Missing Scots tourist Greg Monks found dead in Portugal after week-long search

A Scots tourist who vanished on a stag do in Portugal has reportedly been found dead.

The body of Greg Monks was found at the bottom of a ravine “a long way from the spot where he was last seen" in the Algarve.

Portuguese newspaper daily Correio da Manha is reporting Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria force is at the scene.

"Policia Judiciaria force is at the scene.

It is understood
fire fighters have removed the body from the area
and taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

The Policia Judiciaria officially confirmed
that his body was found on 'steep wasteland'
following a search of his presumed route.

The police force said in a statement:

'The PJ has located the body of the missing Scottish tourist in Albufeira'."

O no, so sad, RIP Gregg & I Hope a full timeline of your movements how you ended up in a ravine can be established,

The BBC article says something a bit different about where he was found.

The Polícia Judiciária said the body, which is yet to be formally identified, was found on a "vacant and very uneven lot".

Sister Jillian Monks, 36,
who carried out a mass social media campaign to find Greg
today told of her family's devastation,
as she paid tribute to her brother.

'We are truly heartbroken.
Everyone who knows Greg
knows how much he will be missed
and what an amazing guy he was'."

CCTV footage showed the 38-year-old jumping over a wall, allowing police to narrow down his last movements and make the grim find in the Algarve ravine.

The police insider said today: 'The investigation into exactly how he died is ongoing.

'But all the evidence so far is pointing to the tourist losing all notion of where he was in a place he hadn't been to before, and under the effects of alcohol jumping over a first wall into a private property and then a second wall in the back garden not realising there was a steep drop the other side.'

Another police insider added: 'The GNR police force had requested help from the Polícia Judiciaria force which confirmed yesterday the missing man's body had been found.

'They then got given CCTV from one of the villas in the Cerro da Aguia areas which enabled them to trace him jumping over a wall of a neighbouring property.
