Dare I ask? What is the financial source for "security" for the royal family and functions such as these? It must be astronomical.

The tax payer.

I don't think so. They and their father don't receive the income or allowance the other Royals receive. They have to work at jobs in the private sector for most of their income, IIRC. I don't feel comfortable criticizing their fashion choices.

Along those lines, Harry doesn't have a large regular income either. He has money he inherited from his mom and other royal perks, but he will have to watch his spending as William and Kate do. I admire them for not being showy big spenders on clothing, etc. They try to consider public opinion in their choices. Harry and Meghan will probably have to start doing the same. Meghan should watch her tendency to splurge on high priced designer couture. Maybe she can find some way to generate outside income, as Fergie has.

William and Harry inherited £24 million from Princess Diana in 1997 which has been invested wisely. Prince Charles gives them and their spouses an allowance worth several million a year from the Duchy of Cornwall estate which is worth £400 million and generates many a million a year in income. Her Majesty the Queen who is privately worth £415 million is said to have paid for the wedding excluding security which is paid for by the tax payer as a wedding gift. So Meghan will not be shopping in Poundland for her toiletries and household goods or buying clothes in Primark.

IIRC: Security, by far the greatest expense, estimated at 30 million.

That’s not strictly true her Majesty the Queen privately owns the Duchy of Lancaster Estate which is worth £400 million and provides £20 million a year in income. The Sovereign Grant also provides the Queen and the Royal Family with income in 2017 it was £42 million. Depending on whether you are a Royalist or not I think the money they cost the tax payer is worth it when you think about how much tourism they generate alone.

It’s a lot of money but worth it to keep the family and public safe yesterday. If something terrible had happened it would not only be a terrible tragedy but it would also stop the millions of people watching around the globe from coming to the U.K which would affect the economy.

If there was a referendum done tomorrow on keeping the monarchy I think the majority would choose to keep it.

Of course she wont. But she is probably aware of public opinion when she attends events with Kate and the news media points out she's wearing a $1700 dress while Kate is wearing one that costs less than $200. I admire Kate and Wills for working to not flaunt wealth in public. I think they have a real connection with regular working folks in England who pay taxes and struggle to make ends meet.

We will need to wait and see there was a bit of a backlash when Meghan wore her £56,000 engagement picture dress. Yesterday her wedding dress was £200,000 and she was also wearing a new £100,000 Cartier bracelet. I am not criticising at all it is their money to spend as they please, but some members of the public struggling to get by might be annoyed at their excessive spending in the future.

I was referring specifically to the security costs for the wedding, which were paid by the tax payer.

The security costs of staging any event in our world is huge.
An estimated 100 thousand peeps lined the streets in Windsor alone. --6,000 press people broadcasting to a billion or so. Just an Olympic size undertaking and it was seemless.

The magic of the British Monarchy is just that, magical. The joy they brought to a weary world yesterday is priceless. And it's the last major royal wedding we'll see for a couple of decades. The monarchy, with all its ancient tradition, with all its pagentry, made me long for a constancy for my country. Like an anchor, like something to hold onto, like fairy tales are for everyone and this is how you do it. --Like England and America have a very special relationship without the politics. That's a joyous thing to remember.

Harry and Meghan were smart in choosing a Saturday instead of the weekday protocol. England was party central. I think it will definitely be a boost for tourism, too.

I assume they may borrow outfits for these events

Here is some additional info. While their incomes seem large, it has to cover the expense of their household staff, etc. which can be expensive.

The above article notes that the income for Harry & Wills clothing and travel expenses come from an allowance from Prince Charles income from the Duchy of Cornwall. So Charles controls those expenditures.

ETA: As I recall, Harry did not make Meghan sign a prenup.

I'm glad Charles helps takes care of his kids expenses; he surely can afford it; but if Andrew needed help; the Queen should fund him too. It's absurd having $88 billion but not sharing the wealth with your own kids. You should take care of your own. According to Greg, Andrew doesn't need it, I guess he helps his girls out as he should if he can afford to. If he couldn't, they should be given royal jobs by the Queen. These are her grand daughters.

What does Fergie do?

Not only that but the amount of people that traveled from the US and other countries just to hopefully see something had to be a lot. I can't imagine how much money it generated for local businesses

Celebrities borrow stuff all the time in the US; I do wonder if the engagement dress and bracelet were borrowed. As for her wedding gown, I personally didn't think it was worth $200,000.

Wow I’m surprised how casually dressed some members of the public are considering they were going to be photographed and watched by millions.

Off topic:

Thank you to all of you for making this such an enjoyable thread and for taking my mind off things. I’m going into hospital for awful tests this week as I am still suffering from internal bleeding but they don’t know where from. I’m in for a miserable week in hospital but I look forward to being back with all of you when Websleuths has moved.

Fergie has been in a lot of debt and has even sold goods on QVC. She lives with Prince Andrew and I would imagine he helps her out. Apparently they want to remarry but this can’t happen with Prince Philip still with us as he despises her.

I think the new Cartier bracelet may have been a gift from Harry to wear on her wedding day. The Royals normally loan jewellery from the Queen and the collection owned by the country. They don’t normally loan jewellery from brands like celebrities do as they are quite strict about that kind of thing.
