Official: Cadaver dogs hit on points of interest in search for Altoona woman who disappeared in 1999

Huntingdon County District Attorney George Zanic said cadaver dogs have hit on points of interest at a rural county farm during the search for clues in the 1999 disappearance of an Altoona woman.

While search crews spend another day at the farm looking for clues related to Sherry Leighty's disappearance, more than 50 officials are at the scene and two wells have been drained.

New York State Police brought in seven cadaver dogs, and Pennsylvania State Police brought in two cadaver dogs.

A search warrant is also shedding more light on the case.

Huntingdon County DA George Zanic says they have identified "points of interest" and plan to start digging soon.

Police are searching the 150 acre camp for the body of Sherry Leighty. An Altoona woman missing for the last 13 years.

Update: Authorities say they have brought in cadaver dogs and excavation units to a camp near Warriors Mark.

Although they obviously had their issues, and he may well have known something about Sherry's fate for a long time, I have to applaud Aaron for doing the right thing.

It must have taken a lot of courage for him to implicate his own father and to face the reality of what happened.

Oh Shellz.... my heart goes out to you.

((big hugs))

You never gave up looking for your sister and asking questions. Now people are paying attention, and the case is getting blown wide open. The fact that the dogs hit on the property is huge.

I am holding my breath that Sherry may be put to rest properly soon.

Yes Shellz is a super star. I don't know if she'll ever come back to this thread but what a champion for Sherry :)

'''"I heard some people thought it was weird the way he was around her," Aaron Leighty said, adding the most notable behavior being his father rubbing her shoulders. Perhaps it was because he was his father, but Aaron Leighty said he didn't see it that way at the time.''''

Sounds like dad had a fascination/obsession with her perhaps. I'm trying to find where in one of the previous articles of the last few days I thought I saw a part saying Ken may have groped her in her sleep or something like that. Couple that with this ^^^ info and it sounds like he was really pursuing her, perhaps after the split with Aaron . She may have denied his advances OR what Ken says is true he may have accidentally killed her trying to keep her quiet ( accident being used very liberally here ) . How much trauma has the world seen due to libido ? :(

"(The last several years have been) rough," said Aaron Leighty, Sherry's ex-husband. "Having (the children) ask questions that I could never answer. We never knew what happened."

"It just wasn't like her just to get up and leave. It shocked me," said family friend Rhonda Detwiler. "(She wouldn't do that to her children) or to Aaron for that matter."

Aaron Leighty was left to raise their three young children by himself.

"I just never knew. And so I just kinda tried not to think about it too much," said Aaron Leighty. "The kids are doing alright. They're doing their best."

My heart is very heavy for Shelly and Sherry's children. It really seems like Aaron had nothing to do with Sherry's disappearance, I feel very sad for him, especially if his own father is responsible for her disapperance!

Mods, I have a question on this . Can Shells post the names of both the x ( just found his name in the msm) and the bf and can we sleuth them? I have no idea how it would work given the TOS/ victims and vic's families terms.
The x has me wondering because she tried to file for divorce but he refused to sign. That indicates that he didn't want to let her go. SO red flag there that she immediately goes missing. The bf at that time who moved back to Maine is one to look at.

I'm wondering if she was into partying or hanging out with a rough crowd at all? Any
way through face book any of her old friends could be looked up and find out? It's possible she was behaving in front of her family but might not be so in front of her close friends.

When I was wild, no one in my family had any idea or what type of crowd I was running with !

SCHMAE, I'm thinking the other way around, I think the Husband who didn't want to let her go snapped because of the BF, the parents obviously helped, I mean how many times have we heard "I dropped so and so off about a block before work" that to me is a dead giveaway, they always seem to disappear after they get dropped a block away, and the work place could not have seen this so called drop off......you know where I'm going with this :)

Now the x husband let police listen to a phone call between he and his father and the father admitted it to his son on the phone. I'd be surprised if the x was involved or why would he let that happen ?

But yes you're right if every missing woman's ' last person to see them' made a statement that they just took off and LE just believed them, no missing women would EVER be found. This is a serious mess from the altoona pd. Shame !

you are right , what if that phone call was a cover up? they certainly could have had time to tell each other what to say!

And dad agreed to take the fall ? Well I supposed you could be right. Its' curious how neatly things are fitting together after so long. I agree that hubs are often involved and was highly suspicious of him from the word go. The only way I could picture dad allowing himself to take the fall on the phone call is if dad's terminally ill and going to be dead soon and figured he would not let his son go down for it if dad's only got say 6 months to live. That's a big ole web of what if's though.

I don't think the husband was involved at all.

When you look at the FIL's inappropriate behavior with her, the fact that his truck was found on the farm, he lied about being at work, and then the recorded phone calls...

The only thing I did find odd was that Sherry's son said he had heard over the years that she was buried on the farmland... which means the ex most likely heard that too, as they lived in the same house - so I think he may have had an idea of what happened, but instead of criticizing him for not saying anything sooner, I'm just grateful that he decided to do the right thing now. It is his parent, it had to be extremely devastating.

I truly hope this case gets solved quickly and Sherry's remains are found. It troubles me that these kids lived in the same house as their mothers killer for so long.

Snipped from SCHMAE's link above:

Huntingdon County District Attorney George Zanic said Tuesday there are no new developments in the search. Seven cadaver dogs and their New York State Police handlers have helped in the search of the mostly wooded property, Zanic said, noting investigators are focusing on several areas.

Zanic said searchers have mapped out the areas and begun excavating, but as of Tuesday afternoon the whereabouts of Sherry Leighty remains a mystery.

Continued prayers for Sherry's family and loved ones. :please:

She has to be there somewhere. :( I can't imagine the old guy confessing if it's not so unless he's got some dementia, which I'm sure would be apparent to his son and investigators .
I hope Shellz is doing ok.
