On 14 July 2016 Todd Messner entered a plea and was sentenced 18 to 36 months’ incarceration, followed by 3 years’ probation.

On March 13, 2017 he appealed to the Superior Court of Pennsylvania to have the trial court's decision to not return the several firearms seized by police used during his arson-related offences.
On 2 February 2018 the decision was filed.

His life ended tragically on 26 July 2019 when he was shot and killed by police after having been acting strangely and causing a disturbance. Todd Messner was a veteran, and had been on tours in Kosovo and Iraq. He had had an accident in Iraq, and his life had became a struggle as he tried to navigate the VA system to deal with getting treatment for his injuries.
