Patricia "Katie" Krenwinkel

16 October 2022 update:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom blocked the parole of Patricia Krenwinkel, a former Charles Manson follower and convicted murderer in a notorious 1969 killing spree, saying “she currently poses an unreasonable risk of danger to public safety.”

A parole board had in May recommended for the first time that Krenwinkel be released. She had been denied parole 14 times since her conviction.

“After an independent and thorough review, the evidence establishes that Ms. Krenwinkel is not suitable for parole and cannot be safely released from prison at this time,” Newsom said in his review Friday reversing the parole decision.

October 15 2025 parole denied.

ABC News learned Newsom signed a reversal to the decision to grant parole Monday night.

Newsom's conclusion states he considered the evidence, saying "when considered as a whole, I find the evidence shows that she currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison at this time. Therefore, I reverse the decision to parole Ms. Krenwinkel."

The same thing happened in 2022 when Newsom blocked the parole of Krenwinkel, saying she was still too much of a public safety risk to be freed.

A much longer article explaining more:

During the May 30 hearing, Debra Tate, Sharon Tate's younger sister, spoke of the pain she and her family have experienced and the disbelief that a person convicted of seven murders could be up for parole.

"Releasing her to society puts society at risk," said Tate, who spoke during the hearing. "I don’t accept any explanation for someone who has had 55 years to think of the many ways they impacted their victims, but still does not know their names."

Other speakers during Krenwinkel's May 30 parole hearing included Anthony DiMaria and his sister, Mishele DiMaria. Their uncle, Jay Sebring, was shot and killed while he was attending a get-together at the home Sharon Tate shared with her husband, director Roman Polanski.

[Jay Sebring’s nephew] "She is a cold-blooded killer of eight people. The more accurate number is eight, as I include the murder of Tate’s unborn son. Krenwinkel obliterated the rights of all of her victims. Charles Manson did not write Helter Skelter in blood. Patricia Krenwinkel did. She is the author of blood-smeared messages that terrified the world. Parole Patricia Krenwinkel, once her victims are paroled from their graves."

A psychologist noted that she still tends to “externalize” blame for her crimes and lacks self awareness.

IOW she hasn’t owned up to her part in the murders and has no remorse.

Krenwinkel met Charles Manson at age 19 and joined his cult, eventually becoming one of his most devoted followers. During the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders, she actively participated in the stabbing death of Folger and the LaBianca killings, in addition to her involvement in the other five murders.

Krenwinkel had been denied parole over a dozen times before receiving that first recommendation in 2022. Her co-defendant Leslie Van Houten was released on parole in 2023. Fellow Manson follower Charles "Tex" Watson remains in prison, while Susan Atkins died of cancer in custody in 2009. Manson himself died in 2017 after spending more than 45 years in prison.
