Pilot crashes plane into his own home in Utah with wife and boy inside, police say

A pilot left his Utah home "fully engulfed" after flying a plane into it early Monday with his wife and a boy inside the residence, police said. The wife and boy escaped safely, but the pilot, 47-year-old Duane Youd, did not survive.

The crash came hours after Youd was involved in a domestic violence incident and booked into the Utah County Jail on Sunday evening, Sgt. Noemi Sandoval of the Payson Police Department told journalists on scene after the incident.
...

Sunday was the second time Youd was arrested on domestic violence charges in the past year, Sandoval said.

Sunday night's incident took place at the nearby American Fork Canyon, where Youd and his wife were drinking, Sandoval said. Witnesses told police they saw Youd assault his wife before the Utah County Sheriff's Office took him into custody.

The workmanship on that house was prestine. Wow. The plane didn't even make it through a door.

I just wished his wife waved to him while escaping pass the front yard 2 seconds before the crash. Lol.

Something like in those W E Coyote cartoons. Lol..

But seriously. Glad the mother and child escaped.

Yikes. This is like the crazy man who took his entire family, wife, kids and parents to dinner, then excused himself, went to the car, and drove it into the restaurant, killing some of them. I just don't get it.

Domestic violence to extremes.

Am I the only one that is bothered by the fact that it is 2018 and we are still seeing people arrested for domestic violence and being able to bail out within hours? smh This is exactly why so many cases go unreported. I have been there and knew that if I reported, it would only be a matter of time before I paid for it. I am glad the wife and son got out of there safely!

And allowed to keep their choice of weapon.

Dear Kaen,

I was so very glad and surprised as well to read that they survived.

Saddening how many times, during domestic violence this is not how it ends for the victims.

Truly bizarre crime.

Thankfully the targets of his anger were spared and he is no longer around.

Was amazed how accurate he was with crashing where he intended and secondly how well the house fared - although plainly the fire from the crash has caused what appears to be extensive damage.

He looks at least 10-15 years older than 47. Bitter man full of hate. At least he left this world like he wanted to.
I'm relieved that the wife and child were able to escape.

They are free from him now.

Part 2

When will judges or whoever learn that victims must be protected. A short stint in jail, restraining orders, etc do not protect victims. Those things are kind of like kicking a rabid dog. Just pisses them off more.

Exactly right. I don't profess to be able to offer a solution to how victims be protected though. Some offenders are particularly dangerous and have an almost one tracked mind. Not sure there is enough prison space to house all of them?

They don't want him remembered like this and want the world to know he was a wonderful man.

I wonder how his neighbors feel? The one who's garage he clipped? The ones who's houses could have burned? Are they quite as forgiving? Maybe they are better people than I am... which is very possible but I don't think I would be that forgiving.

Irrelevant side note. I grew up in this neighborhood. My family reunions are right up the canyon from his house. I have family a few streets over. Used to walk down to the gas station down the street to get my Aunt her Pepsi everyday. This house wasn't there at the time, I'm older than it is.

This is beyond bizarre.

Hoping the insurance company (assuming there is insurance on the home) does not penalize the wife for her half of an intentionally burned home. Trust the plane, that belonged to a company and not the deceased, will be covered.

Like others, glad the wife and her son escaped the fire. Sounds like a long road to recovery in that everyone close to the deceased thought he was a wonderful guy. He more than messed that up imo.
