Our families spend much time in Lancaster. My girls called to say how sad they were," about their little town," and the Amish they love.
I am so sad for the families and will be saying my prayers for their girls.
For those little lives lost on this sad day.

On a beautful sunny day in Pennsylvania.
Hi neighbor. Do you know why they have the green shades on their windows? I have seen them and never have heard why they have them.

My hubby has family that are Mennonites and they do not dress like the Amish. I am not sure if that is the difference but thought I would through it in.

Also, a link for the local news.

I understand that but luthersmama said that the people that she was refering to were Old Order Amish.
BTY, I have a rather large Mennonite population in the area where I live and they stick with the traditional dress.
I have never seen any Amish with a camera.
Why do Old Order Amish not like having their pictures taken?

Old Order Amish and Mennonites forbid photography of their people, and their objection is based on the second commandment, Exodus 20:4: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Very interesting reading at that website for those who would like a better understanding of the Amish.

I think they just like them. They are very effective. They're like the old WWII "blackout" shades.

Here I was thinking it was big thing. Pretty simple answer but that is something I just needed to know.

I don't think it's because they just like them. The color/shades assist with the heating and cooling of the house in either winter and/or summer. Also, it helps prevent their furnishings from being bleached by the sun. They are always pulled down when the room they are in faces the sun.

I live in PA, about 1.5 hours from Lancaster. Such a beautiful country. I just took my brother and his wife there in May for a visit. We went on a Sunday though and it was their day of worship so we did not see any, until late day, and they were either in their horse/buggy or on bikes. I have never seen though, as you have mentioned, them with cameras. Perhaps they were elder Menonites?

Love their simple way of life and the beautiful craftmanship. Their quilts are too die for if you love quilts. We toured a one-room school house. Very simple and very quaint. I just can't get over the senseless murders of innocent children. No matter where you live. It's just not right anymore.

Like someone else said, why not just go off in to the woods somewhere and shoot yourself. Don't take the innocents with you........so sad.

Pennsylvania Police: Amish School a 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

How awful for that trooper. The whole thing just makes me teary. Too many children are being killed doing something so ordinary as going to school!

Mennonites can drive cars, Amish don't.

Correct me, anybody, if I'm wrong.

The thought of an Old Order Amish in Cabela's is pretty funny.

The Cabela's catalogue alone overwhelms me!

Good question, Dark Shadows.

What is going on, indeed?

And what can be done to stop it?

luthersmama,

Just curious, how do you know that these are Old Order Amish and not Mennonites? How can you tell the difference?
I got my B.A. from the University of Florida.
Then I decided to get a Teaching Certification from Goshen College.
Goshen College is a Mennonite college.

Imagine my culture shock!

Anyway, based on my limited knowledge, Mennonites can go to school further along - Amish are supposed to stop at 8th grade. Mennonites bathe more often. Amish bathe on Friday nights before church on Saturday. Mennonites can drive cars, but they cannot drink, dance or have premarital sex. SOME Amish practice having sex "behind the barn" with their daughters - so they are ready for marraige to someone else. This MAY be less common than it once was. Mennonites would not do that.

From what I remember, speaking my mind and having an opinion other than the Mennonites was a BAD thing. When I gained too much pregnancy weight and had my wedding band cut off - and was pregnant with no wedding band - I might as well have been Ms. Satan. No one would talk to me.

I remember Mennonites were BIG into music and art teachings for their children, and majorly into helping 3rd world countries - lots of going to other countries - it was required. I doubt Amish travel much past their own villages and to work.

I don't have a link - I just know from growing up around Amish Country that that was supposedly a well known fact. I grew up believing it - doesn't make it true - but everyone else believed it, too. A long time ago, my grandmother showed it to me in a book - because I honestly thought it was a practical joke someone was trying to get me to believe. I was a teen and didn't think there was such a thing as incest.

Yep, you did! I lived in Amish counrty (Grantsville, MD and Springs,PA) & worked at a restaurant called PENN ALPS which was run by Menonites. The Amish still ride thier horse & buggies to market and such. Anyway....my grandmother was Pennsylvania dutch. She was born in 1919. She ran away at age 16. She would tell me of some of the "Amish customs" that she knew of....one of them is similar to that mentioned above. Another, it was said, is that when a woman got married, sometimes the father-in-law would bed her on her wedding night before his son did to make sure she had been pure when married  .... Probably why she ran away....
Both, if true, are pretty creepy...I'm sure that don't do it anymore...

Anyway...such a sad, sad thing for these peaceful people to have to deal with. The poor dear children....again....
I wish so hard that the world wasn't so crazy. Third one in a week...

...according to one Amish counselor who works with troubled church members across the Midwest, sexual abuse of children is "almost a plague in some communities." Some police forces and district attorneys do their best to step in, though they are rarely welcomed. Others are slow to investigate or quick to let off Amish offenders with light punishments. When that happens, girls like Mary are failed three times: by their families, their church, and their state.
