"The Pope from Chicago.

1746737266213.webp

The American from Chicago,
who for decades worked on the peripheries of the Church,
has gained a reputation as a balanced and modest pastor.

Prevost does not seek publicity,
is reserved in style and words,
and prefers a quiet, consultative model of governance.

'A bishop should not be a little prince in his own kingdom',
he himself said in an interview for the official Vatican website.
'He is called to be close to people, to walk with them, to suffer with them'.

Prevost knows the realities of the global Church.
As the General of the Augustinians,
he visited communities in Europe, Asia and South America.
He is fluent in Spanish and Italian.

According to Church observers,
the new Pope may continue some of the directions begun by Francis –
primarily in terms of pastoral style and collegiality of decisions.

His Pontificate may therefore be seen as a time of stabilization
and building understanding between different trends in Church."

i suppose we’ll just have to see what his papacy will be like!
<Snipped for focus>

I agree! And people are commenting on it from their own perspectives and biases.

"Leo XIV.

The choice of name says a lot.

1746738770637.webp

The new Pope
does not want to be just a continuation of others,
but wants to refer to the great Catholic tradition,
great Popes from different times.

The last Pope to bear this name was Leo XIII,
a man who - one could say -
created Catholic social teaching,
responded to the great challenge of not only communism,
but also godless capitalism,
with an inhuman face.

If Leo XIV chose this name,
then he is certainly aware that a response is needed to the inequalities, evil and drama
that torment the modern world.

But his name refers also to something else.

Leo the Great and Leo XIII were people
who reminded us
that the Church needs theology and philosophy,
that these - if they are good -
allow to understand the world.

Leo XIII called for the rebirth of Thomistic studies,
so maybe Leo XIV will call - as an Augustinian -
for great Augustinian studies,
for their rebirth?

Or maybe
he will start to indicate the need to seek another rooting of great Catholic thought,
to express it in new forms."

Some words from La Republica, Peru.

Peru's President:

"En nombre del Gobierno y del pueblo del Perú expresamos nuestra inmensa alegría y enviamos nuestro saludo y un abrazo fraterno a su santidad, León XIV (...) El papa es peruano, Dios ama al Perú. Viva el papa León XIV, viva el Perú", dijo."

"Alegria, Saludo y Abrazo Fraterno"

Simple words but so beautiful.

I love this message :D

Me too. The pope is Peruvian. God loves Peru. Long live Pope Leo XIV. Long live Peru.

BTW, first ever female president of Peru.

As recently as April – in a post pinned to the top of his page – Prevost amplified a tweet from Catholic commentator Rocco Palmo that was critical of Trump’s campaign to send illegal migrant criminals to the El Salvadorian mega-prison CECOT.

“Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed? How can you stay quiet?” the post read.

An historic event for two countries!

And to add to that - the pope is American. God loves the USA. Long live Pope Leo XIV. Long live the USA.

Both countries so proud and honored.

I am more than a little surprised (pleasantly) at his undergrad math degree. To my mind math is about as far from religious studies as could be. (Me: many years of parochial school).

"The world gazed at the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica for more than an hour.

The new Pope
first had to write his speech—on notebook pages,
as it turned out.

The choice of Prevost
is seen as a compromise —
and at the same time as a sign of unity in the Church,
as the quick conclusion of Conclave would indicate.

He combines American roots,
Latin American influences
and experience working in Rome.

In this way,
he became the most optimal candidate for the College of Cardinals,
which had to overcome cultural and ecclesiastical differences.

'He is a very sensitive person
and makes sure that everyone can express their opinion',
Pope Francis said of Prevost."

I think he, and many of us, were really surprised at another South American country being represented so soon. After Argentina & Francis. But this choice managed to give honor to an entire hemisphere.

"Leon means lion.

But it's a Lion fighting for Peace.

1746746682015.webp

We have a Pope of Peace
in the world on the brink of war
and in Church whose unity hangs by a thread.

When the new Pope, Leo XIV, spoke,
in his words we heard the crystal clear message of the Gospel,
which from Christ onwards has been proclaimed by the Church to this day:

'Peace to you all!'

Moved but composed and serene,
Leo XIV showed what the Church is for him:
a community that proclaims peace
to all men, wherever they may be,
peace that is
'disarmed and disarming,
humble and persevering',
coming from God who loves all unconditionally.

The word 'Peace'
dominated his first speech,
although there was also no shortage of warm words about his predecessor,
reminders of the need for synodality in the Church,
and calls to be courageous missionaries."

Pope Leo XIV was born in Chicago, so that naturally begs the question what sports team the new pontiff roots for.
(…)
According to his brother, Pope Leo XIV is loyal to the Southside. John Prevost revealed his brother is a White Sox fan in an interview with WGN TV.

“He was never, ever a Cubs fan. So I don’t know where that came from. He was always a Sox fan,” John Prevost said.

The pope's sibling added they grew up in a split household, but not with the White Sox. His mother was a Cubs fan and his father was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
