Lehigh University and its police department asked for help Saturday in locating a missing student.

Daniel Lee, a second-year engineering student from East Hanover, New Jersey, has been missing since Friday, university police Chief Jason Schiffer said in a message to the campus community.

Foul play is not suspected in what Schiffer labeled Lee’s disappearance.

Lee was last seen wearing a gray shirt with red sleeves, black-and-white athletic-type pants and black sneakers, Schiffer said.

Lehigh and Bethlehem police have been working closely to try to find him, according to the campus alert.

“As local authorities continue their work to locate the student, our thoughts and support are with Daniel’s family and loved ones, who we are in contact with,” Schiffer wrote.

Police asked anyone with information that may aid in finding Lee to call Lehigh University Campus Safety at 610-758-4200, available 24 hours a day.

Engineering, as many folks know, is a very demanding major. Those who make all A's in high school don't always make straight A's in college (not saying this young man didn't, of course). Maybe a break-up with a sweetheart. Lots of highs and lows in college, as so many of us know.

Worried for him, as someone who long ago also had a summer job in East Hanover and who also went into a college engineering program not far from Lehigh. I feel a lot of empathy for him and his family and am praying for this situation.

Bethlehem police have been assisting in the investigation, and Capt. Nicholas Lechman said Wednesday that there were boat and helicopter searches for Lee along the Lehigh River in the Bethlehem area.

“There was some indication that [Lee] may have been along that area,” Lechman said. The city fire department’s water rescue team and a state police helicopter responded, he said.

Most students have returned to classes from winter break, with classes resuming Monday.

A student may have suicidal thoughts for a variety of reasons. I can't avoid counting mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. Or I know a case when stressors such as academic pressure, relationship problems, and family issues determined a person to give up... It's essential to recognize that suicide is a complex issue, and nobody can identify no one cause in all cases.
Maybe Daniel went through losing a loved one or a difficult home life. Nobody knows, so we shouldn't judge the police's assertion that he could harm himself. I suffered from bullying, and even this was causing me suicidal thoughts.

Sad to read this, especially as a Lehigh alum (MA and Ph.D.) who resided in South Bethlehem for almost 10 years. The campus is within walking distance of the Lehigh River, which is crossed by several bridges a depressed person might jump off, and directly parallel to the river are train tracks that are easily accessible to pedestrians and which are in fairly regular use by freight trains.

If this *is* a case of self-harm, it seems probable that poor academic performance might be the trigger. However, I would also note that there is also a large casino within walking distance of the campus and I could see a student potentially getting themselves in trouble gambling and then feeling despondent afterwards.
Edited after I saw the young man is only 19 and wouldn't be able to access the casino (which uses electronic scanners to verify patrons' IDs).

The coroner's office said it was called to the river, by the Easton city line, on May 19. The man found was Daniel Lee, who was reported missing to the Lehigh University Police Department on January 20, the coroner's office said.

The cause of death was determined to be drowning, and the manner of death was ruled suicide, according to the coroner's office.

Aw, I was just thinking about this poor young man the other day and wondered if there had been any update. I’m sad to read that he’s deceased but hope his family is able to take some small measure of comfort in the fact he was found and can be laid to rest.
