I wonder how the black folks who Phil remembers as being so happy living without their civil rights would remember things? Nice of Phil to speak for how all of them really felt lol.

Could it be possible that, as black people in that time and place, when lynchings were still going on, btw, they weren't comfortable talking about things like racism, segregation, civil rights, etc, with a white man?? Yes, even a "poor white trash" white guy, as Phil described himself - because poor white trash, though poor and trashy, still had all their civil rights, and weren't being harassed and assaulted and murdered, unlike blacks.

Blacks usually were instructed not to talk to whites. Couldn't use the front door to enter a white home. In our little town, they had their own school, separate churches and lived in their own section of town where we weren't allowed to venture. The bombings of black churches and lynchings were in the news. Phil seems to gifted at revisionist history.

Perhaps what Phil was really trying to communicate in a broad sense is that he does not suffer from what is known as "white guilt", iykwim?

Maybe that really was his message.

Civil rights were not achieved until the late 1960s. He would've been in his 20s during a time period where segregation and discrimination were openly practiced with legal backing. The issue is not specific to lynching.

Lynchings were still happening in the 60s and some of the worst places were the rural, deep south with good 'ol boy law enforcement. I do not believe Phil happily worked alongside "happy" blacks.

In a way, I'm kind of surprised that there is so much commotion around someone in a highly staged 'reality show' espousing clearly racist and homophobic opinions. Come on, what was the point of this awful show? Anyone with half a brain could see how scripted it was from the outset. And as for things like opinions and beliefs -- anyone who was producing the show would have known in what this family believed, from the outset, so the only surprise would have been that someone opened his cake-hole in public.

This show was past its shelf-life before this incident. This was no accident or mistake -- it is more a matter of true colors shining through. Like it or not.

I think A&E knew from the outset the true character of the participants and they edited it out. It was clearly targeted to Redneck racists and they and Walmart sold them a ton of junk. Apparently now the point of the show is to serve as some kind of Tea Party political platform.

He surely went far beyond stating that (as questionable as that hypothetical is in itself). If he is this educated, fair minded guy that some have claimed, then surely he is smart enough to have just said what he meant without all the "our blacks are happy!", Gone with the Wind type nonsense.

I mean, Surely as an educated person he'd have known that, as a white man, he had no right to speak for those blacks he knew in the pre-civil rights era, and their experiences and feelings. Surely he'd know that, being a white man, poor or not, his experiences were not theirs, he has no real insight into their lives and experiences, and he has no right to make a judgement as to whether they were indeed truly happy or not living in a time and place where their civil rights were not enforced.

I thought this was a joke headline from the Onion or something. Sadly, it's not:

GOP Congressional Candidate: Duck Dynasty Star Is 'Rosa Parks Of Our Generation'

In a fundraising email to supporters, Ian Bayne, who is running in the Republican primary to challenge Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL) in the 11th District, compared Robertson to Rosa Parks. The fundraising email began: "Today, Ian Bayne called Phil Robertson, star of the A&E series "Duck Dynasty," the 'Rosa Parks' of our generation."

Real life surpasses the Onion. Unbelievable, dunno whether to laugh or cry.

I think it's really difficult for people to understand what it's like to be so vehemently hated and told that you are full of "murder" and "envy" and are perverse, or that during a time when your ancestors were being tortured and murdered that they were in fact "happier" if you can't even begin to relate. I am the last person to ask for special treatment or for others to be overly sensitive due to being in both racial and sexuality oriented minorities, but being publicly vilified by "celebrities" with television platforms when I hear the same sh** being said in daily life is tiring and disheartening. I am all for freedom of speech, but these types of soliloquies DO inspire hate crimes, or am I being ridiculous? I live in fear every day of my life, as do others and i grew up in the suburbs and still live in the suburbs but it doesn't make me feel less hated, or scorned.

I understand that many believe he is simply expressing his opinion because of the religion he practices and the beliefs he has held due to his upbringing, but are those not qualities we can ascribe to those who bully, maim, and murder those of us that do not live accordingly? Please correct me if I'm wrong. And no I'm not equating Robertson to being a murderer, but maybe someone understands where I'm going with all this.

I'm not disillusioned in the slightest with the bg of this family and their show. I grew up in the south where churches and McDonalds compete for corners on every block. with all the progress that's been made in legislation and in society, it's just disappointing that someone has to spread a message of distaste for innocent people who are in his and his family's eyes "guilty" of all these ascribed sins when millions are just trying to live a normal life by many of the same core values as he would hold, most I would hope would have nothing to do with shaming others into redemption for being who they are.

Sorry for the long post but I'm sick of turning on my tv and and browsing through my feed only to get slapped in the face for my "choices." Suffering is rampant enough, both in the open amongst our peers and in private in our daily struggles. Can't there be more positive things to say, even in differing opinions?

Some of us just want a break. Even a small one.

Tired and going to bed. Night all.

Not knowing your age..maybe you dont know about the '50's..Back then Billy Graham was rather simplistic in his bible thumping...KISS (Keep it simple Stupid) always makes sense..It's the advocates outside of that want to alter..spin and manoeuver the spoken word......

I was just a knee high chitlen..felt moved..Shocked my folks..BUT supported ..Doesnt matter now like 60 years later...I really tried to walk the walk and live up to my missions.....After 40 years..of front line working with folks...I got validations after the fact..almost daily..

BUT what truly came to my mind was..I didnt need that Validation while I cared for people/vulnerable etc......I felt comforted when I made a difference....Even tho I had stressors and personal home issues..In the end..My career and professional LIFE gave me strength to endure and Now Retired..Dont regret anything....

Im OT..BUT it all goes back to Duck Dynasty Phil..He preaches his stuff..and Many disagree (or agree)..Entertainment values as to his/there antics..Fine..BUT now watchers can visualize this bearded one and his words and actions and know ust how he truly sees the world.....:blushing:

Yep and millions of Christians are standing with Phil. 1 MILLION 700 ON FB STAND WITH PHIL page.

This is where I come down on this.... Phil stated his opinion when asked a question with which the WHOLE response hasn't been shown yet. GQ mag won't be out till middle/late January. This mag is just trying to raise publication sales in only publishing half of his response, other then the fact they even asked him this question!

Let's all be honest.... Who didn't know before hand how this man felt? His is a Christian man in Louisiana. Of course he thinks homosexuality is wrong. He believes in the Bible as God's word, and in the Bible, it DOES say men should not lie with men.

GQ hipped this up to be something it isn't! While Phil says he doesn't agree with this lifestyle he doesn't judge anyone by it. Phil went as far to as to say, it is not his place to judge anyone... at all... He said "God will sort this out later." And that it was his job as a Christian just to love everyone and preach the word.

How is that hate speech?

Thank you for the update Elley Mae :)

'Duck Dynasty' to resume filming with Phil Robertson, A&E announces

http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment...-ae-announces/

In a statement released late Friday afternoon, A&E said, “While Phil's comments made in the (GQ) interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the ‘coarse language’ he used and the misinterpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article. He also made it clear he would ‘never incite or encourage hate.’"
