Nolan Grove fatally shot Heiland in the back on April 1, 2023, police said on Friday.

Pennsylvania State Police troopers received a call around 8:27 p.m. on April 1, 2023 regarding a shooting and reporting a child laying on the ground. The police arrived on scene to 50 1st Avenue, Red Lion, in York County, PA, and identified the child as Kain Heiland.

More at 13-year old charged with felony murder of Kain Heiland

Murder of the third degree is a felony of the first degree (10-20 years in prison).

How awful and unfeeling, IMO, was this killing, allegedly by 13 y/o Grove.
Why, just why?
I wonder if he would have allegedly done it if he had been by himself (no mercy from me -- just wondering).
Another firearm, accessible to a minor. Another death. A 12 year-old boy, gone -- in a split second.
Two families who will never be the same. SMH.

A request from Grove's attorney however was made to try and allow the teen to leave house arrest so that he could see his dying emotional support dog at the vet during its final moments.

That request was denied by the judge due to Grove's bail restrictions.

It was also revealed that Grove's house arrest monitor device had broken off last month.

I do not for the life of me understand why Grove's father was not charged. The teen clearly had unfettered access to the weapon and was wandering around the neighborhood pointing it at people all evening prior to shooting of the victim. In and out of his house he went over and over and over with that gun. Why was the young teen able to access it and run around with it all evening? I mean I get that his father wasn't at the home that evening but why was he so easily able to get the gun and ammo?

I don't get the decision not to prosecute the parent of this kid.

Alongside the murder conviction, Grove was also found guilty of:
  • Felony Firearms Not To Be Carried Without A License.
  • Misdemeanor Possession Of A Firearm By A Minor.
  • Four counts of Misdemeanor Recklessly Endangering Another Person.
He was found not guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter.

Judge Maria Musti Cook ordered Grove immediately remanded to York County Prison, denying him bail after the verdict was read. A pre-sentence investigation was also ordered, and Grove’s sentencing is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025 at 1:30 p.m
