Private Investigator?

Is anyone on here a private investigator? I'm interested in pursuing this as a side job.
Can you tell me about training/licensing? Everything I've read online is confusing. As I understand it you can fulfill your licensing requirements in three ways: coursework through an agency, apprenticeship with a licensed PI or with a background in law enforcement.

Is that true? How hard is it to get an apprenticeship?

From what I gather, it varies from state to state. In PA it is quite an ordeal and why I may only try and get certified once I have retired from my "day job".
