PA - Michael, 50, & Cathryn Borden, 50, shot to death, 13 Nov 2005

The story circulating among neighbors Sunday was that 14-year-old Kara Borden had told her parents she was going to a sleepover party Saturday night. But when she was dropped off Sunday morning by 18-year-old David Ludwig, her parents awoke and Ludwig was summoned back to the house.

The neighbors heard that when Ludwig arrived to talk, Michael Borden told him to leave outside weapons he had with him.

Then things went terribly wrong. Shooting ensued. Nine-year-old David Borden tried to escape from a side window of the home, neighbors heard, before running past his father's body in the foyer and out the front door to the neighbor's house across the street, where a boy his age lives.

The boy's father already had left for church, but his mother let David inside and called 911.

Their 15-year-old daughter, Katelyn, also ran to a neighbor's house. Police believe Kara left with the shooter. (Two of the Bordens' five children are grown and live out of state.)

Later, neighbors said, police retrieved the Bordens' dog from the house and took it to the children, who were with friends of the family.

Tom and Kim Mannon would learn Sunday that the shooter was a boy who was a lifeguard at Lititz Rec Center along with their 16-year-old daughter, Stephanie. They had substituted for one another and been friendly until Ludwig left the job this summer to work at Circuit City, Stephanie said.

"He was dedicated to saving people's lives. I mean, that was his job; then this happened," Stephanie said. "I never would have expected this ever. I knew they both kind of liked each other, but I knew both their parents didn't allow them to date each other."

Stephanie said Kara and Ludwig met through a homeschoolers group.

"He was a Christian and pretty strong about that," she said.

Ludwig has an outgoing personality and is into music, Stephanie said. Some neighbors said Ludwig often wore black and had a "goth" look.

Several neighbors said the Bordens were committed to their church, Monterey Chapel, near Leola, where Michael Borden was an elder.

David Sheaffer, another church elder reached by phone Sunday night, said the church had been in touch with the family.

"The two children are safe, and we pray that Kara is still well and safe," he said. "We've made contact with (family members) and let them know we'll be there to help for whatever they need us for."

Blinds at all of the second-floor windows of the large, relatively new house were askew. One pane of glass was broken, and the home's two garage doors were part way open. All of this was evidently done to clear the house of the tear gas police SERT teams were said to have fired into it when they first arrived on the scene Sunday morning, on the assumption the suspect was still inside.

That same fear caused police to urge people first to stay indoors, then seek protection in their basements.

As police continued to work into the night under the harsh glare of lights from TV news trucks, the bodies remained in the house. Then the electric candles in several windows of the Borden home came on, adding an eeriness to the already tragic scene.

Around 5:30 p.m., Lititz and Warwick Township police were issued a search warrant for Ludwig's home at 422 W. Orange St., Lititz. About 15 minutes later, two carloads of officers rolled up the long gravel driveway to the home. There, out of sight behind trees, using police car headlights, officers entered the home to conduct the search.

Neighbors living to either side of the Ludwigs reacted with shock at what had happened.

One neighbor, who preferred not to be identified, said the Ludwigs were a "churchgoing" family." He did not know David Ludwig well, but said he seemed quiet and was often seen helping his father do yard work.

"Such a tragedy for both families," he said.

Ann Hoellgobler, of 424 W. Orange St., said the Ludwigs were a quiet family who kept to themselves and were never a problem.

I feel sorry for Kara to a certain extent. If she was not involved in this shooting in any way she will be free.Kara wlll have the rest of her life to remember if she had listened to her parents they would be alive. Now four other children have lost their parents, didn't deserve this. What was she doing hanging around an 18 year old anyway? No doubt trying to be cool.If he went back with a gun, premeditation~will he be eligible for LWOP? My heart goes out to the rest of the family on both sides.

I thought the same thing....plus it is also quite possible that her sibblings will also hold her responsible for what happened. She has a tough road ahead!!

I heard Nancy Grace say that PA has the death penalty, with him being 18 yrs old, I wonder if they will seek the death penalty for him?

I believe it will be up to the prosecuting attorney to decide whether to not to seek the death penalty.

The boy must have taken the gun into the house with him if he shot the dad when the dad was escorting him out of the house. The kids had stayed out all night...did they really expect her parents to be happy about that? The boy should have let the girl out of the car and gone on home. I guess he figured he would face her parents with her and if they gave him any crap he would just blow them away.

