I don't care for the optics either, but I get that the group was elated and this will probably be the most memorable day in their careers. I think it's a sign of the times... all the selfies, posting pics on FB and Instagram has become a way of life for many. Guess I'm just old school... so for example, I decided not to take a picture of my 50th blood donation because I was only doing what I should be doing,,, and when you think of it, I should have given 75 donations by now.
It's been going on for a while. First time I remember it is soldiers taking photos with the people they killed in Iraq. It's gross to me.

Caught up here. First read of the capture on yahoo.

"Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said Cavalcante, 34, was located after a burglar alarm at a residence went off shortly after midnight and an aircraft using night vision technology (FLIR) picked up a heat signal nearby. Bad weather grounded the craft but a tactical team moved into the general area over the course of the night. When the aircraft returned in early morning, law enforcement was able to zero in on the thermal image." Pennsylvania manhunt: Police finally capture Danelo Cavalcante 2 weeks after prison escape

Well done !
I did not expect him to be taken alive. Thank God no one was injured, including the brave beautiful dog who got him.

I noticed the map where he was found...right on the edge of the perimeter! Bet he was planning to slip over on the other side.
Thank heavens that didn't happen!
What an incredible manhunt this was!

Please forgive my ignorance:

What expertise would Customs & Border Patrol tactical team have in apprehending a little guy hidden in a woodpile?
They are in charge of all US borders including our border with Canada. They need to be ready for anything.

I know most of my fellow posters object to the LE group photo, and I do see that it can look like a Super Bowl victory.

But, just my unpopular opinion, this is such a supremely victorious outcome that I hope his ex-girlfriend’s children eventually frame it and put it in their wall.

Only me, I know, but I’m content with the picture.

Maybe also frame it with something durable and put it in his next SECURE prison cell.

At least he can't 'hunt' those kids down now !

Who knows, but he may have targeted them for further revenge ?
For sure the oldest, the seven year old, knew what he did, and that the killer was D. Cavalcante ?
She or he could identify him.

Some people who are injustice collectors carry grudges for years.
A terrible way to live.

So nice to see everything come together, for example; the man power, the use of trained K-9's and the equipment such as piloted helicopters with FLIR technology. One blip was the storm that occurred just as the FLIR found a human almost giving DC that one last chance. But surrounding that site sealed the deal for LE. Good on them!
Despite calls for humans and dogs becoming hyperthermic and scratched to pieces, they got the job done. Many of the officers worked 20 hour shifts per CNN. Their families must also have been worried sick. But such a happy day. May they all go home to a good meal and a long, restful sleep.

I think they were brought in because of the aircraft that was used, I don’t think local/state LE has one like that.

I heard that she was in ICE custody and was going to be deported. Good riddance to her!
Agreed .
And just why would anyone 'help' someone like him ?
Who knows, someday Cavalcante could turn on them !!

I don't know much about the Brazil murder, but the slaying of his ex girlfriend in front of her young kids, was unforgivable.
Imo.

That was one of the reasons that would have been eliminated with his demise, which I'm sorry to say I was partly hoping for. But I hope he goes to a maximum facility. The children will think that he may escape again. The trauma that they've been through and then continually go through with his escape and possibly re-escaping is hard to think about.

I believe the Flir technology is in a fixed-wing aircraft that DEA owns.

I saw it on a video flying over French Creek Elementary and was at a very low level, basically just above the treetops. For the same reason, it does not appear on FlightRadar24 data.

In the last couple of hours for the search, it was up there in that sort and lightning with the ever-diligent B407 State Police helicopter.

Kudos especially to the B407 helicopter pilots who spent endless hours on this search.

Heard it was DEA on radio, couldn’t find a link, thanks

The earliest "capture " photo I think of is Bonnie and Clyde 1934. Texas archives holds those grisly photos. After that many days of being wet, hot, and bug bitten, I don't blame LE and other agencies celebrating with a mission accomplished photo.
Those are the photos to get them through the next tough mission.

And don't forget.

His sister's boyfriend helped DC elude capture after the murder and had to get a plea deal to avoid going to prison, too.

Deport the entire lot of them.

I agree it is base to take a photo with a person that has been killed. Also wrong to take a picture with any prisoner in a demeaning position.

IMO, taking a photo with a live healthy prisoner that has been successfully captured is a different matter. This unit was proud of their work and the fact they captured him alive and without incident. The escaped prisoner was armed. They could have just as easily opened fired and killed him, but they professionally and dangerously carried out their mission with out harm to the escaped prisoner.

This is a picture represents a job well done.

Finding people traveling and hiding on land is their specialty.

IR was always going to get him if he was still in the area.

So the mass of personnel was to secure the perimeter and then FLIR was used, basically as a fishfinder. Dogs to flush out.

They fought to get him. Seems a picture is appropriate.
They all feared getting a scoped neck shot out of the dense brush.
