I was biking my kids to school and a wide section of the blocks we ride through was taped off. Police were not allowing access within a block of the crime scene. This area of Portland, OR is not known for violent crime, but it's not totally calm either.

The area is on 2100 block of NE 18th Avenue, Portland, OR:

"Northern District officers were called to Northeast 18th Avenue near Northeast Tillamook Street shortly after 7 a.m. after a man was found lying in a driveway and unresponsive, according to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau Monday morning."

Hope the perp turns out to be known to the victim so you don't have to worry about someone attacking random people so close to where you live.

Victim identified by LE as Morgan Seger, 49. I hope this isn't a guy I used to see in that neighborhood living out of his van. He had a solar panel array that he put on his SUV roof. Friendly, clean, and minding his own business.

KGW has a video on their site (www.kgw.com) but when I try to link to it, it goes to somewhere else, so you'll have to look it up on the site. The one curious part is that the manner of discovery of the body; Yvette, who works there says she found him when she came to work, but the Oregonian story states the pastor and his wife found him. Maybe she told them and they went to confirm. Don't know. LE has little to comment at the moment.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Police have released the identity of a man found stabbed to death Monday morning in a driveway in the Irvington neighborhood of Northeast Portland. The Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed that Morgan Seger, 49, died by stab wound, according to a Thursday news release from the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). His family has been notified of his death.

Neighbors have some further info in a story from Oregonian (see below).
excerpts below, byline here:
The man lived in a station wagon parked on the street for a few years, said John Schwiebert, pastor of the Metonia Peace Community United Methodist Church.
Schwiebert said he and his wife rushed out of the church residence about 7 a.m. and realized the man was dead.
“My wife is a nurse. She recognized that the body was cold,” Schwiebert said. “We were assuming that he was in a fight because his shirt was rolled up, his stomach was exposed, there was blood.”
Tucked on the leafy residential corner, the church normally known as Peace House has long offered showers, food and clothing to homeless people, including the man who was killed, Schwiebert noted.
He described the man as friendly. He declined to identify the man by name.
The man was lying a few feet away from his car at the foot of the church driveway at Northeast 18th Avenue and Tillamook Street. By noon, staff with the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office had arrived on the scene, while a crime scene photographer snapped photos.
