Here's anonther link on Oxycodne & Addiction:
Oxycodone Addiction
<snipped>
Oxycodone is a strong opioid analgeic (pain killer) drug with a high potential to cause physical and psychological dependence. Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid made from the alkaloid, thebaine. It is very similar to codeine in structure and actions.The agent has been around for more than 70 years in Europe but because of the addiction and abuse potential, the drug never became popular until the late 1980s. Once the addictive problems of heroin and morphine became well known, it was decided not to make pain killers using morphine substitutes.
The preparation of hydrocodone from thebaine was done to avoid the mood altering effects that were common with morphine and heroin. Oxycodone, like morphine, acts on the brain but does not show the full spectrum of mood altering effects seen with morphine or heroin, nor are the effects long lasting. However, the drug does have some euphoric effects, lessens anxiety and gives the user a pleasant experience. This plus the relatively easy availability of the drug has made it liable to abuse. Oxycodone and its derivatives have been illicitly abused in North America for the past 20-30 years.
Oxycodone is a Schedule II narcotic analgesic and is extensively used in clinical practice. In the last decade, Oxycodone has become of great concern to the DEA and numerous adverse health effect bulletins have been released. In 2004, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the marketing of generic forms of controlled release Oxycodone products (e.g. oxycontin).
Oxycodone is an excellent pain killer that can be taken orally. The drug is frequently used in clinical practice to manage pain after surgery. The drug is very effective for moderate to severe chronic pain (e.g. back pain). The drug is usually recommended for short term use not lasting more than a few weeks at a time. Generic forms like long term oxycontin are frequently administered to patients with terminal cancer.
Like all opioids, oxycodone use is regulated. Thus, when it is acquired illegally, the drug is expensive on the black market. Prices for black market oxycodone may range anywhere from $25 to 50 for a 50 mg tablet.

To tell you a bit about myself......I have severe fibromyalgia, severe chronic pain, neuropathy etiolugy unknown, etc. etc. etc. (too many chronic health probs to even want to name them all here.
I did take oxycontin for my pain management...at (due to insurance not covering the oxycontin) this time the pain management specialist switched me to MS Contin ER. The thing is before I was put on either one of these drugs, I was unable to function, walking, standing, dressing, showering, small tasks were impossible. I had to have extensive help with a homecare aide.......the specialist decided it was time to help give me a better quality of life, I was tired of crawling just to make it to a restroom. I still have a homecare aide, but she comes a lot less now that I can do more for myself. I have gotten some dignity back in my life, finally being able to do soem things for myself!
It can be used safely when taken properly & not crushed, injected etc. which many of the abusers are doing. My instincts tell me that this is what the Cummings/Croslin clan were/are using the drug. Which is very unsafe & can cause death due to it's rapid release. None of the drugs in this family should ever be broken, crushed etc.!
I will admit I was terrified the 1st time I took my 1st dose. It has now given me a life back which I thought was over. I'm terrified everytime I have to fill my script & bring someone with me in fear of an addict who may be sitting at the pharmacy overhear any mention of what I'm picking up.
The meds are used for those who have need long term pain management. If there was a cure for my chronic health probs, believe me I wish there was, but in the mean time I am now able to visit my grandkids, go shopping, walk to the bathroom & have a social life again. It is still severly limited, cause I have many bad days due to flares from the fibro etc., but compared to how many bad days I had 9 yrs ago before being prescribed the MS Contin ER,(Which is also a narcotic....generic name morphine sulfate ER) I am living a much better quality of life than before.
I know that many who are addictive prone to drugs have a hard time being able to take them exactly as they should & that's when the problem starts. Thank God I'm not one of them. No I can't do without it, but ALL of my Dr's agree that it's not due to a want, but because it's to have somewhat of a life again.
Just my :twocents: for those who don't know much about the use of the drugs.
They can be a blessing & YES they can be someone's Nightmare as well.
If anyone has any questions for please feel free to ask. I'm not shy nor afraid to be truthful on the subject.
