Philadelphia police are investigating after a body was found on the banks of the Schuylkill River on Monday night.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The body of a transgender woman was found on the banks of the Schuylkill River in Southwest Philadelphia earlier this week, Action News has learned.

Dominique Rem'mie Fells was found just before 7 p.m. Monday.

Action News was on the scene as police investigated along the 3500 block of Schuylkill Avenue in the Bartram's Gardens area.

Police said Fells was found face down, suffering from stab wounds, and both legs were severed.

Thank you for that update! Initial reports I read from the local papers were falsely indicating that it was likely she was hit on the railroad tracks, hence the severed legs. I am very glad they got the facts out there.
This is troubling as these crimes imo tend to not be closed. Though advocates in Philly have immediately spoken up.

This case is from last year but gives an idea of the ongoing issue of black trans women being killed in Philly. This one, thankfully, was solved:

Unfortunately, I know of at least one more trans woman’s death who was misidentified by most local news orgs as male. One, 6abc I believe, did eventually amend it to their proper gender identity. Their friends and family had been looking for them for several months before they were finally properly identified.
One of the many issues facing the solving of murders of trans individuals.
All imo and random thoughts.

I just wanted to share that they issued an arrest warrant today for Rem’mie’s killer:

“ Action News has learned an arrest warrant has been issued in connection with the grisly murder of a transgender woman.

The warrant was issued for Akhenaton Jones, 36, who is a male acquaintance of the victim, 27-year-old Dominique "Rem'mie" Fells.

Fells was found June 15 near Bartram's Garden with stab wounds and both of her legs were severed...(more at link, respecting copyright rules but no paywall at least.”


I am grateful that all those who love her can at least find solace that the person who committed this gruesome act will face justice.

''A fugitive wanted for the June death of 27-year-old Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells has been arrested in Los Angeles, according to a police statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Akhenaton Jones, 36, was taken into custody in Los Angeles, police stated. “We are awaiting extradition. Further information will be released upon availability.”
