Mary Ann Verdecchia, age 10, Missing since 7 June 1962

LINKS:

I wanted to bump this. It's worth pondering again that there was one murder and two disappearances from ONE floor of an apartment building over a 4-year period. All of the victims were female. Hard to believe that's a coincidence. See the link to Mysteries on the Fifth Floor.

See the link to Mysteries on the Fifth Floor.
I listened to this. Seems like it was done in 2022 and Therese was still extremely sharp. I received/read the book at Christmas but there were a few things that I took away from the podcast that I don't remember seeing/hearing anywhere else.

I don't remember knowing that Jean Emery had previously lived next door to Mary Ann, which is how she knew her and the cat. Therese doesn't seem to think Jean Emery was involved and seems to try to paint her being a prostitute as more out of necessity than anything else. She also completely clears building manager William Dozier. Ultimately she feels that the sighting, by two boys, of Mary Ann getting into a car was credible and that she did so and was subsequently murdered.

Therese Rocco's perspective on this case is probably our best source of information. But if Mary Ann just got into a car and disappeared, there's probably no way to solve the case unless by some chance 60 years later a body is found. But we will not forget Mary Ann.

Somebody knows what happened to Mary Ann.

Whether the person who knows is still alive, though...

Therese seemed to believe Jean and Dozier. I'm not sure why, but of anyone she should know. To me, they were both up to no good in other ways, that's well established, and where there's smoke there's fire. They're both long gone.

Is Jean deceased?

Mary Ann bought Jean cat food, but Jean wasn't in her apartment when Maria Ana returned...
What happened to the cat food? Did Maria Ana leave it on Jean's doorstep?
Did they investigate the building manager (who turned out to be the last person to have contact with Mary Ann)? Was there a connection between the building manager and the other missing woman, Marcella?
The only way I wouldn't suspect the building manager would be if Jean had actually left... But who leaves knowing they just sent a kid on an errand? Wouldn't you wait to get the cat food and give them the money? Unless it was a real emergency, I guess...
If not, I can imagine the building manager saying, "Oh, I think Jean left. Come by and leave me the cat food. I'll give it to her when I get back," etc.
Poor little girl. Abuse has always existed...
Whatever the case,
Rest in peace.

Hope this is allowed as a journalist is covering this. Mysterious WV — very much recommend respectful reporting.
