I'm curious about when this extortion attempt occurred as well. My guess is that it was rather recent. If it happened in the past, why would they just now file charges? On the other hand, maybe whoever is filing charges it just trying to add to Joran's current criminal problems. I dunno...

You're right... the information is flying fast and furious. I suspect a lot of misinformtion is slipping through since everyone is tripping over themselves to be the first to report.

Just found it, and it was filed, he did this on May 10, 2010:

Linky to filed complaint:

At least we know, if nothing else, he cannot come to the US without getting some Federal Prison time. Hopefully though, he will be happy in Peru's dark corners for the rest of his time.

I guess we'll have to be patient regarding sorting out the facts from the possibly false info being reported along with translations confusing the info even more.

How will we be able to follow this? I hope we'll have access to accurate information somehow.

Carefully. Many idioms used in the Spanish language. Not necessarily inaccurate reporting in all of the SA sources.

I think "swimsuit" is really "panties" and it somehow got confused in translation

I thought about the translation too but wondered if "swimsuit" could mean her "bra" since they reported she had a blouse and jacket on thus meaning the lower half of her body was nude.

The "she" mentioned in the article and the quote is one of Rafael's friends, not Stephany. Stephany did not see the show about Natalee. The author of the article did a poor job of reporting.

On the show I saw this a.m. he was talking about Stephany, I cannot find the link to a vid. It was the Today Show, Meredith directly asked about Stephany and Rafael talking about Joran. This was his comment. So he was speaking of Stephany, don't know how to find a replay.

Here's a link to the story on myfoxAL: http://www.myfoxal.com/global/story.asp?s=12591263

and the criminal complaint -- it was filed today?? (My edit: look at the date of the alleged extortion - May 10, 2010)
VANDERSLOOTCOMPLAINT.pdf

I'm confused, did he offer to pay $250,000 to find her body or did he ask for the money to tell the information?

Most of the information I can gleen about the extradition treaty between Chile & Peru comes in articles about the extradition of Fujimori which began in 2005 although it looks like he wasn't actually extradited until 2007. But he was a prominent political figure and his situaiton was a bit different then VDS. The Extradition Treaty is from 1932 and I can't find one in English.

An article on the Living in Peru website http://www.livinginperu.com/news/offers the best description I've found and reinforces what I read about needing a Peruvian rather than an Interpol wrarrant to begin extradition.

“If he has committed any infraction against Chilean migratory laws, he could be promptly expelled and deported to Peru, after some administrative paperwork,” said on air attorney Roberto Miranda, one of the professionals consulted by Radio Capital. “But if there is no violation to any Chilean law, then we would need Chile to extradite him to Peru to face trial here, and that would mean another legal procedure.”

Peruvian Justice would need to issue today an arrest warrant on Joran van der Sloot, signed by a judge, before being able to take any legal action, warned Miranda.

Chilean police, however, estimate it is likely van der Sloot may be expelled and sent to Peru."

And, one of his fellow countrymen doesn't think Dutch authorities will intervene on his behalf and that he will have to serve his sentence in a Peruvian jail as there is no judicial treaty between the two countries!

"In addition, odds are that Netherlands will not intervene in favor of its citizen, in opinion of Dutch law professor Geert-Jan Knoops.

“I assume that Joran is the main suspect in the Peru murder case and that the Peruvian authorities will want to prosecute him. In that case, he is an ordinary suspect. All the Netherlands can do is give him consular assistance," he told Dutch media.

If van der Sloot is convicted in Peru, he will have to serve his sentence in Peru, since there is no judicial treaty between Peru and the Netherlands that may allow him to serve his sentence in a Dutch jail.

I'm local and the AL U.S. Atty is holding a presser now.

He is being charged with extortion. Requesting $250K to reveal the location of Natalee's body.

Details forthcoming....

eta: sorry for not being able to add more info this min. all of the websites are overloaded and local news pre-empted the US Atty. presser... I *thought* he said the extortion attempt was very recent. Not sure enough to give you guys an exact date and not even positive they revealed the exact date.

Now that he's been captured, the US court in Alabama is stepping in to file extortion claims?

I hope he gets all sorts of charges thrown his way.

I'm confused, did he offer to pay $250,000 to find her body or did he ask for the money to tell the information?

He was wired 15000k as a down payment wired (to the Netherlands) on the 250k he wanted for him telling what happened and where to find her remains.

I just read the headlines, what great and bittersweet news for Beth, Dave, Tim Miller and so many that have poured so much emotion time and energy in to Natalee. Karma is what comes to mind right now.

RIP Natalee and Stephany, two beautiful young women whose life has been stripped so unnecessarily.

Off to catching up

Between this story and the one where his friend is talking about how desperately he needed money makes me think mama isn't as supporting as his dad was.

Well obviously he did not offer money to anyone for the information. He is accused of extortion which means he is accused of trying to extort money from someone in exchange for the information on where the body is.

Is it just me or is the wording very strange to anyone else?

" Joran Van der Sloot, the longtime suspect in the disappearance of missing Mountain Brook teenager Natalee Holloway, has been accused of offering $250,000 in exchange for her whereabouts".

Why the heck would Joran OFFER 250k?

I think it's just poor wording in the article. Here's a copy of the complaint. Count 1 says:

"That on or about May 10, 20l0, the defendant, Joran van der Sloot, did obstruct, delay, and affect commerce and the movement ofany article or commodity in commerce, by extortion and attempts to do so, in that, the defendant did knowingly and wilfully cause another person to wire transfer a partial payment of money ($15,000) from a financial institution in Birmingham, Alabama, to a financial institution in the Netherlands, after representing to the other person that he would provide the location of Natalee Holloway's remains in Aruba and information regarding the circumstances of her death, upon receipt of $250,000 from the other person, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1951(a)."
