Found Deceased OR - Owen Klinger, 18, University of Portland, 6 Oct 2019

LaCrosse is a club sport at U of P. It's not one of the sports teams, like soccer or basketball. That may be why you are perceiving a difference in the outward response. I think there was a team at one point, but it's not listed any longer www.portlandpilots.com.
So do Club sports drug test?

Thanks for the information about Amtrak.

One case that came to mind was of a (formerly) pet case of mine - Pat Collins, a missing graduate student. They determined that he had called up Amtrak reservations but never made one, and many decades passed without much progress. It turned out he had taken Amtrak to a remote location in New York State and killed himself; his remains were only recently identified. Besides the proximity to Amtrak, his father on Live PD tonight mentioned that he didn't take his large backpack with him - and Collins was found with a "ditty bag" which is a small backpack and contained basically enough to get him to his destination, and the drugs he used to kill himself.

BBM:

Wow, thanks for sharing that, Paul.

I was not at all familiar with the Collins case...IF we're looking at a similar scenario here, i.e., intent to self-harm, at least some of the money OK withdrew from the ATM might have been intended to procure drugs or whatever he needed for his chosen means.

JMO.

It's relevant.

JMO.
Mid Terms are relevant. Both in stress and action. If I had a mid term next day I would not go to a lacrosse meeting after 6pm let alone after 8pm

Alright, point taken. :)

As I said, I mainly wonder if Lacrosse is significant in his disappearance because of the fact that he was evasive with his roommates about going to practice and then skipped it. And now he’s gone.

I think it was just a plausible reason for him to give to his roommate on why he was leaving (since there was apparently practice that night.) The pack he was taking with him would make sense to the roommate - he'd need his uniform and gear.

As an aside, I think the drug talk may be off-limits since it is implying that Klinger could be using illegal drugs and there is, as far as I know, nothing in MSM that states this.

Obviously I have no idea, but my guess is he used that as a decoy for his roommates, for whatever reason he didn't want to tell them where he was really going. I'm assuming the LaCrosse meeting was somewhere on campus, and not in the direction he was walking, but don't know for sure.

Tragic. Thanks for posting this, Paul. The secrecy and planning are so sad. It's as if Pat wanted to completely erase himself.

Lilibet, I am also increasingly worried about self harm because of the timing here. The night before the beginning of midterms. :(

Agreed. And the length of time missing is now very concerning. I don't think this was a quick vacation.

I agree it was probably just a logical excuse he gave his roommates.

I don’t know if you were talking to me, but I haven’t mentioned anything about drugs. I also think it’s probably off limits at this point.

Thanks to the member that said that lacrosse at UP is more of a club sport and not like an NCAA or PAC12 team! That makes me understand this better and it also has me thinking missing a practice isn’t as big of a deal if you’d rather spend the time studying. I also wanted to remind those that may not be aware that when Owen’s parents mentioned in their interview that Owen had vaped marijuana at school, that marijuana is legal in Oregon and there are stores in our State where you can easily purchase it all over. I’m thinking maybe people didn’t realize this. I’m really concerned with the numbers of days missing and no one seeing him anywhere.

Former recent club athlete here. It depends on the school, sport and league they’re participating in. I did club swim and field hockey... swim was very stringent about doping and drug tests because they were affiliated with US Masters Swimming/USA Swimming who has a hardline anti doping stance. Field hockey team could care less and I never saw a drug test at all during all my years playing. A lot of the girls on my team did take advantage of that and experimented with harder stuff than our varsity team. My school did not enforce drug testing at the club level fwiw.

One reason Owen might have used the existing lacrosse practice as a reason for leaving to his roommates is that whatever he was setting out to do had a specific time attached to it that overlapped with lacrosse practice, making it the perfect cover up. Ie he arranged to meet someone at 8:15 pm. This would also provide a reason for him skipping practice outside of him having issues with the team/coach: he had arranged to do something at that hour that he considered to be more important/interesting but that he wanted to keep secret

Yes Pot is legal but there's a no drug policy with all sports unless they changed the rules I'm not aware of.

I think it's safe to say that until we get to the bottom of the unknown group message we will have to wait and see. I would think the group message was with the team and maybe an explanation as to why he would not make the practice or meet up. On the contrary, it could confirm his intention of making it there. Need more info...

If midterms were the next day, is it even reasonable to have had a lacrosse practice or meeting? I wouldn’t go to practice either , unless harsh consequences would follow.

What would the cost to actually ride amtrak be? For a ticket? Wonder if he hopped on for an intended free ride and had that money just in case he was caught and would then just pay the fare so as not to get in trouble??? But he wanted to free ride so nobody could track his movements.

Has anyone found his Venmo account? Would be helpful to take a peek there.

Checking Amtrak's web site - can be as low as $35 for a ticket to Seattle, $64 to Bend Oregon, $135 to San Diego.

He still lied about where he was going, and he is under-aged for marijuana use (he was 18, needed to be 21, as if that stops any kid wanting to use) even though it's legal in Oregon.
