Family searching for Clinton County man missing for nearly a month

LOCK HAVEN, CLINTON COUNTY (WOLF) — It's been almost a month since Alex Mardis man went missing.

Now his family is taking matters into their own hands and searching for him themselves.

"Alex had a lot of people that loved him. We just want him back. Good or bad, we need closure," said Tammy Mackey, Mardis's aunt.

Mackey said she filed a police report three days after Mardis was last seen heading out to fish.

"They say he was fishing October 30. He walked into the woods behind my dad's house in Avis and that's the last time anyone's seen of him," said Mackey.

Mardis, 30, of Avis was last seen by a friend at the Pine Creek Boat Ramp that connects to the Susquehanna River.

"There's just some things that don't add up. They say that he most likely drowned, but I don't know," said Mackey.

Family and friends of Mardis said someone called 911 the day he went missing to report a person possibly drowning in the river.

Alex Mardis, 31, of Avis, has been identified by friends and family as the missing fisherman who vanished from the Wayne Township boat launch at Alan Gardner Memorial Park, behind the township building.

[...]

WNEP’s report stated that Mardis’s boots were located downstream by his family sometime last week.

On Wednesday, Oct. 30, Lamar State Police stated that a known male witness observed what he described as a white male with black hair and a black beard struggling and yelling for help in the Susquehanna River near the boat launch.

Following a day of searching, state police at Lamar released a followup statement on Oct. 31: “Investigators searched near this incident for any unattended vehicles or watercraft in an attempt to identify the individual who was observed in the river. As of (Oct. 31) at 12:45 (p.m.), the individual has not been identified and there has been no reports of missing persons in the area which match the description of the victim. Investigators are still following up on leads to identify and confirm that was in fact in the river. Updates will be made if any additional information is discovered.”

Family reaches out for answers in disappearance of Alex Mardis

LOCK HAVEN — They don’t sleep. They don’t eat. They cry a lot and have horrible thoughts about what may have happened to the handsome 31-year-old man they love dearly.

It’s been more than 100 days since the mysterious disappearance of Alex Mardis.

They’ve called all of Alex’s friends and relatives. They’ve formed search parties and scanned the area where he was allegedly last seen. They’ve made and put up hundreds of posters on poles and in mini marts, bars, and other places that people frequent in hopes somebody might recognize Alex.

But, nothing… nothing has given them a clue as to where Alex might be… even if he’s dead or alive.

Clinton County man missing for over 100 days

“The whole drowning in the river thing doesn’t make sense. The timeline is not right its not Alex, you know. I know somebody hurt him we know somebody hurt him,” Mackey said.

Police mounted a search, but turned up nothing. Mackey tells us that’s when family members took the search into their own hands.

They’ve searched the water here at the Wayne Township boat launch and the woods at Alan Gardner Memorial Park. Dogs have been used in the search, and they have looked through his personal items, but have turned up no clues.

Skeletal remains found in Clinton County thought to be man missing since Oct. 30

UPDATE:
The body of a Clinton County man missing since last Oct. 30 might have been found.
It might take several weeks for the results of scientific tests to confirm the identity, Clinton County Coroner Zach Hanna said Monday.

However, Bruce Gray said family members have been told the remains are believed to be those of Mardis, his grandson.

Two fishermen Thursday afternoon found skeletal remains in the Susquehanna River near Avis, and they are believed to be Alex Mardis.

Snip

The theory is Mardis went fishing and was swept away by the swollen river. Some family members disputed that. saying he would not have gone fishing with the river being high.

Aunt fears foul play involved in disappearance of nephew who vanished while allegedly fishing at the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania

Alex’s aunt, Tammy, told Dateline that her father, Alex’s grandfather, does not believe Alex would have gone fishing at that time, even though he is an avid fisherman. They said it had been raining so hard that the river’s water levels were dangerously high.
They found a Muck boot, but no rod or tackle box.

The boot was sent to a state police lab, along with items provided by the family to compare Alex’s DNA to the DNA found on the boot, but the family said they have not received any results.

“It’s been months and we haven’t heard anything about those results,” Tammy told Dateline. “We just want answers.”

Trooper Kim Patterson with the Pennsylvania State Police in Lamar, who is the lead investigator on the case, told Dateline that the investigation is still active.

“We’re realistic. We don’t think he’s alive,” Tammy said. “But he deserves to be found. We deserve to find his body and put him to rest. I can’t go 20 or 30 years and never find him. My elderly father deserves to know he was found. I’ll never give up looking for him.”
