In this section of the PC affidavit, LE has described the exact moment when LS was kidnapped. In the highlighted area, LE describes the actions of JS as “consistent with placing something over her head”. The two then “walk together” back to where his vehicle is parked.
There has been some speculation that JS placed some type of hood over LS’s head. I am thinking now that he actually placed a shoelace(s) over head/around her neck and told her to walk with him. If he placed a hood over her head, he was taking a big risk if someone drove by. It would be quite obvious what was going on. I also think she would be seen to be struggling more. By using a shoelace around her neck, he could control her. He could tell her to walk with him and she wouldn’t be hurt. He could gather the lace in one hand, held tautly, at the rear of her neck as they walked and to a passerby it would merely look like a couple walking with the male’s arm around the women’s shoulders.
I think JS then drove to the church parking lot and proceeded to tie her hands and ankles with more of the shoelaces. He may have assaulted her at this time, but he was only there for 5 minutes. He probably told her to sit still and not do anything that would draw attention to them as they drove.
None of the eyewitnesses reported seeing her with some type of hood over her head, but a couple noticed she didn’t wave as they passed which would have been the Amish custom.
