GUILTY PA - Sherry Leighty, 21, Altoona, 1 October 1999

like others i read this whole thread once the case was spotlighted. i am really praying that shelly and her family, and sherry's children have answers soon!

shelly, you are the kind of advocate that every missing person needs in their life. when this is all over i hope you will continue to use your experience to put pressure on that PD. no one should have to wait 13 years for an answer they could have had in 2 days if things had been handled right.

Shelly, I wish you were my sister. Mine wouldn't even agree to take care of me for the first week after my hysterectomy last year. Can you imagine how much help I'd get if I disappeared? :)

Look at that. The police finally report her missing and bones turn up. Amazing how actually looking for a missing person can produce results.

Why do I think that sreshowtime mentioning that September 26 was a Sunday and Shellbellz passing that information along made a difference? Coincidence? I think not.....

I just read through this entire thread in one sitting. I am still in shock by the lack of effort by the local PD and saddened that a family would be treated this way. I'm also glad her sister is finally getting some answers even though I prayed there would be different results. Lots of thoughts and prayers to Shelly.

just found this thread prayers for your family i wonder who was the tip off to the le to look into exs and parents property

Thinking of you today Shelly - hold tight for Sherry- I really really pray they are making headway in the case now. IMHO there was crucial mistakes/things overlooked right after she was reported missing....I am in hope that has been addressed within the confines of LE and they have swallowed that proverbial pride, and are in process of addressing and remedying those errors.
Please justice, come swiftly for Sherry

http://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/Pa-man-charged-in-daughter-in-law-s-1999-death-4510707.php

"Search warrants issued last month for his property in Huntingdon County show police suspected he had buried her there. The complaint charging Leighty with criminal homicide said Leighty confessed on Friday and helped investigators find the woman's remains on Saturday on land he owns in Warriors Mark Township, about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh."

^^ are they talking about the phone calls or something else.. I feel like I completely missed this.

Shellz has lived up to the word "sister". She can be my relative any day because she fought for what she knew needed to be done. This man could have hurt others, including Shelly, if she had not pressed so hard.

My prayers and thoughts will be with they leighty family until this case is closed. *hugs*

Oh my Shelly, if you come back here, know my heart is breaking for you and your family, for Sherry's children who had their mother so horrifically taken from them. From all of you.

I just knew when you mentioned that family land, that just did not sit well with me.

May you find some peace and rest now that Sherry has been found, and courage and strength to face the coming days.

I am so sorry Shelly. What love, strength and courage you have shown. I feel like your sister has been shining down on you, holding your hand with love.

RIP Miss Sherry. Heaven must be dancing for you today!

I am really really sorry for your family's loss but glad that you finally have answers and that Sherri will finally be properly laid to rest. Hopefully that can bring some closure to you and to her children.
