree with the black lives matter protests,”
lithium_love, shared 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬, as well as movies like “Illuminati Secrets” and “UFO Secrets of the Third Reich.”

a neighbor from Torrance, said he once asked Mr. Harper-Mercer why he wore “a military get-up” every day. “He kind of just didn’t want to talk about it” and changed the subject, Mr. Clay said.

...... another former neighbor, said Mr. Harper-Mercer was so timid and ill at ease that on occasion Mr. McClendon would ask him if something was wrong.

“I would say, ‘Hey, man, you all right?’ ” Mr. McClendon said. “He would say, ‘Hi,’ but that’s it. He was really shy.”

........ moved into the apartment that the mother and son shared when the two moved from Torrance a couple of years ago. She said that the two “kept to themselves,.....

....” but that from time to time Mr. Harper-Mercer’s mother would complain that Ms. Espinoza’s young children were playing too loudly and bothering her son.

“They’re normal children that play, but she would get really upset,” Ms. Espinoza said. “It was during the daytime. But I guess the noise would really upset him, the son.”

“He said: ‘Can you turn that down? Your TV is really loud,” Esther Flores said. “And he just had that look. No smile, nothing. And he just turned and walked away. My husband didn’t even have a chance to respond.”

“She would wait till they got home and knock on their door ............

...... a neighbor who said she lived in an apartment below Mr. Harper-Mercer’s, described a more assertive young man than his former neighbors in California did. Far from avoiding social interaction, she said, he frequently shouted at her for smoking on her balcony.

“He yelled at us, me and my husband,” said Ms. Hart, who lives with her husband and father. “He was not a friendly type of guy. He did not want anything to do with anyone.”

......... a law enforcement official said...... He was able to run away and then shot himself. He died in the ambulance en route to the hospital. It was not clear which shot was the fatal one.

Costly
Metal detectors are costly to purchase and install, and they require other related expenditures such as staff to conduct the searches, training and equipment maintenance, according to a National Institute of Justice Research Report. The purchase price for a metal detector may run up to tens of thousands of dollars. Detectors are also not self-operating because although the equipment produces some type of alarm signal, a trained officer is still required to investigate the source of the alert and to verify whether it is a weapon or other object. As a result, the school has to hire and train numerous officers to check students as they arrive.

OK, so who is going to pay? UCC had already rejected the idea of having armed security guards, because they couldn't afford it. So how are they going to pay all of this equipment, plus numerous officers to check the students?

There have been several warnings to stay on topic. In case folks have forgotten, the topic is this shooting incident at the college.
If the broader gun debate continues you risk this thread being closed for admin review. I don't think anyone wants that. Keep this train on the tracks please.

Understanding & totally agreeing - this thread is not the place for gun/gun control debate, just jumping off your post.

On this & other threads, some ppl posted they do not see media coverage on non-LEOs shooting in defense of selves or others. Maybe depends on which media we follow, but I frequently see such articles.

Is there a place for this topic - where we can link? In private forums? Thx in adv.

I don't know the answer, it was a just a suggestion. Who pays for Homeland Security? It's the same as air travel, since 9/11, the airports security is ridiculously high, yet people still pay to travel. The school boards and taxpayers may have to pay (which no ones wants), but, maybe eventually it would be part of the norm in 10+ years.

I have to wonder if their sudden move to Oregon had anything to do with more restrictive gun possession and open carry laws in CA vs OR. I don't have time today to research the laws for each state on the guns the killer's irresponsible mother listed, but if someone else feels like it, we might gain some insight. TIA.

His mother's LPN license was issued 11/30/2012 in Oregon and renewed this past February. Her last job in California appears to be in Feb 2013.

There was a guard but he wasn't armed. I think he may have had been allowed to carry mace, but can't find the link again anywhere. Mace.

At my son's college (a community college) they had a shooter a couple years ago. The guard had no gun. The guy walks in and shoots two women off the bat. He goes from room to room and people are hiding. One was a friend of my son's. She and another student heard what was going on and they hid. The guy comes in the room and says "I know you are in here, I can hear you" at that point she was scared out of her mind as can be understood. The guy walks out and then comes back in and said "Come out I know you are in here". Luckily they didn't come out. My son didn't have class that day.

My son's friend was tramatized and he said she told him she was having trouble sleeping and everytime he tried to talk to her she would be crying terribly. He did what he could to try to help her. She refused. She was a lovely girl and I could tell this was really bothering him.

Imagine the horror I felt when I was reading the paper months later and seen where she had died. I found out she had taken her own life. I had to tell my son and that was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. We had just seen her a week before this happened at her place of work. Irontically I heard she had used a gun. My son has been hurt deeply by all this. He just mentioned her yesterday. She was special to him. I know this is not directly related but the same type story. Mentally ill person. The shooter got a sentence of 38 years.

First time I've read this. He didn't have any particular religious bent. He simply was deranged. JMO

However, conflicting reports emerged about Harper-Mercer's words as he shot his victims.

Stephanie Salas, the mother of Rand McGowan, another student who survived, said she was told by her son that the shooter asked victims whether they were religious but did not specifically target Christians.

Her son said the shooter had people stand up before asking, "'Do you have a God? Are you Christian? Do you have a religion?'"
Salas said it was like telling the victims "you're going to be meeting your maker."

Salas said the gunman told victims "'this won't hurt very long'" before shooting them.

You realize that the Columbine shooting started at 11:30 in the morning (and lasted less than 20 minutes).

It took the authorities (police and EMS) over three hours to enter the building. By that time many of the wounded had bled out.

After Columbine, schools were required by law to have lockdown practice 6 times a year.

le and emergency responders have practice for what should be done.

We live in a state of seige nowadays. Ready to deal with this issue. Special to live, this way

Thank you, wgram. Very sad, and while not directly related, it is germane to the subject at hand. The dead and wounded were not the only victims at Umpqua. Everyone on campus that day, and to some extent, even members of the college community who weren't present, also are in need of support and understanding. Relating stories such as the tragic tale you've posted aids in creating awareness of what can be expected in the aftermath.

One of the Columbine shooters asked a similar question in the library- do you believe in God? Not exactly the same as asking a potential victim whether he/she is a Christian but there is somewhat of commonality, especially since the perp studied past mass killers.

I hope this is okay to post. (Obviously, I won't post the link)

Chris Mintz's cousin opened a 🤬🤬🤬 page to help him with medical bills and it has reached almost 700,000 in 24 hours.

The comments have me in tears.
