It could be fraud if he didn't hold up his end of the bargain. But extortion? I don't think so.

South America... sorry.
Can you give me a definition for dummies of exactly what extortion is?

I see Joran is sporting a pair of spiffy handcuffs for this second perp walk.....
The U.S. has an extradition treaty with Peru:http://www.oas.org/juridico/MLA/en/traites/en_traites-ext-usa-per.pdf.
Whether extradition is possible, however, depends in part on the laws of Peru regarding that conduct, and of course I'm not too familiar with the laws of Peru. Also, it would have taken some time to work out the extradition, even assuming that the feds had any clue where Joran was at the time.
I'm a little confused by this Complaint. Where's the extortion/fraud? This looks like something that was filed because the feds wanted to file "something" against him but didn't have the facts they needed to really charge him with what they wanted to charge him with. I don't think they would have filed this on May 10. I think they were waiting for something more. Like the location of Natalie's body.
Who is Joran's attorney in this case and is he/she be waiting for him in Peru? Can he/will he be questioned without an attorney present?
Mr Flores is probably fighing his own demons. Its common for folks to be kidnapped in Peru, well, there she was alone in the middle of the night with money. I thought it was said earlier that they had a fight about her going back out. I can believe his conscience is tormenting him even though he was at no fault.
Kids, why don't they listen to us.

"I consider myself handsome, but women do not want to go with me," said van der Sloot Joran in Lima
<snippets>![]()
The alleged murderer of Stephany Flores arrived in Peru on 14 May. He was planning on staying for a month.
Two weeks before the crime, of which Joran van der Sloot is considered the sole suspect, he said that it was difficult for him to find a female companion during his stay in Lima.
Although it is clear Joran's priority was the poker game tournament, he also had time to visit some nightclubs in Miraflores.
"I approach the girls, engage in conversation, and I even dance salsa and merengue, but then, when I ask them to leave together, they say no," he complained that night.
Stephany Flores was also a frequent visitor to the casino. After the crime, witnesses commented that Friday, May 28 was the first time the young Dutchman talked to the young girl, although it is very likely that they have met earlier in the game room. According to witnesses, on Saturday she offered him a ride to his hotel in her Jeep. . For Stephany that was the worst bet of her life ... her last one.

Hi, Beach2yall. With all due respect to Mr. Twitty, his opinions on this case have been colored by some very strong and understandable emotions. Phone records and triangulations, several interrogations, and known movements don't indicate any Kalpoe involvement except their fragile, short-lived lie. (The taped police car conversations and Joran's own subsequent hostile statements hardly indicate that he feared any possible incriminating statements from them.) If they had been involved, they would have been nothing short of insane to expose themselves to hostile deposition questioning by Dr. Phil McGraw's million-dollar lawyers after they sued him. (We have the O.J. Simpson civil trial to substantiate that.)
I totally agree with you darnudes, though it happens it is not a common occurrence in Peru.I'm sorry but I have to make a correction, as someone who has spent a lot of time in Peru I have to say it is not common for people to be kidnapped, that is not true at all.
hmm...interesting. If she offered him a ride back to his hotel, i wonder why her car was found so far away from the hotel (that is what has been reported correct??)
ETA: if he can be placed as having to move the vehicle away from the hotel, that shoots his 'i went for coffee and came back and she was dead' defence in the foot!!
