GUILTY PA - Woman raped on train as bystanders record, Philadelphia, 13 Oct 2021

Bystanders on Philadelphia train held up phones as woman was raped, police say

A man charged with raping a woman on a commuter train just outside of Philadelphia harassed her for more than 40 minutes while multiple people held up their phones to seemingly record the assault without intervening, authorities said.

More than two dozen train stops passed as the man harassed, groped and eventually raped the woman, the police chief for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority said at a news conference Monday.

Riders who shot photos, video of Philadelphia train rape but didn't help victim could be charged

'Collectively, they could have gotten together and done something'

OMG!!!!!! This hurts my soul......what have we become?

I'm sorry but how did nobody, not one single person stand up and do something? How? This is disgusting. What happened to staying together, protecting each other, etc? How could someone just sit there and watch it happen? So gross.

Go back to Sham's post. Some people depending what stop they got on could have thought it consensual. Or they thought it was addicts. We have the largest open drug market in the world supposedly. Not just the USA.

Staying together? This is Philly. Nobody wants to get shot.

They could have called 911. We do have SEPTA Police. They're usually busy, but a regular 911? I don't know?

You'd have to ride the demon train to see for yourself.

@Peopleofsepta

Unable to link but go to that Instagram and pick out the person who would help that poor lady.

There's also a Facebook page which is dated back to 2018. It's been replaced by Kensington Beach FB and Instagram. One of the El's busiest stations. Not for the faint of heart. Many of those people "live" on the El. Especially in winter.

Edit to say at the Kensington Beach Instagram there's a man on the El shooting up. Just in case it triggers someone.

Honestly I don't think it's "we".

One ride on the El would help you understand.

All kinds of nasty things happening on our buses as well. The driver won't intervene. He doesn't have a gun. They'll stop the bus and put a call in.

I know there are good people too....as a non-verified psychologist.....the bystanders effect is famous. Bystander effect - Wikipedia

Sadly, I don't think it's the bystander effect.

Oh there are awesome, kind, good people here. Actually living here for 61 years I've seen we help tourists more. Then we come together. That has to be a phenomenon.

All those people at that Instagram above are not bad people. We are just messed up, and fearful. Reiterating my grandfather got blown away trying to help someone.

I put in a like but I'm not liking it at all. How sad.....many are trying to do good and end up to be hurt......so sorry....

Oh it's OK, Bit. My grandpop's murder coupled with my dad being a highway cop then a Detective conditioned us not to personally get involved, but to call 911.

Don't always work. I helped some poor lady that got mugged. Other people saw it and kept walking or driving.

My one brother. Mail Carrier stepped in many times to help people. Fires, shootings. His wife and my parents would flip.

The El is like it's own entity.

Nothing to add....If I was living in Philly from let say next month on I would either be scared all the time or starting to shoot up attackers....no good....

Curious, what would you have them charged with? What crime did they commit?

Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt, of the Upper Darby Police Department, has said surveillance footage showed other riders were on the train and someone “should have done something.” Messages for Bernhardt were left Monday.

The New York Times reported Bernhardt said that people who recorded the attack and failed to intervene could possibly be charged, but that would be up to the Delaware County District Attorney’s office to determine.

the superintendent would be the one to ask. I simply bounced off his alleged statement in this article.

I saw "shoot up" and was thinking I'd drag you off the Ave.

Naw, it's not scarry if for generations your people took the El.

Say you live Girard Station and work in town? Zoom you're there in minutes. My mother, grandmother worked Smith Kline got there under half an hour. It used to take me tops half hour from NE to 20th Chrstnut.

However prior to Covid my DD went from Erie/Torresdale to where they got this guy. Plus then another bus. Yep, I got an ulcer over it. Dang, social worker.

You get to know people. The turtle guy. He sells salmonella Flippin turtles on the El. The candy lady whose hat is made out of candy boxes. The Muslim bean pies, incense and oils. The addicts that boosted some awesome merch and will sell it for pennies.

Rape is not part of this. My heart breaks for this young woman. I'm really sorry to say I wouldn't have jumped on this creep. I'm sorry I don't have a license to carry. I definitely would have gotten off the next stop and dialed 911 although they're short staffed. Yes, I'd get off the El and wait for the next one.

Did she not say "no" several times? That's what the report said, that she said NO. And how is that okay even if it was consensual to be happening in public? Come on, do better. Excuses, excuses. Nobody wants to get hurt. Well, someone got hurt.

I for one appreciate your posts telling it like it is. Now I have another city to cross off my vacation list. Guess I'll never see the Liberty Bell except in photos!

I miss Mr. Chitwood, but like this guy.

Nobody is asking our Chief Of Police. Part of that assault happened in Philly. I'd love to know what she got to say.

What?

Do better? Let me in your world. I'm not victim shaming.

Guessing you've never visited Philly.

Awe, you can still see it. We have a special place in our heart for tourists. Independence Hall is right there. The Jewish history museum. On and on.

Only thing is I'd have to warn you where is OK to wander and not. We've steered many visitors including folks at Phillies games visiting.

Our subway and El platforms get confusing. If you were at the Liberty Bell and then wanted to go to The Art museum. Well, I'd walk with ya. Put it mildly.

Thank you. I am not trying to scare anyone. I rode this thing since I was a child. Rode it to work. Now ride it to Jefferson hospital. My heart breaks for this young woman. It breaks for tourists that get harmed.

You want to see the Liberty Bell message me. I wouldn't let you get hurt.
