"Piece of mail delivered to Pentagon mail facility has initially tested positive for ricin. The facility is a separate building on the grounds of the Pentagon. The item never entered Pentagon bldg. FBI and partners responding."

"Several terror plots which use the toxin [ricin] have been foiled in Europe in the past including an intended attack on a London Underground station in 2003 and a separate attack in Germany in June this year.

After initial exposure to ricin, symptoms ordinarily appear in around 10 hours and death can occur within 72 hours."

"SECRET SERVICE STATEMENT REGARDING RECEIPT OF SUSPICIOUS ENVELOPE WASHINGTON -- The Secret Service can confirm receipt of a suspicious envelope addressed to the President on Oct. 1, 2018. The envelope was not received at the White House, nor did it ever enter the White House. As a matter of practice, the Secret Service does not comment regarding matters of Protective Intelligence. However, in this instance, we can confirm that we are working jointly with our law enforcement partners to fully investigate this matter. Further, all threats directed towards the President, or any Secret Service protectee, are treated seriously and fully investigated."

OMG

Thank you for starting this thread, @Inthedetails.
Seems like it's big news, but not getting much attention. Perhaps other news today is grabbing the headlines.

I hope there are no more envelopes in the mail with this poison - and that the culprit is caught quickly. Thank goodness there are systems in place in the mailrooms that worked and found the poison before anyone was injured.

Seems like the headlines regarding politics have clouded the vision of this. Ricin is scary stuff! So glad they screen it before opening and even sending in.

The ricin letter addressed to the White House and the two sent to the Pentagon seem to be connected:

"An envelope containing what appeared to be the deadly poison ricin was sent to President Trump, but never made it to The White House, a report said Tuesday.

The piece of mail sent to Trump appeared to be connected to two other letters which were sent to the Pentagon, according to CNN."

Still little interest about this case, but there is an update:

"BREAKING: U.S. officials say return address on one of envelopes mailed to Pentagon lead authorities to suspect former U.S. Navy sailor responsible."

"U.S. officials believe packages sent to White House, Pentagon and Senator Ted Cruz's Texas office Monday all part of coordinated effort. None of packages sent to White House or Pentagon made it inside, all discovered during screening. U.S. Secret Service tipped off Pentagon"

Envelopes appear to have been sent from address of former Navy sailor.

"A DoD official said the Pentagon was aware of the reports that the sender was potentially a former service member, but directed all inquiries to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which has the lead on the case.

Similarly, a spokesman for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service directed all inquiries to the FBI."

Interesting....

"In Brussels, Pentagon spokeswoman says initial test showed the letters intercepted by the Pentagon had the substance ricin is derived from, not ricin itself."
