Well this is for another thread, but if bipolar I is the correct diagnosis, he could certainly have remorse.
The shrink evaluating him (the case of him molesting the 13 years old) found that he had none. If he had none in that case, why would he have remorse now?

And Dr. Carroll told the court that sex offenders who never accept responsiblity--or acknowledge their guilt--are unable to be rehabilitated. Hence he recommended that John Gardner not be released until he had served the maximum sentence for the molestation and felony charges."
