UPDATED: James Lee Troutman’s alleged confession will be heard at murder trial

The judge, who still must rule on other pretrial issues, has not yet set a trial date for Troutman, who is charged with first- and second-degree murder, rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment and abuse of a corpse in connection with the May 9, 2011, rape and killing of Skyler Rae Kauffman.

Twenty-four-year-old James Troutman of Souderton is in Montgomery County Court, entering a guilty plea to a charge of first-degree murder in the death last spring of nine-year-old Skyler Kauffman.

TROUTMAN PLEADES GUILTY

James Lee Troutman, 25, pleaded guilty Monday in Montgomery County Court to charges of first-degree murder, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, kidnapping, and abuse of corpse in connection with the May 9, 2011, death of 9-year-old Skyler Rae Kauffman.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors took the death penalty off the table. Troutman will serve life in prison with no chance of parole.

"Any time that I can save a client's life, I will take it," Troutman's attorney Craig Penglase said. "That was the goal in this case."

He said his client has wanted to plead guilty from the beginning.
