I think that's exactly what he's doing, Kamille, and I think his hot shot lawyer is giving him some very bad advice. All he's doing is pizzing off the people that hold his life in their hands.

Let's say, no appeal. For some leniency at that point, he would have to fill in couple of holes in his confession (If that were even permitted at that point). Let's say that he had a shot at this - what's he gonna do? Tell the truth? As vicious as his confession is, the truth is probably even worse.

Joran does what Joran wants to do. I don't think he listens to anyone. So I am not sure that the lawyer is giving bad advice. He could be but I figure Joran thinks he is so smart he doesn't have to listen to anyone.

Is there a link for that bolded? I've never heard that before and it's interesting. I checked out the link but there is no further link except for the poster who posted it. TIA.

No, no link in the post. Only reference we can see is to the 20/20 video (in Spanish). If not in media or, perhaps, translation thread - video must be buried deep in daily threads. (Bolded parts of translation-by original poster.)

How could she have won money from him, don't you play against the house when you gamble in a casino? Just wondering. tia

Actually a lot of the younger crowd likes to play Texas Hold'em Poker. In Texas Hold'em the house takes a percentage of the pot but the players play against each other.

The Telegraph, without confirmation, said that van der Sloot was lured to Peru by a man working for the FBI, a gambler named Elton Garcia.

The newspaper said the agency was trying to get van der Sloot away from Aruba to a country where he could be extradited to face extortion charges on the Holloway case.

http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/world_news&id=7514262

but we already know that peru does not have an extradition agreement with the usa....wouldnt the fbi have known that - c'mon...

USA has an extradition treaty with Peru in force since 2003.
[ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_extradition_treaties[/ame]

It also has one in force much longer with The Netherlands, however, that might not cover Aruba.
I always think when there is smoke , there is fire and that Elton Garcia is one intriguing character. Although, the Stephany murder has nothing to do with the FBI if they were still keeping taps on Joran IMO.

Positive for amphetamines. Negative on everything else.

I was a bit surprised that cannabis was not positive since Joran is so fond of smoking pot.

Could JVDS be set FREE from jail? Beacause of technicality problems.

Please everyone keep your fingers crossed!!!

Oh, thanks! I think I saw Texas Hold'em Poker promoted on the Atlantic City Casino site. I was interested in learning the differences between couple of types mentioned. I tried to translate, but could not.

Somehow I doubt that Peru plays the technicality games that the US does. I think they are going to show him where to put his technicalities.

I'm wondering what the attorney is planning on appealing. Normally you can't appeal until there's been a final determination (decision) on the case. Occasional interlocutory appeals are cognizable here, i.e. Constitutional issues like no bail or no jurisdiction (authority to hear the case), but they are the rare exception. In order to appeal, you have to have something to appeal. Can't appeal a "charge." Maybe he's looking ahead, which would mean his own attorney is expecting a guilty verdict, but then again, who isn't?

Definitely insane :-) "Legally insane," not a chance. The test in Peru is similar to McNaughten. If he understood the NATURE of his act (Did he know it was criminal?), then he's not legally insane. Doesn't even take an expert to come to that conclusion.

The appeal that JeanC was talking about was on JVS' habeas corpus petition, which appeal would have to be heard and adjudicated before the criminal case itself could go forward. Habeas corpus is a constitutional issue.

just heard an idea that when NH went missing, Sloot Dad would not allow investigators to search in a well on Sloot's property...I was following NH case closely at the time, but isn't that interesting.

Where did you hear the idea?

I remember that, too, epiphany. But I could swear I remember him VERY early on saying he didn't want or need representation. Cause I remember thinking, "oh brother... he has absolutely no clue." This was about the same time he was turned over to the Peruvian authorities. I dunno... :waitasec:

But, as I understand it, now he's complaining about the Chilean police. Once again, he's crying wolf, because I don't think he was actually arrested in Chile just held on an Interpol alert that he was wanted in Peru:

"Joran van der Sloot...was expelled to Lima on Friday after being taken into custody by Chilean police the previous day ... after INTERPOL Peru alerted the international law enforcement community that he was wanted in connection with the death of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez..."

http://www.interpol.int/Public/ICPO/PressReleases/PR2010/News20100609.asp

There's also a newspaper article from the Peru govt thanking Chile for just 'expelling' Joran, instead of 'extraditing' him, which is a much lengthier process, but I don't have that link at my fingertips.

Here's the video of when Joran is being handed over from Chile / Interpol to the Peruvian LE....there were all kinds of papers signed...and they have it on film.

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xI4eOf9VDg&feature=related[/ame]

Followed by Joran signing documents for the PLE after the transfer is complete:

[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hfjw5S7KaHk&feature=related[/ame]

(This is the video that the national media keeps showing as Joran signing his confession....which is totally WRONG!!)

I'm working on getting together the entire set of videos showing his arrest in Chile to his transfer to Peru. Once I have it all together, I'll post it on the media link.

Since Stephanie was positive for one drug; this seems to rule out the "date rape" drug indicated by her father early on.

Well, in that case, watch the casino video again...at one point the dealer takes the chips Joran had betted and gives them to Stephany on her win...now THAT must have ticked him off!! Unless he planned, of course, on getting it all back later in the hotel room!!

Do we know if this "Elton Garcia" person actually exists?

There is something odd about Elton Garcia. He did play in the LAPT tournament according to various daily poker reports. Got eliminated on day 2 and won some money , a few thousands or so. He is, however, not in the LAPT data base. Just very odd.

There is a urine test for Rohypnol (commonly called date rape drug); however, the drug can only be detected for up to 72 hours after ingestion. IDK what happens if a death intervenes.

Yes, while he has been a "practicing" agnostic, there's an upcoming window of opportunity for JVS to find truth and beauty in all things! At least here in the U.S., an overwhelming majority of defendant's find God in the short time span between the guilt phase of trial and the sentencing phase.

Hesitant to bring his religion or lack of into discussion...when one is at the very bottom, irregardless of circumstance, where is there to look but up? IMO

For godsake, I hope you are right! I am very glad that Stephany's father is a liked well-known business man in Peru!!
