Mexico earthquake death toll surpasses 200

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/09/20/mexico-earthquake-death-toll-surpasses-200.html

"Desperate searchers shouted "quiet" and listened for faint voices in the rubble where a Mexican school once stood, as rescuers used trained dogs and their bare hands to reach any survivors of Tuesday's magnitude-7.1 earthquake that killed at least 217 people."

"
The deadly earthquake struck on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 earthquake that killed thousands of people. Residents in Mexico had conducted earthquake drills just hours earlier.

The earthquake occurred just two weeks after a magnitude 8.1 tremor in the south of the country killed more than 90 people and caused buildings in Mexico City to sway for more than a minute. President Enrique Pena Nieto called that earthquake the biggest quake the country has seen in a century."

Mexico earthquake: Children killed at collapsed primary school

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-41337467

At least 21 children and five adults died at a primary school which collapsed in Mexico City during Tuesday's quake, the government says.

The shallow, 7.1 magnitude quake killed at least 225 people in total and caused major damage across states in the centre of the country.

Desperate searches for survivors under the rubble are continuing.
Dozens of buildings collapsed, including several churches where worshippers were killed.

Unable to form words to express how I feel with all these incredibly devastating events, so many one-after-another, or occurring on same days. Just unbelievable to watch for a distance.... I cannot imagine being there to go through this.

A 7.1 is a massive earthquake. The Sylmar Quake AZ referred to was a 6.1. The one in Mexico is 100x worse. I pray for these people. This is terrifying.

Northridge was in 94. Was a 6.7. (I learned far more about earthquakes than I ever thought I would, trust me - ACK!!!) Sylmar is up north and was in 1971. Also a 6.6 I think. Regardless, anything like this is bad bad bad when it is so densely populated, obviously. And the fact that the multiplier for each decimal point is so HUGE is still mind-blowing to me.

So much suffering everywhere right now... I hope people find the good in each other right now and help in whatever way we're able. hugs.

Are Mexico's two September earthquakes connected?

http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-41332013

"Mexico had barely begun to deal with the aftermath of one big quake before another rocked the country. People will naturally ask: are they related? Did one cause the other?

Seismologists will spend a good deal of time in the coming months debating this issue, but on the face of it they look to be unconnected."

Unfortunately this could herald an eruption by Popocatapetl, which is only 50km or so away. It lies almost equidistant between Mexico City (8.5m) and Puebla (2.2m).

I remember being in Puebla when Popo was active and putting out ash. It was crazy how everything was covered in a layer of it and all of the swimming pools were closed and covered during the summer.

And Lilibet, yes! It's so scary knowing that it's inevitable but there's nothing we can really do outside of basic preparedness. Eek.

How sad! :(

Been feeling depressed since Sunday (yes, even after our power went back on) there is just so much tragedy out there I have no words.

Prayers for Mexico.

Don't know what to say to help anyone feel better right now other than please be kind and gentle to yourself. Take care of yourself for now and hopefully, things will start to feel better, more hopeful, in the coming days... So much of what is going on is out of anyone's control, all we have is each other and hope. Hope never hurts. We have to move forward. The alternative is unacceptable. Hang in there, silly as that sounds. Reach out if you need to, and may you always find a soft hand when you do.

ETA; or maybe a rough, calloused hand will work in a pinch too!!!

While the scene is grim, every rescue provides hope. Walking around the dusty perimeter of what used to be the schoolhouse, a man notices something behind a hole in an outer wall.

“Here are children!” he shouts. “Ayuden!”

Help!

From the hole, several children are pulled sobbing, but apparently not seriously injured.

Oh sweet Mary, listen to AzGirl. I can't add anything better than what she already shared. You have been through much trauma and stress, and all the added disasters just keep piling onto that. you must put yourself first or you will not be much help to anyone. Bless every day you have and find one good thing you can say about that. Do something kind for another ( even if it's a prayer from your heart, a kind thought, a hand extended). And we are here if you need/want a place to let it out. :grouphug:

So glad that despite earthquakes elsewhere (Fukushima, Bali, New Zealand) that Mexico City escape a huge aftershock this time.
So glad they are still rescuing people. That could happen for a week!

Rescue workers still scrambling to find trapped school children in Mexico City

http://abcnews.go.com/International...ble-collapsed-school-mexico/story?id=49979768

Overnight, as sheets of rain poured down on the capital city, first responders continued an hours-long effort to rescue a student named Frida Sofia, Mexico's education minister told Televisa.

Rescuers managed to contact Sofia and give her water and oxygen, the education minister said. She is trapped under a granite table or desk, which rescuers believe is giving her some protection from the school's collapsed concrete slabs.

Sofia informed workers that there are two people trapped with her. Sofia said she can feel the others but doesn't know whether they are alive.