I wonder just how much involvment the girl had in the deaths of her parents. If she left willingly with him or if he actually had a gun aimed at her. I've listened to a lot of this story on the news but didn't hear about him taking her at gun point. It sounded more like she went on her own.

I'm sure LE will get to the bottom of the whole story. They will seperate the two when they interrogate them and she should be easy to break because she is so young. I wonder if she knew he had that gun when they went into the house. It's hard to believe that he took her by gun point after she had stayed out all night with him. They may have decided that her parents weren't going to seperate them. I sure wouldn't excuse her yet. There has been so much of kids murdering their parents for every reason that we can imagine so this wouldn't be to surprising.

Remember Sarah Johnson who was 17 yrs when she murdered her parents...trial on CTV...because they were going to turn her boyfriend in to the cops because he was older and they didn't want her seeing him? Everyone was shocked that she could do such a thing. She wanted that boyfriend more then she wanted her parents.

I cannot seem to get this case out of my head. It goes right along with what I tell my almost 13 year old daughter all the time.....one poor decision can dramatically alter your life. I watched Nancy Grace last night as did many of you, and I disagree with Nancy to some extent. This girl is only 14 and I am sure totally confused. I remember what it was like to be 14, to think my parents were the dumbest people on the planet and that I would just die without my friends (no boyfriend at that point). Your whole world is ruled by emotions and horomones. Even if she left with him voluntarily, I am sure she "thought" that she loved him and was in a state of shock after realizing her parents were dead. I just hope that she had no idea that he had a gun and intended to kill her parents. I am giving her the benefit of the doubt for now.

There could not be a worse punishment for her than living the rest of her life with no parents and feeling the guilt of her involvement. I pray that someone gets her the help she needs to deal with this. What a sad and tragic thing for this family and community.

I always have worried that my daughter would date someone later (way later) that could harm her, now we parents have to also worry about our own safety.

Here we go again with the "goth" look.... .

P.S. Nancy Grace is driving me crazy lately.....she is so rude that I mostly just sit there with my mouth agape and shake my head....how does she get away with some of "her stuff"....

I guess it is all in the name of ratings but IMO there is a limit!!! Nancy is quickly losing her credibility with me while at one time I used to respect her victim's advocacy.:bang:

I hope they do give him the DP-he deserves it.
as for her- I am not sure-she is only 14 and u have to wonder
what influences he had on her-i know its not necessarily all him-but 14 year olds are pretty young when an 18 yr old boy is involved..
I just hope she wasnt aware that he would do this-she will also be in jail forever-
just seems so stupid of them both really
and how did they think it would benefit them-
OK- so my parents dont want me to date u - but if we kill them we will be in jail dating noone ever again???
not the brightest bulbs in the pack.
I agree with the poster who says that one decision changes the course of your whole life and not for the better..
How much thot do these kids put into the bigger picture-NONE.
What is missing in their brains..u dont kill 2 people so u can date and think u will be free to do so for long-I mean they were not richkids who could hide-did u see the car he drove-typical of an 18 year old but not the stuff of financial independance- I just dont get the brain of such choices.

i think he's trying to look "hot", but in reality, he just looks stupid :)

looking through his pics, you see that he's not the best looking guy in the world. Kara was a gorgeous girl, so obviously he would do anything to keep a girl of her caliber interested in him...

It was interesting David's webjournal was still up last night and I was reading a few of the remarks left by others....some were speculating that it was all Kara...that David was just as you say not very good looking and easily manipulated into doing whatever his little girlfriend wanted....I don't want to repeat too much of what was said there (some of it was garbage) and I am not sure if it is still up or not to reference...but just wanted to indicate that "some" who seem to think they "know" say that Kara was definately involved in the killing of her parents!

Agreed!

There is something about the personalities that subconsiously they don't want us to see their eyes....it's almost like they want to disappear or appear invisible to others.....IMO

My opinion too. I always say look at the eyes.We can put any number of labels on people but "the eyes are the window to the soul" usually prevails. This case isn't about goth or even potential goth. This is a junior sociopath that commited crimes before he was truly ready to deal with these crimes. Most sociopaths tread the water for awhile...he jumped in and was caught.

Thank goodness for future victims he may/would have had.
