Pit Bull and Other Dog Attacks.

This is terrible! My dogs play with a female mastiff all the time on playdates. She's very sweet. Since Rhames' dogs were allowed to run loose on his I'm wondering if these were guard dogs?

ETA: the KNBC article says 2 were mastiffs, and 2 other dogs.

They're just not very scary.

My neighbors had a chihuahua... every time we stepped out into the front yard, this little monster would attack our ankles! I would never abuse an animal, but this one... GRRRRRRRRRR! I was never more happy when that little monster ran away from home, never to be seen again! LOL!

Honestly, these idiots are not responsible pet owners. I have lived next to them over 20 years. I have had a total of 3 dogs (2 passed away from old age, 1 I still have)... while these idiots have had over 15 dogs! They get one, it lasts a little while, then it disappears or runs away and they get another... their favorite lately are pit bulls... they are now on their 5th pit bull... and it's a mean sob...

There are different breeds of mastiffs: English, Neopolitan, & Tibetan that I can think of right now. They are all different dogs.

The victim, who hasn't been identified, had worked at the actor's home for about two years and was responsible for caring for the dogs, said Los Angeles Police officer Sandra Gonzalez.
Four mastiffs were seized by animal services, she said.
Police got a call at 7:15 a.m. from someone reporting a dead body at the home. Gonzalez didn't know who made the call.

There is discussion about this on the pit bull thread too. Seems there are conflicting reports on how many "mastiffs" were involved:
2 mastiff & 2 other dogs
3 mastiff & 1 pit bull
4 mastiffs
Guess we'll have to wait until more information comes out.

Do "mastiffs" generally have a reputation for doing something like this (like pitbulls do)? There was probably no way to fend off 4 dogs. How sad for this caretaker.

You are so right. I immediately assumed Bull Mastiff's.

Far as I know, they are generally a gentle dog...I've only personally known an English Mastiff. There are three other breeds of mastiffs: Neoplitan, Tibetan, and Bullmastiff. I'm wondering if he had Neopolitans, they are known to be excellent guard dogs.

I am hearing the same conflicting reports about what kind of dogs all 4 may have been . But I am not hearing conflicting reports that the 2 that did the damage were both Mastiffs.

A friend of mine has an English mastiff. Acts like a pit bull as far as I'm concerned. But it seems to adore her and is very protective.

The rest of can't move a muscle in her house without the dog going into attack mode.

Police tell TMZ that the victim of the dog attack at Ving Rhames' home could have had a heart attack, since none of the wounds -- on his face and neck only -- appear to have been life threatening. They speculate that he was possibly running for his life after a confrontation with the dogs. TMZ has learned the 40-year-old caretaker lived at the house and had been an employee of the actor for two years.
