Press conference 10:00 10/19
Good morning...Jim Vaughn is not here because he's asked to be excused, so he's not going to be here today.
First of all some updates from yesterday: the cell phone was found. We found Whitney's cell phone 701 SW 257 Troutdale Terrace Apts . Call came in at 5:24. Children were playing in a field near the apt complex, found the phone, called police and detectives were called out there.
The phone is a smartphone we can do DNA analysis, and the phone can tell us where we can search.
It's a key area between Stark and 257 and Walmart in Sandy so this is right between those areas.
Larch Mtn search is continuing today, we hope to finish mid-day today, but that's subject to change.
This investigation has been treated as a criminal investigation from the start, from the moment we heard about this. It's more prudent to treat it like a criminal investigation and find out it wasn't. We've been taken those steps from the beginning.
(I can't hear the questions)
Q:
A: Yes, we believe that was Whitney's cellphone
Q:
A: We certainly are going to try, obviously some of that evidence could have been damaged.
Q:
A: I didn't go out there, but it was described as a large field area with a network of walking trails. It's adjacent to a fairly large apt complex. They will return and they may find some more
Q:
A: I don't know if we're there exactly now, we may be here right now as we speak.
Q:
A: I don't want to disclose what we've learned from the surveillance.
Q:
A: It's going to be a long time before we go through that. Just Walmart itself has several cameras.
Q:
A: In terms of individual items, other than the phone, we've collected a lot of items, but I don't want to disclose what they were.
Q:
A: Everything we've collected is part of the investigation, yes.
Q:
A: You're asking me to...based on what you've heard Clint say, we haven't seen any video that would be useful to our investigation to release.
Q:
A: At this point there is no person of interest.
Q:
A: No, I don't believe so, but I don't know that for sure.
Q:
A: She left the house at 6:45 and he was there. There were separate, no.
Q:
A: All the same, it was there yesterday, will be there today.
Q:
A: The same feeling you all have, she's been missing for 2 or 3 hours, there are lots of possible logical explanations, so the longer the time goes by and we don't hear from her, certainly more concerning.
Q:
A: with every briefing we have that number goes up. We've had 50 (tips) over night, just over night. that's been very busy and active.
Q:
A: I don't know, I know that the afternoon press-conference there was 21, plus 20 that day so over 40 for sure and 50 overnight.
Q:
A: We vet them against some of the info we already have and if it looks promising we prioritize it. If it's something off-the-wall, we lower it, but we still investigate it.
Q:
A: Lots of agencies involved. Multnomah and Clackamas county, OSP, air support, a pretty large team. We were here until, I left here at 10:00 and here at 6:00. We have people working 16,17 hours straight.
Q:
A: Yesterday we had 10 SAR plus detectives. The SAR people are all volunteers so it depends on their work schedule.
Q:
A: I don't believe so, but I'm not sure about that because the weather isn't as good as yesterday.
Q:
A: No stranger-on-stranger crimes are still rare today.
Q:
A: We knew the cell-phone ended up there, but we had good reason to believe the vehicle had been in a plethora of locations.
Q:
A: Tuesday night, what is today Friday? I don't believe we were there Tuesday, I think we were at Dodge park on Tues. Did it start on Tuesday? I'm sorry. Was Tuesday the 16th? That's the day this came to us, we were not there on Tues.
Q:
A: No because we had reason to believe her vehicle had been in those locations. I'm not going to disclose that part.
Q:
A: I may try calling them, that's a good question.
Q:
A: I personally don't know, only because if we've run that, we may have already run that and I haven't been privy to it. Probably at this point we have, but I really don't know.
Q:
A: Yes, everybody is cooperating
Q:
A: Yes, I think we put that out, I want to say on Tuesday, there are some hours that we believe that to be true, I want to say 9-11 it was prior to 9:14, Shell was at 9:14, it was prior to that.
Q:
A: I'd have to refer to the previous thing I put out
Q:
A: I am pretty certain we said the vehicle was east of Gresham during 6-11 something, if I remember right, if you check the previous press release there was something in there about that.
Q:
A: At this point nobody has been totally cleared, but if you are asking if he's a suspect: no.
Q:
A: You know, going back to what I said before. The longer she's gone, the more this is concerning to us. As far on what evidence we have in particular, I'm not going to comment on that. But the longer she's gone the more concerning. There aren't logical explanations for being gone this long.
Q:
A: That's a good question. We're talking hours and hours of man-power. For example the cell phone was found and it jumps up in priority. There is a lot of dead time in video to find what might be a nugget. We know we have a nugget with that phone.
Q:
A: It was something like that. The person did see some text messages that further confirmed it was Whitney's phone.
Q:
A: We didn't go that far into it. That's part of the analysis that may be happening as we speak.
Q:
A: I heard it mentioned, but I don't remember. That might be a question for Jim.
Q:
A: I would like to tell you right now, I would like to have told you yesterday, but until we have that answer we're going to keep charging forward until we can do that.
Q:
A: Obviously if everything was in one room it would be easier than spread out into more counties. That's why other agencies have jumped in to help. But yeah, that's a challenge.
Also one more thing I want to mention. These press briefings we schedule for 10 and 4, we are going to stick to that schedule unless there is something breaking. Last night the pages blew up when the cell-phone was found. So I ask you to respect the 10 and 4 schedule. If it's something huge, I'm gonna call you guys, but something like a cell-phone we'll tell you at the briefings. We'll find out if we continue on the weekend. But we're going to continue to work for sure.
Q:
A: The tips have been great, they've been useful. The publicity is useful. There is no tip that is useless. We don't know that, it may be it's something we didn't need, but until we have that and check it out, we don't know that.
Q:
A: Haven't been able to confirm that yet.
Q:
A: I'm not sure what you are talking about what her husband said. We're getting the bank records through the court process. It's what we are required to do.
Q:
A: I'm not going to talk about how we found what we found.
We are done for this morning. The other thing I also wanted to let you know. I'll do a summary of the points I put out. If you have a clarification about a time, feel free to email me. Next briefing at 4:00 unless you hear something different.
